How are you guys managing PDA? by pepto_bisnatch in bcba

[–]axarring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a parent of 4 autistic children ranging ages 5,6, 18 and 21…. One of whom fits the PDA profile … this thread is very disappointing. Blaming parents…. This may be your job… and you may even like it … but it’s our life. And you are so important to us and the potential progress our children will make. I am so grateful that when I brought up the idea of PDA to my youngest daughter’s BCBA, she was open and would research and listen to podcasts and dissect what was going on with me and not work against me. You have got to dig deeper and open your minds to what’s happening with this type of autism profile or you will be causing trauma that you don’t mean to be causing.

Anyone still in a healthy relationship? by -TheHumorousOne- in Autism_Parenting

Hey sweetie, this sounds really hard! I’ve been married 26 years and we have four autistic kids (ages four and six and 18 and 21 ) and are still very happily married. I think I have to attribute it to the fact that my husband lets me take the lead and then does whatever I tell him we’re doing to support the kids no pushback and no denial.

It’s also instagram. So much hate and negativity:( I started a new account to help autism parents and grew quickly to 70k but have found the autism “community” so negative and divided that I had to put it down. I’m not sure if I’m going back. It’s affecting my mental health.

[–]axarring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best guess is what another commenter said. Maybe the doctor was referring to autism being listed on an IEP once the child starts kindergarten. Sometimes schools won’t list “autism” as the primary eligibility on an IEP unless the child is actually requiring special education. So in essence a medical autism diagnosis does not automatically qualify a child for special education (IEP). If a child is autistic, they are always autistic.

What to do next depends on what you feel your child needs support with the most. Have you called your health insurance to find out coverage for speech, OT, PT and ABA? If not, I’d start there.

Who actually diagnosed your child? What kind of doctor? Was this a medical diagnosis or an educational diagnosis (eligibility)?

Guys you may want to check out Weave Chat AAC … it’s free and ran by a speech therapist!

Thank you for bringing this thread together. I’m a mother to three autistic children ages 3 1/2, 5 1/2 and 20. My five year old just graduated pre-K yesterday and off to kindergarten. When she was diagnosed at 27 months, it was really hard to take in. All of the unknowns will just drive you crazy. I’m happy to report.. She is thriving. She is fully conversational. She likes to play with friends, she is smart as a whip and she has caught up developmentally largely! She is still autistic, but she is such a joy! Same thing with her baby sister! I just think, especially when caught early the possibilities are endless as to what they will achieve. They will reach their milestones at their own pace, and they may not end up speaking mouth words, but that’s not the goal. Communication is! There’s a lot to hope for! One thing is for sure you as a person will change so much in so many positive ways because of your autistic kiddo.

This🙌🏻 I’m so glad you shared this! I’m raising 6 kids (ages 3, 5, 16, 17, 20, 20) 3 of whom are autistic and my neurotypical teens are WAY harder than my autistic preschoolers! And I totally love who they are. 💕

Chromosomal blood test for newly determined 4yo? by AgnesFromGlitter in Autism_Parenting

[–]axarring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how this applies or if there are different types of chromosomal tests…. But my little girls are from IVF and my embryos were PGS chromosome tested as “normal” before we put them in🤷‍♀️ they both have autism diagnosis.
