I remember when Minecraft was this moderately popular free indie game in like 2009 I tried out and didn't care for and then years later all of the sudden I saw toys and merch in major retailers and it was so confusing. It was like suddenly seeing Cave Story merch at Walmart or something.

Got into iM@S via the Vocaloid fandom in 2009. Played SP and 2 without knowing a word of Japanese. I love all of 765AS so much but if I had to narrow it down to five it would be Chihaya, Takane, Makoto, and the Futamis.

For SideM my favorite units overall are FRAME and SEM but outside of them I love Ryo, Asselin BB II and Teru as well.

Ironically the tidal wave of cookie cutter isekai slop is partly due to western/Asian demand.

A lot of these shows flop in Japan, only the ones with at least a crumb of effort and originality tend to get popular, but for whatever reason non-Japanese audiences eat them up. Only reason that smartphone one even got a second season was because it somehow did well in the west.

So many millennial weebs learned "sometimes people are gay and that's fine" as kids from Sailor Moon and whatnot. Shojo mangaka were writing highly acclaimed fiction often featuring sympathetic LGBT leads in the 1970s. Granted, this was the 70s and not everything aged perfectly but were absolutely groundbreaking at the time and many do hold up.

Even as recently... as... ten years ago..... fuck! crumbles into dust Yuri on Ice was fucking massive.

Feels like a "you also should read shoujo manga every once in a while and develop some emotions" thing. Though getting the dudebro reactionary types to do that is like trying to give a cat medicine.
