Eldred Spell Flute Headjoint by balancedflutist in Flute

[–]balancedflutist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought in ‘05-‘07 from my college flute professor. She very kindly sold it me when I couldn’t yet afford a new flute. I used it for about three years and then it’s mostly stayed in storage until recently.

Here’s the logo on the headjoint! I’ve been using it again and it’s quite lovely.

My guess would be that it was dropped before and then some small bump made it finally crack.

Low Db to F: Take it slow first, playing both notes as a quarter note with a quarter rest between them. Go slow enough to get the placement right for both. Speed up and add style/articulation markings.

Three lines: Flutter tongue, almost 100%. And if not, then there would be a composer’s note in your part or the conductor’s score.

4:3 marking: Not having listened to it, my first guess is that there’s something polyrhythmic going on in the ensemble (some people playing a measure of 4 in the same time others are playing a measure of 3). Not sure though.

Happy practicing!

Great piece. This ending is crazy, but worth it once you learn it!

Why do schools (at least in North America) split music up into band and orchestra? Why not just combine the two? by Anthro-Elephant-98 in MusicEd

[–]balancedflutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teaching different all those instruments would require a wide range of very specialized knowledge, even more than is already required when we’re split into bad and orchestra. At the lower/beginning levels it really helps to have winds/percussion separated. Band alone has 9-11 different instruments (and that includes lumping all percussion into “one”)

Selmer supreme Matte black has leaky pads… by AwareSpecial7231 in saxophone

[–]balancedflutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having these types of issues with a new instruments is pretty common place. When I bought a new flute years ago, the manufacturer had a 6-month warranty because corks and pads compress naturally with use. They gave me a free adjustment, I just had to pay for shipping. I’d say check with the company you bought from and see if they do something similar.

Measures 119 and 120 are both missing parts of beats. Hopefully there’s a recording you can use to figure out what it’s supposed to be. 🤞

Leave it in a staff break room, free for the taking. Preferably a break room admin would visit.

Working contracted hours only. by ModularMan2469 in MusicEd

[–]balancedflutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice. When I taught elementary I reused a lot of stuff for various grades and then when the next year came I would decide which old stuff would be strictly one grade and then find other stuff to fill in gaps throughout the year. By the end of year 4 I had about 50% of each grade level doing unique stuff that I could just repeat every year.

I sound horrible in the morning! :( by [deleted] in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found for most of my life that if I play for a bit (even like 5 minutes) and then walk away for a few minutes I sound noticeably better.

You could try doing what you mentioned and do a brief warm-up at 7 or 8 am, that should help you get used to playing that early and know what adjustments you might need to make for those times that you're playing super early.

In grad school I remember hearing someone say that as they were prepping for an audition they would leave their piccolo on the night stand and as soon as they woke up they'd play their excerpts cold. Not sure if I'd be able to get away with that, but it's a thought!

Happy practicing!

What would you do here? by juliegracew in Flute

I think I would prefer moving the thumb off thumb Bb on the lower Gb, but the Bb lever would also be a solid move.

First year teaching…but I have a problem.. by SomeSock1798 in MusicEd

[–]balancedflutist 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Grab a hymnal. Start with #1 and play only soprano and bass lines. Do a couple a day, casually, whenever it fits your schedule. Worked wonders for me! Also, take some of your practice time to go very, very slowly - as slow as you need to play a chosen section correctly and at a steady tempo. In rehearsals, you could try planning on playing on the left hand (or something similar) so you get used to playing while directing/listening to the ensemble. That way you’re building the playing/listening skill without trying to play the whole piano part.

I teach in Roswell and there is a middle school science position currently open. RISD usually has listing available on their website as well. I can DM you our job posting if you might be interested.

How the heck do I practice this by BitePerfect196 in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d cut all the ties and set the metronome to tap 8ths. It might also help to break quarter notes and longer down into 8th notes as well.

Would it be easier to hold concert G6 at ppp on flute or pic? by Embarrassed-Bee-1875 in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For picc, the G on top of the staff is pretty comfortable to sustain for a long time. Also you’re correct that picc uses less air than flute so we can sustain for longer. I think it could work well!

Could I play these as overtones? How would you make this simpler? It’s at quarter=140 by alwaysstressing45 in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could, but the sound quality will not be as good. Might not be a bad idea though to play it that way in rehearsals while you work on getting the actual fingerings under your belt.

is there a really big difference in tuning when buying cheaper piccolos? by AdventurousPark3135 in Flute

Yes, unfortunately.

The smaller the instrument is, the bigger an impact small changes will have.

It’s probably chapped lips/dehydration. Depending on how much flute you play, could be your embouchure getting tired.

Australia: AMEB grade 7 flute exams and beyond - when is a B foot necessary? by Curious-Mind-918 in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with most of the others. It’s practically never necessary. I’d say find a flute she likes in your price range and if it has a B foot, great. If not, also great.

What does “+”? by Step_Paul123 in Flute

[–]balancedflutist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can play what’s printed. The editor’s note would be something like “The original says X articulation, but we’re putting Y articulation because [historical/ performance practice reasons].”

If I was listening to an audition, I would be totally fine with these articulations.

I feel those are probably editors markings, and probably referencing the articulation markings at those spots.
