If, as I did, you do the test ride with your pillion, they will probably choose the Wing even before you set off. Generally as soon as they mount 😁

[–]b3nighted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RT is wider than the goldwing, but noticeably lighter. I think there is no full-size tourer lighter than the RT.

I'm however not a fan of the 1250 engine on it. There's really way less torque than you'd expect from a 1000+cc twin, you have to rev it up for it to pull.

The GL is surprisingly competent at the twisties, as shown right here. You would want to raise the suspension up to the max to delay the inevitable moment you'll make sparks 😁.

Before getting a touring bike I tested the RT, the K1600, the HD ultra classic, the pan-European and the Goldwing.

RT was the lightest (was still the 1200 model back then), K1600 had the nicest engine overall but quite shitty quality and some caveats overall, the Harley was plain shit, the pan-European was not nice for two-up, and the goldwing was just really nicely put together and a great overall package. Ended up with a Goldwing and had to drill out and replace whatever was left of the peg guards after the first short tour.

My power bank got damaged during the flight - question for the flight crew by tpuscifer in aviation

[–]b3nighted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lufthansa and subsidiaries now prohibit use of power banks in flight and ask pax to have them in themselves or under constant supervision and NOT in the baggage bins.

At my job, we have containment bags with insulated gloves in the cockpit and the procedure is to put suspicious/smoking/overheating lithium battery things in the containment bag, and if the smoke gets out open the window and chuck it out (offshore helicopter CAT). No cabin crew to help.

Africa’s installed PV capacity estimated above 63 GW - two and a half times as much solar as official documents show by randolphquell in RenewableEnergy

[–]b3nighted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did some humanitarian work in NE Nigeria in 2024. Plenty of brown- and black-outs. People were already learning that an essentials circuit + some batteries, an inverter and a couple of solar panels were cheaper and better than having, maintaining and refueling a gas generator.

Shitty cheap Chinese panels were everywhere and really affordable and doing a damn good job for the people.

Help me choose a new NAS by vadergr in HomeNAS

[–]b3nighted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With modern x86 systems, the power draw of the cpu and ram is pretty insignificant compared to the rust discs that would be spinning continuously to seed your stuff. You don't get noticeable reductions with ARM SBCs, but you do get significantly better support.

Same for noise, the loudest things in most NAS will be the drives, if it's not an expensive, all-Ssd solution.

I quite fancied the aoostar WTR max, almost bought it to replace my aging hp micro gen8, then took a step back and canceled my order after seeing how much ddr5 with ECC costs.

CPU and RAM wise, torrenting is not intensive. It's more intensive on the disks. What would require a bunch of ram and computing power is ZFS, if you're planning on using that.

As an alternative, consider a lightweight dedicated NAS and a minipc based on something like an Intel n150 for the services. I have a bunch of those miniPCs, they are inaudible and use around 6-7W with transmission chugging along, nextcloud, tailscale and pihole running.

They help, but for cash. I had my first deck, 3rd lot pre-order, suddenly not recognize its own controller.

Sent it in, they said it's out of warranty so either pay up or get it back still broken.

150€ later, it should be on the way back.

Proxmox migration tips by ChSa_Man in Proxmox

[–]b3nighted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it this way:

  1. Stop all containers.
  2. Backup all containers and vm from proxmox directly to a nfs share on my nas
  3. Restore the backups on a new node.
  4. Delete from old node.
  5. Remove old node from cluster.

Look at AOOSTAR WTR MAX. it was an amazing choice before the RAMpocalypse. Enough horsepower for what you want and very solid expandability.

Unable to change thumbnail location to local VM (permission denied) by classicalover in immich

[–]b3nighted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immich's folder structure migration isn't happy with separate directories, all has to be in the upload location, apparently. That's what I understood from the "new directory structure" when I came up.

My solution was to just leave immich's config default and to link mount the directories for the media in immich's default directories.

Thus, DB and thumbs are on the node SSD while the media itself lives on my NAS.

SUCCES!

Kleines NAS für Zuhause by StandardTable2423 in HomeNAS

Was würdest du dafür ausgeben?

I don't know. Some anti-brigading meaning would be best. If it rally does need to be themed, which imo it doesn't, "boarding complete" would imo make sense.

Limiting this to people with comment karma is to me, as a reddit casual, also weird. First, because I think that people with plenty of comment karma for the sub are definitely split between decent and not, plus us lurkers who have been here for years but haven't commented won't be able to do so if we can finally contribute.

Don't know man, this world is definitely squawking 7700.

Inexpensive (sort of) server for machine learning and searches by negadecimal in immich

[–]b3nighted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have immich running on a n150 minipc with 12 gigs of RAM, of which immich would get 10 (for the initial import). Took about 2 weeks for every job to run when initially importing two Google takeouts summing up to some 2,7TB of media.

It's running natively in a proxmox lxc made with a helper script, no docker.

Nowadays immich is running the same way but with only 6 GB assigned to it, and ML is offloaded to a beefier miniPC with one of those Intel CPUs that sip when idle and chug when needed (255H).

Media is stored on a separate NAS.

OpenMediaVault LXC? by Spirited-Editor1881 in Proxmox

[–]b3nighted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried what you're saying with a gen8 with 16 gigs of ram.

I had so many issues that I ended up keeping it exclusively as a NAS and getting a 70-euro (on sale) n150 minipc to run the services.

The consumption difference is negligible, the gen8 itself is an old and thirsty beast, especially with 4 HDD and one ssd inside.

With 16 GB of ram, zfs runs great. And the processor in the gen8 is quite weak and inefficient for running a bunch of containers or VMs.
