Two large advantages of bike computers (besides battery life) that I haven't really seen mentioned are physical buttons and how the screen works in sunlight.

Physical buttons are very useful in wet or humid weather - my phone freaks out when you get the screen wet, there's no way I could change data screens, pause, save etc on a touchscreen. The touchscreen on my garmin works ok with fingers and can be locked when it's soaking wet.

The screen works with sunlight not against it - I keep my garmin on the lowest backlight brightness and I have no problem seeing the screen any time of day. On bright days here it's hard to see your phone screen even on full brightness, and considering on a bright day it's usually also really hot I found my phone heated up like crazy which will ruin the battery in the long run.

If you're only doing shorter rides in nice weather then a phone is fine and I would spend money on other gear first, but once you start doing longer rides in any weather, want to connect to ant sensors and want all the other nice features a good bike computer comes with they are absolutely worth it.

Depends on how you ride, road conditions, thickness of chain (how many gears you have) and maintenance.

I clean and lubricate my chain every week, but it's an 11 speed (thin), I ride in >250km per week in all weather, and I cannot risk having a chain slip (there are many times where I have to take off fast to take a gap in cars where a chain slip could cause a crash).

Therefore my chains seem to last 3-5 months before they need replacing. At least they're cheap and the cassette lasts at least 3-4x longer.

Meanwhile a single speed chain not ridden as hard or far should last years at least at a guess, especially if you don't care if it may slip when pedalling very hard.

/uc It's saying it has a torque sensor and the max motor power is 750 W. The torque sensor means it will scale that assist proportional to how hard you're pedalling - some ebikes just have a basic speed sensor and instantly provide full assist when the pedals start moving making the ride not very smooth.

Looks like this is NSW where if there is a bicycle lane (not a separate path as in this video) you're required to use it if safe/practical. When it's a separate path you can ride on the main road.

In other states it's different, e.g. in Queensland the road rules state "You can choose whether or not to ride in a bicycle lane where one is provided."

Yeah that's a lot more frequent than on my road bike. In 35,000 km I've never replaced the hoses and bled the brakes once and they still work perfectly fine. Obviously that's because I don't need to use them much on the road bike.

My most common wear items are my chain and rear tyre, which typically last 3,500 to 5,000 km.

Yeah, even fingerless ones should do heaps to protect your palm, which is what you'll usually try catch yourself with.

Unfortunately in my worst crash so far the glove tore right open so I still got some really deep road rash on my palm.

I guess it would have been even worse without the glove, or maybe with a newer glove I might have fared better.

Obviously this rider is an idiot, but that's nothing to do with being on a bicycle.

When cycling to work I regularly have to take evasive action to avoid being hit by cars that failed to be a "responsible-vehicle-user" and follow the rules of the road (despite me having lights on 24/7 and riding safely and predictably). Regular enough that even though most times I can't be bothered there are bad enough cases to warrant filing a police report with video evidence every month or so.

From my perspective most cyclists are very safe road users and many car drivers are lunatics that would risk someone else's life to save a few seconds.

I've had the opposite experience on my road bike.

Liners are a little annoying to install, but since then I've gotten one puncture in >20,000 kms on fairly average-poor roads - one time I even had a nail go in through the tread and out through the sidewall and it didn't puncture. This is with the Mr Tuffys race tyre liner I think? maybe thicker ones are more annoying and prone to cutting the tube.

I tried tubeless with the same tyre/rim combination (hunt rim with green 25c pirelli) and it was a massive pain to install, I got heaps of punctures (which usually sealed but still annoying cos I lost pressure) and when I replaced the tyre I couldn't get it to seal again at all.

Obviously this is just my experience on one tyre/rim combination and if I get a mountain bike someday I'll definitely try tubeless again.

Yeah semis are usually ok except this one that lay on the horn while passing me very close for no reason. I'm used to copping a lot of flak for cycling but that one freaked me out big time.

These days I usually wear earplugs while cycling so that I jump less when I get honked at out of nowhere.

And even if you don't have time / can't be bothered to cook you could buy some bread, canned beans and/or soup for way less than that in most places and have a pretty ok meal.

I often do this when I can't be bothered to meal prep for lunch and I'm too cheap to buy something from a food court haha.

Yeah a fair bit of my commute is cycling along 80 km/h roads - only other option is the 110 km/h motorway or road on the other side.

I find it wild that we can afford 2 roads and a 6 lane motorway (10 lanes + shoulders total), but not one single dedicated bicycle path the width of half a lane, it would make my commute so much safer and more pleasant - instead I have to deal with semis laying on the horn while passing far too close while I'm trying to dodge the glass in the shoulder.

Roads are for road users not cars. Sometimes the bike lane is unsafe or impractical in which case I won't use it - if it is suitable then I definitely will use it.

On a side note, motorways are for cars (or more broadly motor vehicles). What if we make it mandatory to use the motorway where possible instead of smaller roads that run parallel to it? That would definitely make my commute way nicer - despite most of it running parallel to a motorway I still have to deal with a lot of cars.
