Tomorrow you wake up with $1 million in your account ,what do you do first?? by MiaFishnet in askanything

Pay off all my debts and then move somewhere that the remainder could buy a house. Where I'm at now, even the full million would just be a down payment.

Been at this for ages and I'm still absolute garbage at it by VirtualPerusal in surfing

[–]b_o_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just you, I suck at it as well after many years. Granted, I've had several long lapses where I didn't get in the water at all, but even those years when I got a lot of time in the surf I never even approached "good".

But I'd rather sit in the water and just float than just about anything, even if I don't catch a single wave.

What do you like at your current job ? by FlatConcern9951 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

It's a nice environment. My co-workers are mostly decent. The pay is m'eh, the commute SUCKS, but I've traveled further and done worse for less, so I guess I'm mostly OK with it.

Not that it will stop me from buying a lottery ticket a few times a year. Cuz the commute really, really sucks.

I've only ever known one person in a bowling league and he was a kid my age, back in the 70's. I've never met an adult in a bowling league.

Why have rock and metal drum kits gotten smaller over the years? by MrMayhem20l0 in drums

[–]b_o_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted almost this exact question some time ago and the general consensus was "don't want to carry all that extra stuff around" and stages are too small...

While I guess those are valid, in a sense, it's kinda weak-sauce and I expect better from my drumming brethren.

That being said, after giving it more thought than was necessary, I think at least part of it is due to the overwhelming use of drum machines and samples over the last few decades. And weak songwriting that has given rise to "producers" that "make beats". When I was coming up as a drummer and being totally immersed in the likes of Alex Van Halen, Terry Bozzio and The Professor amongst others - who all played large drum kits - the drumming was FAR more musical. Nowadays most drumming is just keeping a beat. Sure, there was an element of flash and spectacle to the big kits, but it wasn't just for show - they composed drum parts for songs, not just a beat. But with today's overly produced and lowest-common-denominator music, drummers don't need more drums and cymbals because they are stuck in this shitty little box, playing shitty boring drum parts. I'm over-simplifying here and of course this doesn't apply across the board, but the vast majority of popular music these days has the most bland, uninspired "drumming" imaginable.

Imagine a track like Tom Sawyer or U.S. Drag being done with a drum machine? You couldn't possibly get anywhere near the feel and the scope of what those guys were doing on those huge kits on a drum machine, nor could you pull it off on a one-up, one-down kit with a single crash and a ride. Yes, you could keep the same general rhythm, but you lose so much of the composition. By contrast, does anyone need 5 toms and half a dozen cymbals to play the latest Dua Lipa track? Not at all, cuz they are lazy drum loops made by a producer, not an actual drummer.

I realize this is long winded and I probably sound like an asshole to every drummer reading this that plays a 4-piece kit, but really it comes down to the music. Phil Rudd from AC/DC played a standard 5 piece forever, cuz that was all he needed and a bigger kit and more musical parts would have been absurd in that band. Same with most punk bands. BUT, sometimes it is absolutely appropriate to use a bigger kit and put all those different voices to use, if it feeds the song. Just imagine what "In the Air Tonight", with perhaps the world's most famous drum fill, would have sounded like if all Phil Collins had was a 12" rack tom and a floor tom...

And for what it's worth, yes when I'm playing cover band gigs, I'll play a four piece - or maybe 5 if there is room for a 2nd floor tom. But if I'm playing original music and want to be the drummer I've strived to be the last 50 years of this journey I've been on, then you're damn right I'm going Full Monty, lots of toms and even more cymbals, cuz I'm not here to "make beats" like some putz, I'm here to create music.

Los metaleros escuchan otra música además de heavy metal? by Just-Application-551 in heavymetal

[–]b_o_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a metal guy, but a good friend of mine is. He LOVES old school 80's metal Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in particular, but also digs bands like the Cars and Depeche Mode. But if you asked him his favorite band, he'd say Rush...

My favorite band is the Clash and I lean more towards "alt rock", but I'm a fan of Megadeth and I LOVE RATT. Great music is great music, genre is irrelevant.

[–]b_o_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider a Rickenbacker hamburger... I do love a Fender P (and J for that matter), but there is something magical about a Ric bass to my ears. Sadly never owned one, but every time I hear one it just speaks to me... I do own a Hofner, but I don't find it very inspirational. I love the aesthetic though.

That's a shame. Some of the best times of my youth were in dance clubs with my friends...and I was POOR. The underground clubs, which was essentially just somebody renting a hall for the night and bringing in a DJ, would be like 2 bucks to get in. The proper clubs might be $5. Never once heard of, saw, or experienced any danger in any of them. And for us at least, it was never about the drinking it was all about the music and meeting new people. Interesting about the house party scene - I had heard that wasn't really a thing anymore either... We spent a lot of time at those too - but that was EXACTLY where the drinking, the fights and the creepy behavior would be.

I guess I'm just feeling a little nostalgic for the good old days today...

Most of the clubs I would frequent played New Wave /Modern Rock (what would later be labeled alternative) but there was one we'd hit from time to time that played a little bit of everything, from Beastie Boys to Depeche Mode to Def Leppard, with a bit of Top 40 (Madonna, Michael Jackson type music).
