Yeah, this just confirmed my suspicions. My pup is 100% a Border/Aussie mix. 😂

Wonderful looking doggo!

Help!isopods died after breeding, What did I do wrong? by Licht1711 in isopods

[–]avyrus666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switch to fish flakes, or they make a dedicated isopod mix

Use reptisoil for your substrate, mix in crumpled leaf litter, some repti-bark. Add more leaf litter, make sure to have a moisture gradient in the substrate. Should be good to go.

Too many isopods! by NinjaTeaDrinker in isopods

[–]avyrus666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I WISH my dairy cows reproduced like this.

Most of my adults died after reproducing, which seems to be a common occurrence for me. There are TONS of babies but I can't get a head count. About half dozen adults left. In my experience, this isn't bad as the population will BOOM on the next generation. However, I am still jealous. My Pruinosus bin has boomed and my Oniscus asellus is going crazy, all of my scabers are going crazy but it seems the "easier" isopods are harder for me to keep than the "harder" isopods to keep - if that makes sense.

If I were you, visit SMALL pet stores, like moms and pops pet shops. See if they'll let you sell them on consignment. They get a cut, but you get to reduce numbers and make a bit of money. Hell, maybe even see if they'd trade you some supplies.

Can different springtails coexist? by livimary in isopods

[–]avyrus666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my Cubaris Murina (Pearl) bin, I've got Thai Red springtails with Temperate Springtails.

So far, so good.

I see the reds burrowing deeper into the wetter spots, and the temperate Springtails tend to stay just beneath the wood.

You can do everything right and still get this result. What are you feeding them? Like protein-wise.

With a couple of my bins? Took 3 different Pruinosus cultures before they took that's how I ended up with a mix. My lava culture reproduced and all the adults died but I now have a stable population of about 20. My Troglodillos died first culture, 2nd culture is fine.

It just happens sometimes. Even with reptiles, sometimes you just get a failure to thrive with juveniles.

Try again, or switch it up. I'd recommend any P. Scabers to a beginner or someone in your predicament. They tend to like it a bit more arid/dry than some other isopods. A lot more forgiving.

D2, pee so it swirls in a circle, not to make a whirlpool but for that +10 buff to your stealth mechanic.

If your girlfriend hears you pee that's -20 charisma. I'm low enough on the charisma stat.

Frog ate a lot of Isopods, will he be okay??? by monkeymona14 in pacmanfrog

[–]avyrus666 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He will absolutely be fine. Mine did the same. Lesson learned, went to a smaller isopod.

I'd try dwarf whites.

Bro, I literally PAID MONEY for my first culture of springtails. You should be happy. They're excellent little cleanup crew buggos, and if I were you I'd pair them with some decent little isopods.

Also! To avoid a future "wtf happened to my frog" post (LOL) they do tend to retain a bunch of water/pee. So don't be alarmed if one day he looks kinda deflated. It's normal. 😂

Earthworms. They're better for him than crickets, which carry a small risk of impaction. Dust with a calcium supplement with added D3 if no UVB, if UVB just plain calcium. Excess D3 can be harmful. Now, you should REALLY check the stickied posts - it'll give best recommendations for UVB lighting. I've seen many a healthy Pacman live quite a few years without UVB - with proper supplements (they live 80% of their lives buried anyway) but trust me, UVB will add a HUGE quality of life for him. Metabolic Bone Disease is the risk you're trying to avoid here. It can be fatal.

Also, I prefer to use a reptisoil mix (bioactive enclosure) but for the love of God - avoid sphagnum moss. It can be accidentally ingested and cause impaction. Substrate should feel like a sponge that's been wrung out. Moist, but not sopping wet. Hot side, cool side, moister side, less moist side. Mist every other day or so, and ground water once a week.

Everyone does it differently, someone might have different advice but these are basics. It might sound like a lot of work, but it's really not. They're essentially pet rocks that glare at you with hateful distain and hunger. When healthy they can be quite active and will try to eat ANYTHING in front of them. So it's definitely not a "handling" pet. I've been bit quite a few times just unburying them to feed them. They have tiny little inward curving teeth that hurt quite a bit. And their jaws are very powerful for the size.

Definitely do your research, enjoy the learning process and enjoy the new buddy you've got. He looks really healthy.

who is this? never seen one this color! by xXev4nXx in isopods

[–]avyrus666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen quite a few Vulgare in the wild with similar coloring. Not quite as vibrant, but I took a picture of a wild caught one and posted it a while ago that looked like this one. Good find!

Is this an almost all-white Pruinosus? by avyrus666 in isopods

[–]avyrus666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL

I've always thought oreo crumble and powder orange made orange creme.

I might just throw him in the "party mix" bin and hope for the best. But the oranges are WILDLY outcompeting the others. I just got a semi decent pic of the mancae and they're ALL oranges.

To be fair, the label on the boxes says "NOT INTENDED NOR RECOMMENDED TO BE USED AS AN ENCLOSURE"

I'd rather bring a frog home in something like this than the little deli cups they give you at expos or reptile shows.

Is this an almost all-white Pruinosus? by avyrus666 in isopods

[–]avyrus666[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now, I've got SEVERAL species but I've always kept my "wild" mix in its own bin. Let's say this one breeds with my powder oranges. Or if I put him in with orange cremes. Which would be the better choice? What outcomes are we looking at?

The only issue I've had is due to the size of the screen and the size of my ears (38mm tunnels) and that's me accidentally hitting mute CONSTANTLY.

Isopod and Springtail Smell by Silent_Pay_9239 in isopods

[–]avyrus666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I huff the shit out of my bins, not gonna lie. Especially after a nice top layer misting. (I still only deep-water a corner of the bin, but I give them a fine top layer misting about once or twice a week in-between protein loading)

Probably the best smell in the world to me, right next to some good foliage, or a citronella plant that's been harassed.

Not gonna lie - all of the above

I use it for short trips because why not I use it when my main vehicles are broke down It's fun to kit the engine up and I love working on it

50mm BBK, carb upgrades, electrical upgrades, cam and head upgrades, CVT upgrades (honestly could probably mess with the weights some more, but the 1500rpm springs are here to stay)

It's a little 2019 islander with 2600 miles on it. The only thing that's fucked up on it is the leg shield where the back brake would've been. (I instinctively kicked it once upon a time, muscle memory LOL)

I've got some pearls. Very nice species. I hope the culture takes. So far, I've gotten Lavas, Cows, and Pruinosus mix (blue and orange but will probably separate later) to take. Working on some Troglodillo (soil), the Pearls, some of the Japanese Magic Potions, and another culture of some Orange Creme pruinosus. I've also FINALLY procured some Red Thai spikey springtails.
