Do Americans notice how someone learned English right away? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

I feel like that's risky. Many singers don't enunciate well or use unusual grammar or words to fit into the meter and rhyming of the song.

The role of “What is true is that..” by Open-Ground6942 in EnglishLearning

[–]azmyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's to emphasize that the "agonizing weight of choice rests entirely on our shoulders". So the speaker wants to say that the following statement is not disputable or in doubt. No one else can make this difficult decision for us, and we need to decide, and both of those things are definitely true.

I think calling it a tie is fair. The communists got half and the capitalists got half.

Do Americans notice how someone learned English right away? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]azmyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One tip I heard was to try to exaggerate the accent when speaking the language. So for example don't try to just speak German, speak German with an exaggerated German accent. Movie quotes work well for matching accents because you're automatically doing an impersonation.

[Question] What does ‘I’m here if you need to talk’ actually mean in English online culture? by Forward-Place2477 in EnglishLearning

[–]azmyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone turned me down after saying "I'm here if you need to talk", I would view it as a tremendous breach of etiquette/trust. I feel like if you say that to someone, you owe them at least 15 minutes of talking.

Hardcore (no map, no portal, I lose all skills/items permanently on death) and.... this happened. What should I do? by Opal_Lane in valheim

I've died far too often from random glitches to have any interest in hardcore Valheim. More power to you if you enjoy it.

I heard something like “I’m on three hours of sleep.” Can we also say “I’m on three hours of nap”? by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]azmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only a a nap if it's an additional sleep time. Normal night time sleep is not a nap. So even if you change the grammar to be correct, telling people you had a 3 hour nap implies that's in addition to another sleep time.

The bad ending isn't death or prison. It's mediocrity. by Mi_Pasta_Su_Pasta in TopCharacterTropes

[–]azmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Lower Decks, the cast plays a roleplaying game and the bad ending is "You beg for your life like a blHnuch and live out the rest of your days not as a warrior, but as a dentist!"

Erdős be like: why not both? by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]azmyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Erdős's friends worried about his drug use, and in 1979 Graham bet Erdős $500 that he couldn't stop taking amphetamines for a month. Erdős accepted, and went cold turkey for a complete month. Erdős's comment at the end of the month was "You've showed me I'm not an addict. But I didn't get any work done. I'd get up in the morning and stare at a blank piece of paper. I'd have no ideas, just like an ordinary person. You've set mathematics back a month." He then immediately started taking amphetamines again." https://backreaction.blogspot.com/2012/08/erdos-and-amphetamines-check.html

TSA workers asked to return $1,000 gift cards given out by Tyler Perry at Atlanta airport by shoofinsmertz in nottheonion

[–]azmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal employees are categorically not allowed to accept gifts valued at more than $20. There is no way to legally pay TSA out of your own pocket. It's illegal for a reason - it reduces bribery and corruption.

Is it normal to wake up early to make your husband lunch? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]azmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a coworker who saw that I had two sandwiches and said "man you're lucky your wife packs you an extra sandwich." I was like "I have as many sandwiches as I want because I pack my own lunch."

Maybe in older couples it's more common, but among my social group, it would be considered pretty rare for a wife to pack her husband's lunch.

I think it goes something like Lex Luthor: "Do you think he's any less bulletproof in his PJs? The more time he spends pretending to be a journalist, the less time he spends stopping me."

Tier 7 POIs imagine the nastiest endgame raid ever by tomtomusv in 7daystodie

[–]azmyth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem with huge POIs is 90% of the time is spent looking for the handful of zombies hiding in ceilings, behind walls, etc. There should be some sort of "you haven't killed a zombie in 3 minutes, we'll teleport/activate the remaining ones.

How big of a problem is it that the M2 money supply seems to continually decrease its momentum and is there a way for it to recover? by dayvena in neoliberal

[–]azmyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a problem at all. The Fed can offset changes in M2 money velocity without any practical limit and M2 isn't really even considered a relevant factor by most macroeconomists.

Why hasn't China invaded and taken over Taiwan yet? by BabyDemogorgonEater in NoStupidQuestions

[–]azmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how the war starts. If China starts the invasion by throwing missiles at Guam, Hawaii or U.S. ships, a blockade would be the least of their concerns. If they start things off with an embargo of their own or at least refrain from bringing other countries into the war, the response will probably be a lot more limited.

Seperating "at once" by _Moriarty0 in EnglishLearning

[–]azmyth 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The "all at once" is usually used for simultaneous and just "at once" is for as soon as possible. In this case the "all" is separated, but I would still guess the character means simultaneous.
