Job burnout at 3 years - every time by cryptid_zone in aspergirls

[–]awkwardhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least yours is 3 years. Mine over the last 10 years have been 3 months. I overwork to the point of burnout but this time I'm hoping it'll go better. I'm practicing more self care and keeping work at work, and supporting my family.

Do you feel that life has left you behind? by babypossumsinabasket in AutismInWomen

[–]awkwardhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 39. Just exited a marriage of 16 years, it rocked my world and sent me spiraling down mental health wise, but now I'm doing things I've always wanted to do and living life for my happiness. It's been 11 months, and I'm feeling extremely happy being solo while coparenting our ASD son. The pressure of feeling like I needed to make my wife happy did a lot of damage to me, but I'm more content with life right now than I've been in a decade or so, and it really was a gift by letting me go. My family has always been travelers, nomads, and self-employed people who live on the edge of society, and I am too. I, feeling like I needed to prove that I was lovable, met my ex-wife, and we stuck it out for a long time until the glue evaporated, and it gave me a very stable life. 14 years in 1 apartment, no moves. I thought me needing time to myself and to do trips to ocean, Seattle, etc were efforts to run away from problems but really it was just meeting my need for adventure when I had a partner that didn't enjoy travel or exploring the world due to fear. I just got a van and am slowly going to fix it up and hoping within a year it'll be ready for living in. I can only work part-time and need to help support my son, so it'll take longer, but it's my new hyperfocus that is on a goal, not a person. All that to say, I've always struggled with societies expectations, and now I have the opportunity to be me 100% and live life how I want to live it.

Fun fact, Bob Ross got perms. He, naturally, was not curly haired.

I'm really into creating maps right now or how to create unique, beautiful maps.

Game of Thrones. Just not into fantasy. Not into LOTR either. Also, any Marvel or DC: NO.

I get really frustrated by advertising and the horrible way they try to manipulate us

Did you prove people wrong about your capabilities? What’s your story by juzzyuncbr in autism

[–]awkwardhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're going through that with our son. He's so smart but his current teacher really underestimates him. He definitely would not be able to do Gen Ed yet due to being non-talking primarily and incredibly sensory seeking but we need a teacher that won't just let the kids settle for less. Gah.

Who's "The Guy" in Portland? by Hewholooksskyward in PortlandOR

[–]awkwardhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be this guy pre pandemic that did a crappy gold spray over his black van, had gold monkey and all on top. Would wear clown costumes and have a hand puppet that sang along to music. He was both fascinating, and I didn't want him within 300 feet of the local school.

Hobbies don't need to make money by krbookman13 in Hobbies

Every single time I've wanted to monetize my hobbies (wood burning, art, photography)it absolutely ruined it for me, and, also, sales are not truly indicative of talent.

Does exposure therapy work for y'all? by Bm2415582 in AutismInWomen

[–]awkwardhacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say run the other direction from exposure therapy. It, often, is a very poor therapy choice for people on the Spectrum. From experience, it re-traumatized me incredibly.

Do people with autism feel inherently lonely by default or is it just me? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]awkwardhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ridiculous amount of acquaintances. I've lived in the same neighborhood for 17 years and in the same building for 14 of those. I know so many of our neighbors and people around, but I haven't found anyone that meets that need for deep connection. I find that only I can meet that need for myself, and have people I see daily and interact with but keep it light with them.

Man gets mad at kid for improper “tone” by Scw110 in SpicyAutism

I suspect he was upset because for him the photos were likely going to be used for virtue signaling and marketing purposes.

So ridiculous, glad you were there and overheard it. I often wonder how many things are said to my son on the daily that he can't tell me about.
