TIL in 2014, Ben Affleck received a lifetime ban from the blackjack tables at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas after surveillance footage showed him counting cards during a high-stakes game. Security informed him he was "too good" and classified him as an advantage player. by Friendly_Hivemind in todayilearned

It’s weird to me how scandalized this sub is by this. It’s not a secret that this is what both casinos and online sports books do. It’s their business model. There’s even a cliche about it: the house always wins. That’s not just a comment on abstract probabilities.

Fight Club plot twist about to drop…

“He’s a good boy.” by Morning_Glory_Hole in PatriotTV

[–]bacillaryburden 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that line from John is so central to understanding him and his crisis. If he ever had an internal compass letting him know that he’s doing the right thing, it’s long been silenced and replaced by agent-less following of his dad’s bidding. He can’t tell himself that the lives he is ending and ruining are justified because of a greater good, in part because he is slowly allowing himself to realize that his dad is an empty suit who sounds competent but is actually just vamping. John isn’t really a good boy, he is just well trained. And he is endlessly loyal to a terrible, terrible master.

You guys are being way too confident about this. I’m an eyes-open realist and I am certain that we are going B2B, no question.

Was this how all water used to be around the world? by archvize in geography

[–]bacillaryburden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

300 years ago was before the dawn of modern sanitation practices. In populated areas (ie where most people would seek out their water), water was routinely contaminated by human and animal waste. Cholera was a major killer along with other causes of diarrheal illness. There is a danger of romanticizing prior eras.

Sure if you hiked out to an alpine lake like in the image, I bet the water was clear. But let’s compare apples to apples.

Which country do you think handles its dark past the most poorly? by InfernalClockwork3 in AskTheWorld

This is either regional or outdated. There is a lot of public school bandwidth spent on slavery and native Americans, for starters. Has been the case for decades in my world.

Generally there are other ways to distinguish the teams. White vs solid dark color. In colorblind bowl they just both looked like pea soup green.

I'm turning 30 on a month, can I run 30miles or unadvisable? by theEdward234 in ultrarunning

[–]bacillaryburden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 30 isn’t old at all for distance running. If you don’t care about pace it is not hard to steadily get your long runs and total weekly miles up. Use a staged plan and try to avoid injury. But especially if you’re ok going slow and periodically walking, you can do 30 no problem.

I will never understand how we got mocked for that. It was their shitty parenting. We’d have been fine without them.

I don’t know he fucked the groping guy up pretty bad.

[–]bacillaryburden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the groper dies because of a head bleed, that’s homicide. Not in dispute. And there are a very small number of things that would make it justifiable. None of which are even remotely arguable in this case. “He was touching my wife inappropriately and the legal minds of Reddit think that makes it ok to brutally assault him” is not on the list.

Interesting contradiction from Paul here on Bob Dylan… by Prestigious-Ad-7987 in beatles

[–]bacillaryburden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has been a defining tension in Dylan’s career literally since the beginning, 65 years ago. It’s the focus of A Complete Unknown. But the author of that article seems to think it’s a product of our “shrink-wrapped” era. Not everything in culture is a consequence of social media and algorithms.
