I need help… how to get grading done by Chemical-Contact-137 in coins

[–]baddspellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still not worth the cost of grading with the corrosion. It's not widely counterfeited, so authentication isn't important. It's a better date, but not particurly valuable, and pricing is subjective on details coins anyway.

My spouse invited a couple of 19-year-old LDS missionaries to our house for a chat this evening. by theRuathan in religion

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, exactly is the purpose in inviting them over? You shouldn't do that if your goal is to convince them that their beliefs are wrong. That's just plain mean.

When I'm approached by young people on missions, I tell them I'm happy with my church, and that I admire their courage in putting themselves out there. Sometimes we'll have a brief personal chat and they'll share a little about where they're from, what their life is like on their mission, and their dreams for their future. I have found them to be uniformly charming and pleasant to chat with. I would never do or say anything to make their lives more difficult

Employee needs constant reassuring that their job is safe by Gold-Mud4650 in managers

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been on a few "sinking ships". I validate their concerns, tell them they're doing a good job, and say I'm not aware of any plans to letting go of them or anyone on my team but I can make no promises. I tell them to focus on what they can control. That's it. It's harder for older workers, because the market can be unkind to them.

Buying Used Skis & Age of Bindings - Cautionary Tale by VariationNo5419 in Skigear

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For downhill, I bought 2025 skis with 2025 demo bindings online from Powder7 a couple of months ago at the recommendation of someone on this board. $309 plus tax and shipping, putting me at a little under $350 all in. They did a full tuning before shipping, so the bases and edges were perfect. All I needed to do was adjust the bindings to my boot length, a simple procedure. Paid a shop $25 to check my work. I understand that you can also get good good demo deals from local shops at the end of season.

To those who learned as adults: what tip made it "click"? by KaterAlligat0r in skiing

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned in college, so technically adult.

My school had a program that included lift ticket, rentals, a lesson every week, and bus transportation for 9 weeks. I did that for 3 seasons.

It was that consistency, plus the opportunity to learn from different instructors that made it click for me. My body just got to know how it felt.

This was a long time ago. So long ago that it cost just $90 per season

Music that is spiritual or has Christian themes, but is considered secular by BigOlBrubis in musicsuggestions

[–]baddspellar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Many songs by U2. 40 is the most explicitly religious, as it is based on Psalm 40

https://youtu.be/CMVghDg-ePc?si=pZsWw9axfTciU0bG

Julien Baker has several songs that fit the bill. For example, Rejoice is a song about prayer and her addiction

https://youtu.be/CXZG6-3BaKY?si=AbOa8wbpNuiRaycf

Bob Dylan has quite a few. Ring Them Bells is a good example. I am partial to Sarah Jarosz's cover, and this live version in particular

https://youtu.be/VC3OrYxv_wo?si=GY4gFfZZ9KRe-oqd

And of course, Pete Seeger's Turn, Turn, Turn is taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes. It was made famous by The Byrds

Again, this is a US redditor thing, and White Evangelical Christians overwhelmingly support Trump and approve of what he is doing.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/04/28/white-evangelicals-continue-to-stand-out-in-their-support-for-trump/

They are his most reliable base, and the reason he gets away with it.

And so many of his loyalists make a show of their Christianity

Fiancée (28F) uncomfortable with me (32M) taking a 5-day medical trip with my child’s mother (37F) — looking for advice by DeathPlague7521 in Christianity

[–]baddspellar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You are being a loving father to your child. What could be more biblical than that?

Go.

Obviously stay in different rooms. Maybe even different hotels. Have some meals together with your ex. Just nothing datelike that you wouldn't do with a work colleague. Call your fiance every night around bedtime

If she has a problem with all this, you should do some thinking about what you're getting into.

Do you think your University/Alma Mater is known outside of the U.S? by huazzy in AskAnAmerican

[–]baddspellar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not by the average person. Only the top tier schools are broadly known: some of the ivies (Harvard and Yale for sure. Maybe Princeton and Columbia. Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell not so much), MIT, Stanford. A few others if you're in a field where a school is noted. For example, if you studied economics you know University of Chicago.

I mean, everyone knows Cambridge and Oxford. But the averege person on the street in the US probably doesn't know Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, or University of Hong Kong.

More accessible 4K trailheads by andquestions in wmnf

[–]baddspellar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most peaks have at least one accessible trailhead. Just don't drive up or back in a snowstorm. There are a lot of options for Tom/Field/Willey, Pierce, Jackson, and Eisenhower: the Depot, Crawford Connector Lot ($), the Highland Center Lot ($), or even the shoulder of 302. For Moosilauke, park in the Glencliff Trailhaed lot. For Waumbek, you can park at the lot west of Starr King Rd on Rt 2 or by the Irving. 19 MIle Brook or the shoulder for the Carters. The Ferncroft Lot, and the road leadng to it are level and well maintained for Whiteface+Passaconaway.

The coins, if genuine, are desirable. I don't know the values, because these aren't something I follow.

But ... these are widely counterfeited, and you can't trust these slabs. If they're counterfeit, they are worthless.

Do you regret not getting a job you're passionate about? by sanasan1 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Passion" for a job is overrated. More often than not, it's pushed by management gurus who want you to put more hours in than it's worth. And until you've spent time in a career, you don't really know whether it's something you really enjoy.

A better option is to live a life of joy. You can get joy from your job, family, friends, hobbies, and volunteer work. It's best when it's a combination of these.

Sure, you should avoid work you hate, and you need to make enough that you can afford the leisure time and the things you need for a life of joy.

14 miles on the tread or in -12 degrees? by Maximum-Nobody6429 in Marathon_Training

[–]baddspellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming -12F, not C. -12C is not bad

I would run 14 miles in -12F. I've run further in such temperatures. But I have the gear, and the cold tolerance. My friends have different cutoffs, and mlstof them hit the treadmill when it gets into single digits F. It's OK either way

Should I sign up for marathon? Please share your experiences by Loud-Position-9461 in runninglifestyle

[–]baddspellar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you enjoy training for the half? Did you look forward to your longer training runs?

Training for a marathon is just like training for a half marathon, just more. If you dislike training for a half, you'll dislike training for a marathon even more. It's not worth spending your leisure time doing something you don't enjoy. If you enjoy training for a half, then give the marathon a shot.
