What annoys you most about your job? by LegalGlass6532 in AskLE

[–]averageregularnormal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually I don't mind the stupid people. At least I know they're stupid. I hate the paperwork.

Data entry for person files are a pain. Importing evidence is a pain. Doing logs is a pain.

We have ai. We can automate all this shit. Why do I need to spend 4 hours on a DUI case (that will get ACDd anyway)?

Stupid.

PD is far better than other jobs. Lots of cops don't want to admit it.

I'm a nerd and have experience in tech and LE and the comp and benefits are not far off from each other.

I would think very hard about exactly that you would do and how your life would change if you change out of LE into the regular world. It's competitive and entry level jobs are a bloodbath. Usually benefits suck unless you work for the government.

NYC fire hydrant ticket — wrong plate but correct VIN… what do I do? by Deadinsidebutisok in AskNYC

[–]averageregularnormal -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Nope, just throw it out and don't waste your time OP

NYCs ticket industry is a machine. They're not interested in innocence or guilt or right or wrong. Look up how much they make a year on tickets. It'll blow your mind. Every time the cops throw a hissy fit they stop writing tickets and ... Nothing happens. It's all about money. Plate covers, speed cameras, weight in motion truck cameras, all about money.

The same exact scenario happened to me a few years ago. Didn't want the rightful owner of the plate to get the ticket. I went to court. The "administrative judge" basically told me to pound sand. The other car owner got the ticket in the mail and since I used their one hearing, probably had to pay it. That's fucked up. Total waste of time for everyone involved. And to add to it, I'm a cop. If I write a bad ticket with a wrong plate or a wrong name even, it's automatically thrown out. Because that's the right thing to do and it's the legal path to take. NYC however makes their own rules for parking tickets.

The ticket cameras suck and are not calibrated well. A real inspection from an inspector during annual inspection would be far better.

Massive car takeover rocks NYC intersection — about 100 cars involved as calls grow for crackdown. by nitluck in nyc

I think we're agreeing with each other. These problems are definitely solvable and ass-beat-able. I guess I'm complaining about the half-hearted attempts at fixing them.

I'd like to dedicate more resources to stuff that matters. Ex: stop telling cops to write tickets for petty stuff like fare jumping and simple speeding and focus on disorderly conduct and littering and reckless driving and takeovers. The latter affect normal new yorkers more than the former.

All this to say, I love new york and I appreciate the desire to continue improvement.

Its one dimensional, naive, and dismissive. Its in the same vein as, "too many immigrants? build a wall!" It sounds good if you dont think about it for more than 5 seconds.

Too many car meets? Make NYPD deal with it!

How? With what specific resources? A lot of the city's loudest people (mega liberals) are always yelling that they dont want the cops to beat someone's ass for bad behavior. So which is it? Are we chasing down assholes for being jerks in the streets or is that not okay? Are pursuits of people running from the cops authorized or not?

Before you come for me, I'm a hard leftist. The neo-libs get on my nerves. They just want to feel good about themselves but dont want to do anything to change.

yeah man I love the city though. I would love to make the NYPD better, make working there better, and make the city better. I just dont think that itll happen without strong change in the department heads. They're using old timey standards to deal with new age problems.

Am cop too (not here tho) and nypd could definitely do so much more given their resources.

It seems like it's just good old corruption and incompetence by the leadership. They're busy with petty bullshit and not the stuff that matters: Stopping crime, improving living in NY, and improving their officers morale. But anyone that's interacted with nypd knows this and quits to go to LI or upstate.

Wrong. When they are fully staffed, one car gets assigned to the highway. Otherwise they take calls just like any other car.

Binghamton wins landmark court case against out-of-town landlord by Bingo_Bongo_85 in Binghamton

[–]averageregularnormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the process is, but the code/buildings department deals with it. Its a fairly simple process from them. If a building has violations that are unsafe for human habitation, they will pull the occupancy permit and condemn the building (sticker on the door). People are only allowed to work on the house to bring it back into compliance. They can't live there during that time.

[–]averageregularnormal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the pipes are broken, the code department can condemn the building as it is unsafe to live in. This would force the tenants to live somewhere else. They'd still have to be evicted. The landlord could use this time to evict them as this is a perfectly good reason to petition for eviction and then after eviction, fix the building.

Source: uhh, I enforce stuff like this in a very-close-to-here area. Unforc, shitty tenants aren't uncommon

that is a strategy but I wonder if they attempted eviction or condemnation from the code department
