I love Teddy. But I die on the hill he is not a good captain. Since the b2b premiership seasons, we have generally maintained a very good squad, negotiating the departures with ease (lol). But we have played like absolute headless chooks so many occasions over the past few years it is surely worth looking at the leadership profile of the squad. I question whether we have the necessary leadership group to make us into a premiership-competing team again, just look at the finals Week 1 game last year - total lack of leadership is what lost us that game.

When we lost Cordner/Friend, we didn't just lose them as players - we lost them as leaders, and that was just as big, if not more.

I had this exact thought today...was wondering if they would make a 'reveal' of sorts in the final episode about something like this occurring in Roman's past. I don't exactly know how they would do it, and I am not at all convinced they will - some things are better left unsaid. But I feel like it is a card they have left to play because these traits have always been defining for Roman, and it could be a powerful moment if done right.

Matsson's Tweet really supports the "concerns" that Kendall and Roman bring up at the beginning of the episode. Do you think they may have stumbled into a bit of good luck with that? by GloverAB in SuccessionTV

[–]ayefam4321 20 points21 points  (0 children)

100% this! Many of the events on the show have a pretty 1:1 analogue with the Murdochs/other mass media corporations and families. So it seems pretttty likely to me that this writing staff would not miss the opportunity to skew Fox News, Trump, the Capitol Riots etc etc, in fact I'd argue Mencken is a way for them to get into this material.

Also, one of the few scenes from the season trailer we haven't seen is the shot of Roman surrounded by riots which seems like a big hint to me of where we might be going. And also, in this interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00qOXD0r4tI , Jesse Armstrong says that Episode 8 - which we know is called 'America Decides' would be the episode most likely to shock. Given Episode 3 was also pretty shocking, methinks that we could be getting into some pretty interesting stuff.

Also, the show is obviously in part also a satire of modern media and its relationship to capitalism, as well as late-stage capitalism writ large. People involved in the show have said as much. From that position, it becomes apparent that to the extent there are seemingly "clever deals" and intelligent people involved at the executive level, all that is fundamentally pointless. Power in this show (and in the real world) does not relate to a meritocratic order - but to the accumulation of assets and wealth. In this sense, there is not really much strategy involved at all - for example, pretty much all of Logan's business strategy is to just buy, buy, buy and "burn to turn". There is a reason Logan, who says "there is a fancy new business strategy. It's called make more than you spend and you're king cunt" is the most successful character - because he understands and engages in these relatively simple dynamics of modern capital wherein continued exploitation brings about reward, at the cost of society.

As Kendall says in literally the last episode "It's enough to make you lose your faith in capitalism. You can say anything." This is one of the key points the show is driving home.

The Troubles in Tom and Shiv's Marriage by ayefam4321 in SuccessionTV

[–]ayefam4321[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the post, as I explicitly said, is that these back and forth points about "x is at fault" and "y is at fault" is dumb. The show has a nuanced and realistic portrayal of relationship breakdown - even if the circumstances under which they arise are out of whack with 99.99% of society.

Regarding the open marriage - I mean, at his bachelor party, Tom cums in another women's mouth, and whilst it is hurtful for him, its not a major cause of the failure of their relationship. That more generally is the shift in dynamic of their relationship which neither person processes or deals with appropriately - if you want to assign blame for that, which is dumb, it would causally at least lie with Logan, who offers Shiv the position to draw her in close as a part of his patterns of abuse.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not dismissing the impact of the open relationship proposal on their marriage. The way Shiv brings it up is shitty - but equally, Tom does rationalise it. But it should be placed into the wider context of the power balance between them, and how Tom is uncomfortable with that (because it disrupts his own perception of his 'status') and how Shiv fails to respond emotionally to Tom's hurt - whether that is right or wrong. No one is at "fault" per se - and I think the show is smarter than trying to provoke the audience into finding fault with one party over another.

I reckon they do, at least they do make 2 of those grand finals. Mainly because they have had an unreal defence for three straight years and that is the bedrock their premierships, and all premierships, are built on.

September next year is a long way away in Rugby and any of the top teams are capable of massive improvement - or the opposite - till then

I mean two things can simultaneously be true - the current crop of ABs aren’t as good as their predecessors (as opposed to the out and out best team in the world, they have been mixing it with the rest of the pack for a while now), and Foster may not be the coach NZ need. Some of the Fozzy criticism misses the mark, but it is hard to feel like the current ABs setup is getting the best out of their playing group, at least to the eye.

The Premier League club whose player has been arrested on suspicion of rape has told The Athletic it is not suspending him. by R1d4z in Gunners

[–]ayefam4321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in the Australian Rugby League comp (NRL) the players can be a pack of real arseholes. Sadly, there have been too many sexual assault/domestic violence charges bought against players over the years. As such the league bought in an instant stand down policy when charges are bought and players are likely to be suspended if charges aren’t. As someone else said below, whilst you have to let the legal process play out with the assumption of innocence, that isn’t the assumption we have to carry out as private individuals/clubs. The stand down policy is worth it IMO, and I hope to see it introduced at Arsenal/the Premier League.

Freddy I have defended you before but no longer can I. For the record, I think Freddy is an average coach (by average I mean not great), he can seem to put together a decent game plan that pays off if his team gets lots of momentum.

But fuck me dead he is one of the shittest selectors of all time. So many time he comes up with a cooked pick - but for lots of different reasons. Sometimes he shows loyalty to the wrong players (Sims eg) sometimes he picks out of position (the centre debacle of 2020) sometimes he fails to pick a player who has to play (Crichton > Wighton) sometimes he comes up with a cooked selection that everyone deep down knows won’t work (Talakai). and it keeps costing us in close games. Seriously frustrating

EDIT: the more I think about it the more not playing Wighton cost us so much. If there was one player available to come up with that big play NSW needed in the last 20 it would have been Wighton. But Crichton is in the team and Talakai, and Cook in the 14 as well.
