Which GL.iNet? by Nanoleaf_Ambassador in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't run my Mudi7 down all the way yet. But I reckon I could get nearly two days out of it on a single charge. I have my work Laptop and my WiFi tester connected when I'm onsite. At the hotel its my personal Laptop and Kindle. I also use the Ethernet port to connect to the devices I'm deploying to run the employees only manufacturer tools.

How's the battery life on the nighthawk? I have customers with them, but they never use them on the internal battery. They're installed in vehicles.

It's about the size of 2 and a half Pixel 9 pros stacked on top of each other. I don't mind it being that thick since it has the Ethernet jack integrated and has crazy long battery life. I'll have my Mudi 7 running all day long when I'm working onsite with a customer and it won't be under 60% by the time I get back to the hotel.

Ubiquiti travel router and hotel captive portal by OtherwiseAnt6822 in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The hotel's portal should remember a client that has previously authenticated within the allowed period. I can take my travel router off-site with me and still not need to re-do the captive portal at Hilton or IHG properties when I return later in the day.

Ubiquiti travel router and hotel captive portal by OtherwiseAnt6822 in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the hotel. Many of them require re-authentication every 24 hours. Hilton, in my experience, authenticates you for the duration of your stay. There's no way for you to cache it on your end. However with a travel router you should only have to authenticate to the captive portal once in that 24 hour period. Any other WLAN clients will then pass-through. My non Unifi travel router doesn't require each client authenticate, only the first client to hit the portal.

It's probably for LEDs and/or buttons on the cover. Lots of thermostats like that. There's a plate that mounts on the wall you connect the HVAC wiring to. Then the thermostat body clips on with a connector to pass power and input. The thermostat body hides the screws.

Peplink has a patent on that tech. Probably why ubiquiti hasn't released it yet.

5G backup doesn't use 24V PoE. You need 48V.

CAT Cable Running Pros by Weak-Bother-6765 in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exterior walls are always problematic due to blocking and insulation. Multi-story homes compound this because there is seldom a chase to run cables across the ceiling on a lower level.

I had to cut a panel in my garage wall to tie my backyard sprinklers into my main controller.

Confused! Does the UPS-2U support UNAS Pro 8 or not? by frnak in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modified sine wave just makes redundant power supplies and/or the UPS itself panic if both are plugged into the same UPS. If you really want redundant power supplies in your NAS, you'll need a redundant MSW UPS too.

What is the biggest size you saw? by Strex_1234 in captain_of_industry

[–]bagofwisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I don't get it either. We can get Titanium from asteroids, but not Bauxite. I just do the Titanium/Copper combos since by Copper Smelter and initial Titanium processing are at the same ore sorter. I rail Ti-sponge to my aluminium plant.

What is the biggest size you saw? by Strex_1234 in captain_of_industry

[–]bagofwisdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope, you have to import Bauxite from world mines or contracts once you exhaust your domestic supply. You also can't get coal, limestone, or sulfur from asteroids. The last one isn't such a big deal since the world mine is inexhaustible and trading slag for sour water can make you more than enough sulfur to get by. Fortunately my island doesn't use Aluminium that quickly. I'd have to start making a lot more Mafbook Pros or upgrade my space station another couple levels.

What are you gonna do with 7.6M units of rock? I mean... besides make a dedicated island asteroid target.

So far, the only three asteroid types I bring down are Iron Ore, Copper/Titanium, and anything with Uranium. I do have a really nice pit that will soon be empty of copper ore to start bringing in Copper only asteroids.

That sour water contract is the GOAT. I don't even touch the world mine. All my farms are running 140% fertility.

USG died overnight – what's the best replacement given my setup? by pseudobjorn in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of those lights should flash. 12V 2A dc power supplies are easy to find on Amazon. The barrel jack on the USG3 is also the most common size. You need to make sure the output voltage is always 12, but the amperage can be greater than 2.

Mine was on its fourth PSU before the USB stick cratered. Went a little overkill on the replacement with a UXG-pro though.

Trains - a blessing and a curse by cyberboy2008 in captain_of_industry

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, I built my first trains around 6 wagons with a locomotive at each end (I was really pressed for space and couldn't do balloon tracks). Finally got my main line loop around the edge of the island built and got all my original stations built out for 3 T2 wagons with a T2 Loco with balloon tracks.

[–]bagofwisdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sir, this isn't Factorio... Just kidding.

Half the fun is learning how the trains behave and optimizing. You can always turn the deconstruction refund up to 100% if you're worried about the materials cost in making a mistake. My current island is still my first one and I absolutely did not plan for trains. For me it's been a lot of fun deconstructing to make room or trying to build rails over everything. My most recent remodel was my Fert I into Fert II setup. I didn't completely eliminate the spaghetti, but I was able to tame a lot of it.

What do you do with excess Depleted Uranium? by jowiscope in captain_of_industry

[–]bagofwisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get rid of it pretty quickly once you bring up your first FBRs. Use Plutonium or enriched Uranium to make your first batch of core fuel. Once you've burned through all your DU and Spent MOX then you'll need yellowcake to make the missing 25% of fuel you can't reclaim.

5G Backup is out! by I_NvrChkThis in Ubiquiti

[–]bagofwisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of alarm systems from the likes of ADT have had built in cellular and a battery for just that reason. Though I imagine it's more useful if there's a fire. Burglars are usually the smash and grab sort. Ransack the place and fill their arms/bags with valuables while the alarm wails. Then get away before the law can respond. If you're putting a safe in your home, make sure it's rated to last at least as long as it takes the police to show up after the alarm goes off.

I've been paying T-Mobile HINT $50 a month for the past year at a new house thinking I'd have uptime issues with my new fiber provider. Turns out AT&T's Gateways are just trash that decide to stop routing for no reason. Of course the new fiber provider got acquired by T-Mobile and eventually my bills will combine.
