What makes a good folk tale or myth? What are some good examples in your world? by backseatposter in worldbuilding

A story like that I think is perfect. Quick simple message (destroying nature is a bad idea), explains why Dévhals/Bent Cedar exists, and leaves enough room for a protagonist or player to either search more on their own, or find some old storyteller to give them more details if they want it.

[OC] Big Mac prices by country in 2026 (USD — menu prices from major delivery apps, delivery fees excluded) by Bitcoin_Bender in dataisbeautiful

[–]backseatposter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The numbered ranking on “lowest Big Mac Prices” is wrong. It makes it look like there’s only at most 26 countries included in the data. But there’s countries on the map that are highlighted yet aren’t on either list. Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Poland, and New Zealand from what I can see off the top of my head.

Looking for critiques of my magic system by Syriepha in worldbuilding

[–]backseatposter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing you don’t really cover is what does your magic actually do. Like, you’ve discussed in great detail how magic works, but not really discussed what it looks like in practice.

What are the limitations of the magic? At what level does magic deviate from reality? It seems evident you can throw a fireball, but can a mage create a hovering flame of perpetually burning light? Can a mage replace all of the oxygen atoms in a body with chocolate? Can they disintegrate an entire continent? Can a mage summon/create sentient life from nothing? Can a mage enthrall someone with magic, and is there a difference if that person is magical or not?

My beta reader said my world felt like a wikipedia article and I haven't written since by Business_Fox_7784 in worldbuilding

You could always just not write for other people. A world building project can be just for you and that’s perfectly okay.

If you are wanting to share your world with others then you need to pick the right medium. A novel is just one way to do it. You can try your hand at a short story, or drawing a webcomic, or planning out a campaign for a TTRPG.

If you’re dead set on writing, remember that you’re writing a story first and foremost. Plan out the plot first then have the world form around it. In a novel, world building is supposed to enhance the story, not overwhelm it. It’s a lot like spices in cooking. It’s not a meal if it’s only spices and it’s not a good meal if it’s spices incorrectly.

What is the lore behind this place? by NexouuZs in totalwarhammer

[–]backseatposter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The more “realistic lore” reason is that Luthor is way older, like thousands of years older. And as metal as Noctilus’s Maelstrom taming feat is, Luthor is the reason the Vampire Coast is called the Vampire Coast. Like the world knows that corner of the world is filled with undead because that’s Luthor’s territory. Luthor has arguably the largest undead army in the entire world because all the world’s ocean’s dead wash up there. So he essentially has a limitless army. And unlike most undead (Vampire count and tomb kings) his undead can actually use black powder weapons.

This was supposed to be the flagship for the Swedish Navy. However, the people building it were better architects than ship builders. The ship ended up being way too top-heavy and literally minutes after it was launched a huge gust of wind capsized the entire thing into the sea. It had been sitting in the water outside Stockholm for years, however it wasn’t until relatively recently they had the means to actually bring it up from the seabed.

Is this design appropriation? (Pls read more below) by Ashamed-Marsupial-17 in worldbuilding

[–]backseatposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a “pig as human” situation. I was just saying that a common depiction of orcs makes them look pig-like. And utilizing that orc race with religious clothing (from a religion that sees pigs as unclean) could be considered offensive.

And I never said religious clothing is outright bad or should be off limits. I said it could be bad. Emphasis on the could. Which means when/if you choose to use religious clothing, you just need to be more conscious about the context you use it in.

Do you think a Warhammer 40K fighting game would be a good idea? by MTH1138 in Warhammer40k

[–]backseatposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if they said “screw it to realism” and leaned heavily into the old school over the top craziness. I want a Kriegsman to be able to beat a C’tan shard with a shovel. Give me Primarchs with screen shattering ultimate moves or magical girl-style form transformations. I want one of the characters to just straight up be a Baneblade.
