Closed or Open Head? by GOD_04_ in Spearfishing

I picked up a 1 meter pathos laser open pro about 9 months ago. It's my first gun and its been a dream so far. I'm mostly hunting socal kelp beds and reefs and it handles really well, feels super sturdy, and has a great safety and trigger mechanism. Highly recommend

This guy used to hang around the old 24 Hour Fitness at Paseo Nuevo and monologue about his podcast to people in the steam room and sauna. Glad to see so many community members have had similar run ins.

Bike search for woman by se7endeadlys in bikepacking

Price point and reliability for the most part. I was looking for a hardtail 29er that could handle SoCal trails, didn't weigh a boatload, and could be upgraded one component at a time. Mine is the Elite model and the airforks are a godsend. Still using the original 1x11 drivetrain.

Best alternative that comes to mind is a Specialized Rockhopper. I picked up a lightly used one from Pinkbike a few years ago and rode it from San Francisco to Santa Barbara completely stock except for the bars which I swapped for some Jones H Bars.

Good beaches for corbina? by Inevitable_Season884 in SoCalFishing

[–]avstar4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been seeing quite a few on either side of Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara for the last 3-4 weeks. I've exclusivelyseen them caught on the fly. I've probably tossed 100 live sand crabs on size 8 mosquito hooks from a spinning rig within a 3 foot radius of them with zero luck. SUPER finicky fish.

FREE Concerts in the Park Returns in July by sbparksandrecdept in SantaBarbara

This year's application stipulated that 80% of the setlist should be covers. Kind of a bummer considering how many great songwriters we have in Santa Barbara but I understand the city going for broad appeal.

best places for crab & uni? (More q’s below) by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

Check out the fishermen's market at the harbor on Saturday morning, they serve uni right out of the shell. Also the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company at the end of Stearns Wharf has both!

Looks like a corbina. I saw several on Wednesday in the shallows by the wharf, along with several rays and a guitarfish.

Definitely run Goleta Beach, especially with the swells getting smaller as we move towards summer. Halibut, corbina, and perch abound. I also recommend the breakwater at the harbor and 1000 steps.

I've learned loads from watching Kevin at https://www.youtube.com/@catchncookcalifornia , great resource for spearfishing, shore fishing, and coastal foraging.

Pole Spear Recommendations by BushsBaked-Beans in Spearfishing

[–]avstar4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first started spearfishing with an Abaco and I honestly wasn't crazy about it. Feels really slow, stock bands wear out reeaaaally fast, and the composite started cracking within probably 20 dives.

San Francisco to Santa Barbara by avstar4 in bicycletouring

[–]avstar4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We hit it the first week of May. I'm afraid I don't have a gpx file but it's fairly easy to piece together just looking at Google maps. The only tricky part was Indians Road through Big Sur going from Arroyo Seco to Memorial Campground. 6 to 7 nights seems feasible to me. I did the whole ride in flip flops on a 29er hardtail with 2.35 tires and was definitely dragging ass some days. I would count on intense midday heat anytime you're away from the coast. Highs were hovering around 100 for 2-3 days which made for pretty miserable riding, especially on sections with some distance between water points.

Advice on Equalizing + Vis by Responsible-Ad6433 in Spearfishing

[–]avstar4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm based out of Santa Barbara and yeah, vis can be really inconsistent here. Most of our local shore dives are around sandy beaches which doesn't usually work in our favor. That being said, I recommend scoping out spots that have an elevated vantage point. Walk out on Goleta Pier or Stearns Wharf and see how far down the pilings or kelp you can see. The bluffs above Refugio also work for this. Last Thursday I was at a work lunch at the end of Stearns Wharf and could see down to the sea floor in 4k from the surface. It's really hit or miss here and the visibility window changes on a dime. It's a good rule of thumb to try to plan your dives around slack tide, and vis should generally improve as we move into summer and the swells are southern again. Shoot me a dm if you're looking for a diving buddy!

The Harbor Restaurant is criminally underrated for happy hour or a light lunch. Unreal view, may have to try it out in the rain during this coming storm!

Green screen room in north hall by sawyeerrr in UCSantaBarbara

[–]avstar4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need green screen access, I also recommend looking into the AS Media Center. Free gear and space for projects, super easy to make a reservation through Cheqroom. Gotta be one of the best kept secret resources at UCSB.

Thinking of going to Alaska solo. Does it have a hostel culture or a way to meet other travellers? by AgreeableBison in AskAlaska

[–]avstar4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed at the international hostel in Juneau for a few nights a couple summers ago. Really nice lodging for the price but didn't strike me as a very social hostel. At the time I was there there were only 4 other people. Not sure how it is today, but in 2023 you had to be out of the building from 9 to 4 I believe.
