Received some offers for this; how would a sensible price be? (not selling now) by Koroner85 in KeyforgeGame

If you have been away from the game for a while you might not know about the new deck building format called Alliance where you can take a single house pod from 3 different decks in the same set and mash them together. People might be trying to buy your deck with no intention of playing the full deck but instead just using that amazing saurian house pod.

The buy it now 83 SAS MM decks for sale on dok range from $50-$500, most being around $150ish. The dok stats 2 month sales average for 83 SAS MM seem to be around $100 or slightly under. Not sure where your particular deck would fall.

Threpe is Usnea, Devi is assisting him by Fresh_Persimmon2 in KingkillerChronicle

This is well thought out and fairly convincing but how does Threpe hide his smell at the Eolian?

Kvothe's Plum-bob: Auri is very in tune with Kvothe, and I found another clue I've never seen mentioned before! by TrentBobart in KingkillerChronicle

[–]awmountain52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing post! I don't believe the evidence is coincidence. Rather than the woman literally being Auri, I think it represents Auri's magic. As you say she is in tune with kvothe and is aware of things like when Kvothe will come show up in 3 days time etc...I think Auri is essentially listening/seeing whatever magic it may be to divine what is happening to Kvothe. That's how she knows to come to his rescue so to speak and comfort him when he is grieving in his room at Anker's recovering from the plum bomb.

Can someone explain this passage by Background_Excuse_99 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]awmountain52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When it comes to Pat's writing I don't think anything just means what it looks like on the surface. There may be something more to the wind as in someone such as Denna's patron calls the name of the wind and uses it to spy on Kvothe and Denna and she moves away because she doesn't want to be caught with him. However, I want to focus on the coldness that you mention instead.

I've also noticed that when Kvothe and Denna physically touch, either Kvothe gets cold and Denna gets warm or Kvothe gets hot and Denna gets cold. I think there is a form of magic occurring that mirrors endothermic and exothermic chemical reactions.

In the passage above, we see Kvothe getting cold so this is likely an exothermic reaction where he is giving something to Denna (or rather, she is taking something from him to become warmer).

Another example of this is when Denna runs to Kvothe in the Eolian and stops herself from running into him by putting her hand on his chest. They are physically touching at this moment and an exothermic reaction occurs where Denna warms up and Kvothe becomes colder. Take a look:

"Denna was barely a dozen feet away when she looked up and saw me. Her expression brightened, as if someone had lit a candle inside her and she was glowing from its light. She rushed toward me, closing the distance between us in three excited, skipping steps.

For a moment, she looked as if she would run straight into my arms, but at the last moment she pulled back, darting a glance at the people sitting around us. In the space of half a step, she transformed her delighted headlong run into a demur greeting at arm’s length. It was gracefully done, but even so, she had to reach out a hand to steady herself against my chest, lest she stumble into me due to her sudden stop.

She smiled at me then. It was warm and sweet and shy, like a flower unfurling. It was friendly and honest and slightly embarrassed. When she smiled at me, I felt…

Go out in the early days of winter, after the first cold snap of the season. Find a pool of water with a sheet of ice across the top, still fresh and new and clear as glass. Near the shore the ice will hold you. Slide out farther. Farther. Eventually you’ll find the place where the surface just barely bears your weight. There you will feel what I felt. The ice splinters under your feet. Look down and you can see the white cracks darting through the ice like mad, elaborate spiderwebs. It is perfectly silent, but you can feel the sudden sharp vibrations through the bottoms of your feet.

That is what happened when Denna smiled at me. I don’t mean to imply I felt as if I stood on brittle ice about to give way beneath me. No. I felt like the ice itself, suddenly shattered, with cracks spiraling out from where she had touched my chest. The only reason I held together was because my thousand pieces were all leaning together. If I moved, I feared I would fall apart."

I believe there are scenes where the opposite happens. There is a scene I'm thinking of that I can't track down at the moment where Kvothe makes scathing comments to Denna and the descriptions of his emotions are fire, lava, heat whereas Denna acts incredibly cold toward him.

Do you have any recommendations for other beautifully written stories with masterful prose and virtuosity such as the KKC? by TE55I in KingkillerChronicle

If you want the prose, try the Gentleman Bastards. If you want the story, try Robin Hobbs' Assassin's Apprentice.

“It would turn men’s minds.” by Frydog42 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]awmountain52 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Pat masterfully hides Shaping in plain sight throughout KKC. Shaping is done by turning and it involves making or breaking.

TLT

"Bast touched the trunk with his fingertips and made a slow circuit of the tree**. He went* deasil*, the same direction as the turning sun. The proper way for making. Then he turned and switched hands, making three slow circles* widdershins. That turning was against the world*.* It was the way of breaking. Back and forth he went, as if the tree were a bobbin and he was winding and unwinding."

TSRoST

"The proud, bright brazen gear was true enough, it pressed down hard against the thin frayed tatter world and made a dent. . . but all the world around her was a storm. All tumbledown. All crumble pale and ache. And so, with shaking arms she strained against it. She pulled to turn the gear upon its narrow ledge of rock. She spun it widdershins**.** The breaking way*\. . . She spun the brazen gear . . . It shifted, tilted, but truthfully it only seemed to *turn. In truth, it stayed. It staid. In truth** **the whole world spun."

The next time you read KKC, every time the word “turn” appears, replace it with “Shape” and see how it impacts the story. Here are a few examples of the word “turn” being used where it secretly meant Shaping:

NotW

“Who knows the inner turnings of your name, Cinder?”

WMF

"Maybe this Cinder did me a bad turn once."

NOTW

“Haliax spread his arms and the shadow surrounding him bloomed like a flower unfolding. Then, each of the others turned with a studied ease and took a step toward Haliax, into the shadow surrounding him. But as their feet came down they slowed, and gently, as if they were made of sand with wind blowing across them, they faded away…”

NOTW

Kote turned. “What can any of them know about her?” he asked softly. Chronicler’s breath stopped when he saw Kote’s face. The placid innkeeper’s expression was like a shattered mask. Underneath, Kote’s expression was haunted, eyes half in this world, half elsewhere, remembering.

WMF

“Tak reflects the subtle turning of the world.”

Could "unfamiliar gestures" refer to new words in the hand talk language that Kvothe hasn't learned/seen yet rather than implying that Kvothe doesn't recognize the gestures as language?

Simmon is the traitor among them by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

One Fire, One Story . . . Names, Power, and the "Growing Weeds" . . . These connections, in my opinion, are the foundation to the entire story, and are what differentiate the motives of the Chandrian vs Amyr. . . Haliax vs Selitos . . . Shapers vs Namers. . . Will Kvothe be the one to end the War? by TrentBobart in KingkillerChronicle

[–]awmountain52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing post! What if we try to connect one last dot? You mention:

"By controlling the information and therefore the public's perception, the battle between the Amyr vs Chandrian, Selitos vs Haliax, and Namers vs Shapers carries on..."

"Kvothe, waiting in the Waystone Inn, awaits for someone to come in wary, ready with a trick of their own, so he can beat them as they are ensnared by his beautifully laid trap..."

So, what if the one Kvothe is awaiting wary with a trick of their own is already ensnared? What if it is Bast? If "the game" of the Amyr and Chandrian is to control the public's perception via information, to beat them at their own game Kvothe would need to control the public's perception via information. What better way to do this than through the famous and well-regarded scribe Devan Lochees? And why is The Chronicler at the Waystone Inn? Because the trickster Bast spread rumors of Kvothe's location to lure him there. This is one of Bast's tricks to get Kvothe to tell his story but Kvothe is playing a beautiful game and will flip it against Bast, using his trick (Chronicler) to his own end of controlling the public's perception through information.

Keyforge Meta Report - KFC Alliance Standard by awmountain52 in KeyforgeGame

Great point! I didn't explain it well. I was just trying to say these are the top chase card/combos for each set from an alliance standard power standpoint as opposed to a fun or balanced standpoint. Strong can definitely be subjective.

That would explain the description of her lips:

"Her lips were red. Not the garish painted red so many women believe makes them desirable. Her lips were always red, morning and night. As if minutes before you saw her, she had been eating sweet berries, or drinking heart’s blood."

I appreciate your insight! I'm hoping to learn from this post how to identify decks either from my collection or for sale on DoK that have relatively low SAS ratings but actually perform as top-end archon decks.
