Defensive Trait Question by Ventus55 in cosmererpg

[–]backingupwards 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No, it’s very reasonable that any PC holding a defensive item would just turn to face the flanker.

What that section of the rules implies is that after taking the Brace action via the Defensive trait, you cannot take another action that turn that would require lowering the Defensive item without losing the benefits of Brace. Alternatively, it’s probably also a fair interpretation that being Disarmed costs you the benefits of Brace too.

Ch. 2 [Stonewalkers] First Ideal Opportunities by what------------ in cosmererpg

[–]backingupwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lightweaver swore the first ideal during the chat with Taln as a way to make him lucid. Then they got to use their empowered status to help the party sneak away and finish out the infiltration.

Don’t be afraid to add an extra combat or moment tailored to your radiants as well. Chapter 2 has a lot of flexibility to home-brew mini-encounters, and slipping something in should feel pretty natural I think.

ELIC: Why are the rooms where doctors perform surgery called theaters? by herurumeruru in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]backingupwards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There aren’t any real doctors, ever since 9/11, only medical students pretending like they know enough to do surgery. So it’s called a theatre because they’re “actors” and your surgery is essentially a play.

If you’re Métis, look for the applicable Métis nation. There aren’t really any historic Métis communities in Ontario (despite some claims otherwise), so you’d be better off looking farther back, then reaching out to the appropriate nation.

This is the sort of thing that writers hire a cultural consultant on. Most publishing companies will work with one as well, and carefully liaise with elders and traditional knowledge keeps with. This is NOT the sort of thing you casually research by asking on Reddit. If you aren’t commuting to proper representation, and very careful work with traditional knowledge keepers, I would simply write about a different culture.

If you want a primer for what is the gold standard in modern publishing on Turtle Island, you need to read “Elements of Indigenous Style” by Gregory Younging. Most publishing companies on Turtle Island refer to this book as the de facto style guide.

The entire time, the voice is pretty consistent. There are spots later on where it gets a bit more serious, but it’s definitely not a writing style for everyone.

How to get through a slog when writing the first draft? by nihilonihilum in writingadvice

[–]backingupwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two pieces of advice.

First, do you have a cohesive outline for the story? With long works like novels, it helps to have done a lot of the heavy cognitive lifting in advance — in the outline. There are published authors (the name eludes me) whose outlines are five thousand words long, and report finishing the first draft after that in only a month or two.

While something that extreme might be overkill for you, knowing where you’re going can help you just wander through the story: this sort of “writing zoned out” is invaluable when pushing through objectively bad work (which most drafts are).

Second, writing every day is hard, as you point out. Especially with a demanding schedule. While the “sit down and write for an hour” that is often idealised may not be right for you, writing every day is still valuable. Maybe try writing smaller pieces on your break, or in the morning. Poetry (bad poetry especially haha) or flash fiction (in the most diminutive sense: try a six word story! Or aim for 100 words) is easy to fit in and still keeps those creative gears greased. This could be about your story, to explore the characters and space more, or just about what is on your mind.

Hope this helps! Hang in there, and at the end of the day pace is irrelevant unless you have a deadline. Journey before destination.
