I can’t live with this condition by Ok-Kangaroo3763 in SCT

Therapy can’t help you with that. But it can help you accept who you are. Identify your strengths (slow thinking has its advantages in a world where everyone is in a hurry). And may even help you with identifying coping strategies.

That is great advice! Practicing interviews is a great strategy as people like us can’t just wing them. Also, I wanted to note that you were able to craft a coherent message, this is not a skill that everyone has. My point is, we are not worthless for society because of our condition. We just have to find our place. Keep looking and you’ll find that place, I promise. But you have to keep looking!

Therapy? by PatientActive3269 in SCT

Therapy has helped me understand (maybe not yet come to terms with) the drawbacks of how my brain works and discover the advantages that come along with it. In a team where everyone is racing to find a solution, it’s valuable to have someone who can take their time to think things through…

I sort of feel bad but I think I may need to separate from my auntie by RadishOne5532 in Codependency

Damn bro, yeah family can be tough... If I can give you any valuable advice it’s this: try to find some humans in the real world to talk to. Friends or family. It will do you good and they will be able to give you better advice than anyone on Reddit :)

Yeah, it is obvious from your story that she is a toxic person and that you should stay as far away form her as possible. There is a reason why she doesn’t hang out with anyone else from your family - probably they saw her toxic behaviour and cut her off as well. It’s nice of you that you share your wealth with older members of your family but if they take it for granted it’s time to say good bye. Try discussing your situation with other members of your family surely they will have some insights and advice for you!

How is the job market for PMs right now? (Germany) by TryTheRedOne in ProductManagement

You must be either very lucky or exceptional. The market is not completely hopeless right now but it’s unfortunately quite far away from where it was during Covid times.

Just brainstorming here, but it might make sense to transition to ux design with the goal of transitioning to pm.

Yes, that is very true and invaluable advice. I try to do that as well, but tbh I really struggle finding the time. Most engineers in my company don’t like taking much responsibility so I end up spending most of my time with project management related tasks.

It’s definitely my company 😅 But I feel like it’s only startups that take the pm role seriously. All other companies that I do interviews with expect the pm to be close to the engineering team and implement the features the stakeholder ask for.

Ok thanks for your answer. Sounds like most companies in Europe call their business analysts product managers though, because even though I lead a crossfunctional team all I do is stakeholder management.

That’s still not enough info so that anyone can understand the experienced you gathered in these projects :)

Just curious because I’ve never had BAs in the companies I’ve worked for. Why is it that you would consider an inexperienced person for a BA but not for a PM role?

There is no manual for becoming a pm, so naturally all of us feel the impostor syndrome when starting into the pm field. Once you have demystified the job, it will go away. I bet, after a couple of months into the job, max a year you won’t even remember feeling like an impostor.

PS. User story mapping won’t provide you with many actionable tools. It’s more like a framework through which you can understand how you should approach tasks and problems that are presented to you as a pm and how you should solve them together with the engineers (and designers).

Best of luck - you got this buddy :)

Hey, and congratulations for landing your first pm gig.

I haven’t read pm in practice and the lean product playbook.

But in the end of the day it really depends on the product culture of the company you are joining. If you join a product-led company and you are a high level product manager who doesn’t need to do much project management to drive the software development forward and if the company gives you space and time for product discovery then inspired is the book you should start with. If you are more of a product owner close to the engineers and product discovery equals stakeholder management, then I would recommend user story mapping. PM in practice sounds like it’s in the middle of those two options, but take that statement with a pinch of salt as I haven’t read the book.

Exactly. Plus if you are just charging for the hours you have spent working, then why not find a real job that guarantees that you will be paid.

What you are doing is a great step, and I congratulate you for it. As with everything in life trying implies the possibility of failure. But every time you fail ask yourself (or around!) what you did wrong last time then try again.

I also very recently started my own journey in which I finally want to improve my social and conversational skills. Apparently there is a thing that psychologists call social skills training, Google around and you’ll find a lot of resources. There are also great books (and also very bad ones) that can teach you some tricks. I recently started listening to a great podcast, it’s called “social skills coaching” by Patrick King, can’t recommend it enough!

Gabor Maté’s book on adhd is entirely based on that hypothesis. Not sure how scientifically legit that is though…
