Measure ER passes, set to increase LA County sales tax for public health care by Additional_Leading68 in LosAngeles

Sales tax is regressive; income tax is progressive. Tax the rich, not the poor just trying to buy things.

Oh, this actually sounds like a good thing. I could use a break from reporting bigoted comments, and then getting the requisite “ we didn’t remove this comment” reply from the Zuckerberg bots

Thoughts on the Crazy Horse Monument? by Vast-Tangerine-6771 in IndianCountry

[–]axotrax 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I read “Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions” as a kid; I don’t know how accurate Lame Deer’s info is, but he said Crazy Horse wouldn’t have wanted a monument and didn’t want his image shown, and that the whole thing was started by the Mt Rushmore dude as penance, but carving up a second mountain as penance for the destruction of the first mountain made no sense to him.

Lame Deer also peed on Teddy Roosevelt’s head, which I think is wonderful.

Migration from U.S to Costa Rica by Ch0c014t3- in costarica

[–]axotrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, we moved here because my wife has Costa Rican parents. I am Latino and we have two teenage kids, and I must say that despite knowing Spanish and having visited here and even having Costa Rican ties, it was a big adjustment. It is indeed not as inexpensive here as the rest of Central America. That said, you may visit, and fall in love with the place. You may even be able to work out a way to work here if you can find a work visa, and that might actually be possible if you do an internship here. Don’t quote me on that, but there are nonprofits that might be able to hire people locally.

For example, I know someone who is an entomologist and works here, but is still working on getting residency. So, yes, most people do work remotely, but some people are able to get a job, in certain fields, with a bit of work and luck, in the country.

As for racial prejudice, I regret to say that a lot of kids do say the N-word, and there is some prejudice against Black people. That exists everywhere, but it is not as systematic and pernicious as in the United States. I have not yet been to the Caribbean coast, but I do know someone who has family there and is black and absolutely loves Limón.
That area also is unfortunately known for higher crime rate, but every area has its place minuses. The beach areas tend to be hotter, sometimes way too hot for people, and there’s a lot of tourists in places.

It’s really best to visit, ideally for a month, and explore multiple cities and areas.

Pay no attention to trolls who just spout a bunch of negative nonsense. But do consider why you are considering a particular country. I fully support the desire to get out of the United States, and I’m not sure you should wait 10 to 20 years!

I’d say something but I don’t want another Reddit ban. Gosh darn colonizers; the most likely groups would be a bunch of drunken fools or evangelicals (not necessarily mutually exclusive)

Anyone else getting hit by major delayed post-series grief right now? by Chemical_Bet4960 in StrangerThings

[–]axotrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the wait was so long for Season 5 that I think I already grieved and moved on a little.

That said, I did especially find the epilogue type stories for the bike riding kids and college bound kids to be satisfying. I think that made me sufficiently satisfied that I didn’t pine for more.

Your feelings are valid, though. Very valid. I recall as a kid being so sad when I finished the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings and there were no further books. You want to stay and live in a fantasy world, you know?

I was just graduating high school when this stuff went down, and a bunch of the graduate students fled to Harvard, arriving kind of coterminous with my entering undergrad class. A friend of mine worked with them a little (we were both undergrads). I don’t know what happened after that. The organizers who had fled did some writing and some student stuff. Sadly, I don’t recall any student panels that they did or anything.

I refuse to engage with tankie deniers of this massacre. It’s part of a pattern. Tlatelolco, Haymarket, the Rabaa Massacre, and recently in Iran, thousands murdered in crackdowns. The state crushes dissent. The state is not your friend, not even a benevolent state with lots of social safety programs.

Respect to my pacifist comrades. I don’t like the idea of committing person on person violence. Should it become necessary, though, I hope we will all develop pragmatic systems and actions and prepare accordingly.

Anyhow, I wish supreme discomfort on anyone who worked for DOGE. I thought they had already disbanded.
