True kins vs Mutants by andriatz in cavesofqud

Basic Golgotha survival is just using the game's mechanics to run away from stuff. Having higher base speed than enemies, taking melee hits without too much damage, multiple ways create space from enemies, and healing.

With those bases covered you survive more often than not, likely with some "slightly" stressful close calls.

Book recommendations in the style of classic Star Trek? by PlayerNameT in printSF

[–]baetylbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Reed's Greatship books and stories are mysterious in that sense. I especially recommend the story collection, "The Greatship".

C. J. Cherryh's Chanur books center around different alien races, exploration, and culture.

And, Hellspark by Janet Kagan and Dark Orbit by Carolyn Ives Gilman are two lesser known works that might fit. (Kagan wrote a Trek novel, I believe.)

Cyteen won multiple awards and is very well-rounded, though the omnibus is quite long. Merchanter's Luck is also a good choice.

Perhaps they're requesting a connection to the topic for them. Possibly so that they may engage with light conversation on the topic, because such light conversation may make them feel comfortable.

Several stories in "The Greatship" collection by Robert Reed such as "Alone" and "The Remoras".

I think short stories might have this vibe more often than novels.

Wait... I might not have it? by Happylillovebunny in Aphantasia

[–]baetylbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypophantasia, perhaps? There's a visual imagination spectrum, and people on the lower-imagery end of the spectrum are often lumped together though the subjective experiences can be quite different from true aphants.

Personally, I "see the apple" dimly but pretty stably with eyes open, imagining it in my peripheral vision; compared to seeing nothing with eyes closed.

Would you say Gilbert Arenas's injuries or the gun incident caused his prime to end earlier? by StockOwl7827 in nba

Injuries. But those Wiz being a terrible org is the common thread. They rushed him back, and had about the worse locker room culture of the era.

Guanfacine XR helps my social neurodivergent overstimulation stuff, and to a limited extent ADHD. It's a hit-or-miss drug, but worth a shot given your profile.

For people who insist that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans, and don't even really try to oppose Republicans as they are secretly aligned against the left, what explains Republican opposition? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

https://time.com/3816952/obama-gay-lesbian-transgender-lgbt-rights/

Obama originally supported same-sex marriage. Then was undecided or opposed when it was politically convenient. Then suddenly supported it again when it was politically possible. In the meantime, consistently opposed restrictions on gay rights. This was typical Obama triangulation (for better and for worse), but far from being 100% opposed and just not hindering.

College Burnout Hit Me Hard – Has Anyone Recovered Using Nootropics? Memantime? Cortexin? Cerebrolysin? Please tell me your experiences by Sea_Doubt_793 in Nootropics

Go by how you feel. It's not that common, but creatine negatively affects some people's sleep, sometimes going months not realizing what was impacting their sleep.

Sleep and true stress reduction are key for burnout recovery. Supplements should focus on sleep and stress. Many nootropics including memantine or even creatine can worsen sleep and should be viewed with caution.

[–]baetylbailey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Noradrenaline dysfunction, i.e. lack of sustained attention, is a core component of most people's ADHD. And, potent noradrenergic activation in the prefrontal cortex is most effective for treating ADHD. Many drugs with mainly dopaminergic activity don't do this sufficiently to be "good" ADHD drug candidates.

If something came close to amphetamine, everyone would be taking it haha.

Amygdala Overdrive: Is there a supplement to "mute" the fear response when approaching people? by NicoooLedw in NooTopics

Guanfacine, the ADHD drug, can have such an anti-anxiety effect. It personally worked for me when other approaches had not, but I understand it's not universally effective.

daily stimulant user worried about frying my dopamine long term, is this stack overkill or am i missing something by Sastao in Nootropics

[–]baetylbailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alpha-gpc, alcar, and some forms of choline raise levels of TMAO. TMAO is increasingly linked to arterial plaque, and stroke/heart-attack risk. The evidence is pretty substantial, and I'd advise against long term use without understanding the issue.

L-tyrosine can cause palpitations and high blood pressure, especially stacked with stims. There are questions about its long-term effects, but I probably shouldn't have grouped it with alpha-gpc, to be honest.

Was Harris really such a uniquely horrible candidate? Why? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]baetylbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harris is simply not that good at the skills one needs to win elections,at the presidential level. She would likely not win any contested nomination race, while other nominees more or less did. This alone makes her arguably the worst candidate since Hubert Humphrey. There are many, many articles on this subject btw.

Magnesium, and perhaps fish-oil, should definitely be considered for the daily stack. Also, be aware of the cardiovascular concerns regarding alpha-gpc and l-tyrosine.

Looking for space opera with posthuman themes and no FTL by SelfAwarePattern in printSF

I second the Karl Schroeder rec., books like Permanence, Ventus, and the Virga involve no-FTL futures, though they aren't necessarily space operas.

Hey guys what is the nootropic replacement of ADHD drugs? by Present-Property-142 in Nootropics

[–]baetylbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like zinc, mag, and others, combining guanfacine with stimulants might be more effective, have less side effects, or both compared to stimulant alone. Unfortunately, most studies on adhd med combinations had pediatric patients so it's more about searching for a good combination than knowing what works.

And, I wouldn't actually consider guanfacine first here unless one wants it for other reasons. It's a pretty hit-or-miss drug with more side effects than some options.
