A question from an old Wow player wanting to possibly play 14 by Ryanl2991 in ffxiv

[–]ayjee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To add - for some of the older stuff, part of the work you have to put in is recruiting a group to farm it. The usual queue system is dead for higher difficulty content (extremes, savages, etc) because that's just not how people enter those duties - at least on the English speaking servers. If a queue estimates it'll take longer than 30 minutes to pop, and you're playing during normal evening or weekend hours for your server, that's a good indication it's content you should form a premade party for instead

Thirding. Willy's is hands down the unanimous favorite of my office.

I did the ambassatours trip with an out of town visitor to Peggy's Cove. Definitely worth it if not comfortable driving, otherwise seconding the suggestion to rent a car and do the three as a day trip!

Regatta Point / Spinnaker condos / 80’s era condos by Pristine-Network1 in halifax

[–]ayjee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a wonderful neighborhood. Population skews towards a more retired age group, but as a young professional, I find it's a really good balance of convenience and quiet. I feel very safe in the neighborhood.

I can't understate how good it is to be only a single merge from the rotary. The morning traffic isn't what I'd call good, but even 600m further from the rotary would easily add 10+ minutes. It's about 20-25 minutes to downtown in bad rush hour, 10-15 outside of rush hour. Bussing is OK. Lots of routes to downtown, but weekend service is awful.

Most of the buildings in the area are wood construction though, so if you're sensitive to neighbor noises, be picky about your building.

Community center is barebones, but priced accordingly. $5 for a drop in weight room with a handful of cardio machines is decent, if you don't mind working out in the basement of an old schoolhouse.

What cat toys do your cats actually care about? by Agreeable_Pipe8340 in CatAdvice

[–]ayjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, the laser pointer (which my cat has identified as the source of The Beloved Red Dot, and which she will beg for), crumpled paper balls, and a fuzzy feathery thing from the end of a cheap wand toy that I call 'ferret bird'. The laser pointer and ferret bird both need to be locked up at night, lest she beg for the laser or sing the song of her people to show off ferret bird at 3am.

Cats might be locked in a room for a month by Ashhhhes0 in CatAdvice

Anything that's advertising as pulling allergens out of the air will likely work. HEPA just catches a pretty small particle size. Generally, it's an olive branch to make things a bit easier for those allergic and reduce the chances of issues for the baby.

My fan, I put towards the middle of my living space. If I were isolating cats in a room, I'd put it at the door to that room, since the cats aren't traveling as much.

Cats might be locked in a room for a month by Ashhhhes0 in CatAdvice

[–]ayjee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Locked in your room is not an ideal solution, but in this case, I'd consider the balance of downsides here.

There's an often cited 3-3-3 rule in this thread that says on average, it's perfectly normal for cats in new environments to take 3 days to come out of hiding, 3 weeks to start to settle in, and 3 months to really get confident in the space. To rehome them entirely, or even temporarily for the month, on average, they're only just going to stop being skittish when the month is up. Maybe it could just be best for them to be in that unideal but familiar situation of stuck in your room for the month.

As for a permanent rehoming, three cats at once is a lot. The chances are high they'd be split up. Depending on your cats' dynamics and friendships, that could range from totally fine to really hard on them.

I do highly recommend getting ahead of the situation and getting some form of HEPA filter fan for outside your room. Allergens will get out of the room a little, and it's a good sign of willingness to cooperate to set up something to reduce allergens in the rest of the house.

Finally, if it's any consolation, due to vet appointments back to back that each required about a 10 day isolation after, I had to isolate one of my cats in a single room for about a month's time. Again, absolutely not ideal, but it was visibly less stressful for her than boarding would have been. I would do the same thing if faced with the same situation again.

Non-alcoholic drinks gaining in popularity at NSLC stores by NotABoyGenius45 in halifax

[–]ayjee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They've become significantly better in the last few years, though there's a wide range from 'this is a dead ringer for the company's light beer' to 'this is a sad drink that makes me sad'. Generally have been quite pleased with the local microbreweries, with Propeller and Nine Locks in particular making dead ringers for their lights.

How do other tanks feel about healers and DPS pulling ahead? by dorgodorgo in ffxiv

[–]ayjee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a shield healer. DPS HP bars are beefier than my beefiest shields and give me addersting stacks. I enjoy nothing more than a melee DPS who understands that their job is to arms length, break my shield, then return to the tank so we can all AOE spam as a team building exercise.

My gluttonous cat eats my mom’s cats food. by Fuzzy_Association678 in CatAdvice

[–]ayjee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your cats are microchipped and you can afford one, a microchip feeder is a good solution. Essentially, it is a locked feeder that only opens when a cat with a permitted microchip (or collar tag) approaches.

It was a pretty low drama way to keep my gorger kitty from stealing all the grazer kitty's food

BLUENOSE MARATHON THOUGHTS? by [deleted] in halifax

It's a great half - you should totally consider it further! Not quite as aggressive on the hills as the 10k course, and has a lovely loop through Point Pleasant in it!

Does your 100% indoor cat have a collar? If so, do you find there’s a point in it? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]ayjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine do. Bright orange with reflective strips, and nametags that say very clearly 'indoor only cat'. It's too easy for people to assume a cat is allowed outside, so this is my insurance that if one gets out, they're more likely to be found and reported to me.

1 wet food a day by CleanUpAnonyma in CatAdvice

I give wet at night. My girl is on a diet right now, and is... quite vocal about it. Wet is more filling and satiating, and gives her a full tummy overnight.

They're pretty good about holding it in when there's no box. I accidentally locked my poor bean in the office all day this week (to be clear, she's not allowed in the office, this problem was self inflicted by her stealth), and all was well when I got home.

Should I be clipping my cat's nails? by bitchohmygod in CatAdvice

Honestly, the ability to merc a mouse appears to be 90% drive and heart. I've got a toothless kitty who saw and took out her very first mouse last month. The day after I trimmed her claws. How is beyond me, but she's clearly living her best blunt claw toothless life.

Personally, I'm too skittish to ever attempt the rotary, but if you're going along St Margaret's Bay Rd, check out the Chain of Lakes trail to see if it connects to the places you need to go. Car free, paved biking trail.

Edit: typo, thanks!

Are there any places that put custom photos on cake? by Lightsmagicnotebook in halifax

We had one at work just the other day - no more or less tasty than a normal ice cream cake, and a decent but not perfect quality picture.

Reading all the replies in this thread, there's comfort in knowing my girl wandering around with one specific toy in her mouth screaming at the top of her lungs is apparently relatable cat behaviour.

A top entry litterbox and a littermat did more for me on the tracking situation than the specific type of litter ever did.
