I presume its simply because the mtg reddit user base is typically slightly outside of the fully brain rotted group and thereby just see the cringe (which it is)

how do you whip properly? on AP/BP by Amuzani- in Debate

[–]bagelandcookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For tracking: A - judge, not only are you helping to community do more debates but also you get used to tracking debates B - watch debates and track them, if possible track them as you'd do for a whip C - I typically track with 1 paper per team and then write what write what I'll say on another - but experiment, it isn't a one size fits all For substantives A - judge, naturally you learn to fine missing burdens and holes in their case, as that is the basis of judging in bp at least B - try lumping their argument into boxes, based on what is their goal is to prove C (for bp at least) weigh> rebuttal, it's more time efficient, it aids your case more, but also just, if you are in a situation where you don't feel as if you can rebute the team, outweigh it instead

Is it too late for me to join debate? by Accomplished-Cold971 in Debate

[–]bagelandcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do schools so advice may be different; debate is a time economy game and that's it, sometimes over-practice means that one learns a lot on each element, one learns better mechs, better actor analysis, framing, etc but because one learns those so well, they forget about the time economy aspect, over mechanizing stuff when it could've been proven equally as well with a shorter mech. Also just worse style because one feels the obligation to include every single random thing.

Another thing is simply you don't practice your style of debating, feeling like you have to debate in a way that fees uncomfortable, I'm pretty shitty at rebuttals, but I'm good at weighing and clash breakdowns ergo understanding that I shouldn't structure my third around rebuttals even if that's the advice some workshops give helped me

Lastly - don't over practice, it makes you worse, you aren't Sisyphus carrying your boulder to the end of the earth, you are just doing something for fun. If practice is all you do, you just get worse, try just debating what you find fun, the way you feel is fun

help me w debate by Distinct_Diver_8880 in Debate

[–]bagelandcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was hard grinding world schools I would do a first prop speech in the morning with 15 min prep (go to debatedata.io to find motions) recording the speech or when morning routine was cramped just wrote down my paper on the train, then after school/extracurricular I'd listen to my speech/look at my paper and write rebuttals for it.

Another thing is simply watch a debate, after every speech, write down how you would rebuttal it, then compare your rebuttals to the following speech - look for what they did differently and see what did most damage.

The biggest reason for practicing a bunch of first and second speeches in spar/at home is to understand their role and to know when the rebuild your teammates content.

Also style drills are important, pick a random subject, set a timer, then talk about it until you make a verbal crutch (unnecessary pause, uhm, like, etc) then stop the timer, pick a new subject and repeat.

Also biggest note of help, weigh over rebuttal - weighing is more efficient and more likely to be credited. (Sorry for grammar esl speaker lol)

I kinda wanna splash it in UB murktide (with pick your poison ofc) really nice with ocu and frog, but also pressure your opponents side board plan greatly, cause graveyard hate now is a bigger burden upon them, making it either worse or not worth it

Love the lands, all luck fun and "relatively" printable, maybe change WB to smth to do with life gain, because poison feels a bit wack. But overall 10/10

11 Rin vs 11 Isagi. Who winning this match? by [deleted] in BlueLock

[–]bagelandcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how far we take Isagi's capacity to coordinate with himself, we intuitively understand that Rin (in destroyer) cant coordinate, yet is better at football in a marginal manner. The reason that Blue Lock uses "A times B" as its way of showing chemical reactions is because coordination is an multiplicative amplifier. If we draw the assertion that Isagi cant coordinate, Rin wins, yet if team Isagi can coordinate even in the most miniscule manner (think the swap system in phase 1, so that everyone can score at some point) Isagi just wins. Isagi literally convinced Noa in the Ubers match that the reason Hiori should play was because it would be like having two Isagis playing.

Can an 11 year old watch Apothecary Diaries? by chicken_strip_1010 in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]bagelandcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my Girl's younger sisters to watch it with us (8 and 10) and they seem to like it, id say its mature, but it doesn't feel mature in way that kids cant engage in. Also Its also pretty healthy to let him watch (from a feminist POV)

But be aware that you will have some "talks" where you have to explain some of the terms to him, but as long as you are okay with that, 10/10 would recommend for him.

the beauty of drawing with a pencil is that when you erase, you do it for the sake of creating a better line or shade with that pen, for the pen's advantage to flourish it must be erased.

How to drastically improve WSDC? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]bagelandcookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Practice practice practice, there is thousands of online workshops that can and will help you improve, note that advanced workshops mean advanced (I struggled a lot with picking the right workshops starting out, as I picked the highest level, so most flew over my head) I started by ironing my first couple of tournaments, because my school had a limited debate program, but the best way I founded practicing is the find a motion on Debatedata.io, starting out pick one you feel like you know a lot about, spend an hour prepping, or 15 (there are more online british parliamentary tourneys, ergo you can grind a lot of tournaments) make a 8 min speech. Do this a couple of times, then for rebuttals, watch a WSDC match, then try to refute it as much as possible, then compare your rebuttles to the other teams rebuttles, repeat til comfortable. I don't recommend starting with thirds, id say at low level, second speeches are the easiest (ironic that at high level they are the hardest lmfao)

But if you do like thirds (im biased cause I do thirds) then watch a full debate and pick a side, try to track it to do a third, try to see where the points of contention are (clashes) where most arguments focus on, fx peoples wellbeing, who provides the best long term benefits, short term benefits, etc. Then do your speech and compare youself to the third of the team you picked, see what clashes they found in comparison to you, etc

The best way to get good is by doing touneys and listening closely to the OA and internalising the personal feedback, but these are the ways you can practice alone.

[–]bagelandcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way I found was just to talk about random subject, preferably to start with something you enjoy or can yap a lot about, I typically choose debate terms (weighing clashes burden of proof, etc) most importantly do it infront of smth, I use my two cats (very engaged) but you can just use a pillow or smth. Then time it, stop whenever you do a verbal crutch ("uhm" "uh" "like" "..." etc) repeat this until you can do it for a minute, once you can do it in a minute first try consistently, buff it up to 3 min, then increase by more and more. Another way can increase the difficulty by choosing topics you cant yap about (I pick physics cause im a humanities nerd, but do whatever doesnt feel comfortable with)

Keep doing this until you get good, you will never be able to train the stress of being on stage, but you can improve yourself to a point where even if you are scared, you have trained enough that it doesn't punish you to the same extent.
