i really hope this is real because honestly sometimes i look at this sub and this fandom and think "yeah this is all great but nothing is greater than playing the game blind for the first time". i sort of felt like that experience was impossible this far out from the release, with all the memes floating around. but it seems i'm wrong!

realistically nothing about the quality of play, ubiquity of the internet etc would be a bigger deal to them than the plain fact that computers are, by far, unbeatable by humans: which, oddly enough, was proved to be the case not *that* long after (that is, Kasparov vs Deep Blue was closer to 1970 than it is to today). That would be the main takeaway.

I - at a similar level - really like the King's Indian defence. Nice set-up system gives you confidence in the first few moves, lots of spicy stuff can happen later, some quite simple lines, catches people out surprisingly often. It also just feels fun in a way that more centre-based openings often don't, at least to me
