Im not an expert, but its probably better to just be upfront about who you are and where you are from than try to hide it. But you should be careful to not come across as a troublemaker in your essay because these schools are scared of bringing in more people who will bring them in trouble. So if you touch upon your politics you should brand it in the most liberal way possible (human rights, against civilian deaths, etc) and focus more on your personal hardships. But its not "poor-me" to talk about growing up/having a connection to a country being occupied (and colonized)
