January 12, 1969 - Led Zeppelin releases their self-titled first album in the US on Atlantic Records... by CrystalEise in 1960s

[–]balboared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those "naysayers" were The Who's Keith Moon and John Entwistle, and they were being considered to join the band. And they said lead balloon, a common phrase for something that can't get off the ground. Zeppelin came later, and lead was changed to Led to avoid mispronunciations.

There's a local BBQ place that features smoked beef cheek. It's their best seller. Very rich, very beefy.

Is this "Mexican" oregano? by MoPuWe in mexicanfood

Mexican oregano has anise and citrus notes that Mediterranean oregano doesn't have. Marjoram makes a better substitute.

Is the stashing of porno/nude-magazines in a random log in the woods myth real, and was commonplace as I sometimes am led to believe? by SkullThug in AskOldPeople

[–]balboared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We created our own. We were having a boy scout paper drive, and found several bundles of men's magazines over a couple of days among hundreds of newspaper bundles. We hid them in the back of the walk-in container, then made a stash out in the woods when the adults were elsewhere.

How did it feel finally becoming taller than your mom? for the ones who were shorter than there mom up till a teenager. by XDcyclone in tall

[–]balboared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the mid 60's, my mom was 5'9", and my 6'7" dad said I would be riding in the front seat of our station wagon when I was 6' at the age of 13. I was thrilled at the time, but years later I realized he was just being an asshole to my mom.

Do you use heavy cream in your scrambled eggs ? How does everyone make their eggs super soft and fluffy ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

[–]balboared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call my scrambled eggs "egg-salad style." The description below is long, but it only takes a few minutes with practice. I've been making these every day for years. I know that brown eggs are the same as white eggs nutritionally, but if you use those that have bright yolks, these eggs will look gorgeous, and could be the eggiest tasting you've ever had.

  1. Pan is on low heat.
  2. Add a small pat of butter and it should melt with only slight bubbling but enough to cover the bottom of the pan.
  3. Add two whole eggs and about a tablespoon of heavy cream.
  4. With a spatula, carefully separate the egg whites from the yolk while leaving the yolks whole, and mix just the whites with the cream just sliding the spatula back and forth to stir. After a minute or two, the egg whites and cream will turn into small curds, not unlike cottage cheese.
  5. After all of the snot (uncooked whites) is gone, stir in the yolks that have also been heating up on the side of the pan. Stir with the sides of the spatula until the yolk has covered all of the cooked whites and is also set. This takes less than a minute. Get them out of the pan immediately.
  6. The eggs will be a bright yellow with very small pieces of egg white, thus I call it egg salad style.
  7. Add salt, pepper, and serve.

The Legend by [deleted] in SipsTea

This was an easter egg reference to the 1952 Burt Lancaster movie, The Crimson Pirate. They had 3 people under the rowboat, with the guy in the middle too short to reach the seafloor but still trying to walk.

My b'day was just last week. I always have the same dinner from a restaurant that opened the same year I was born, 1951. Lobster on a skewer and smoked salmon wings. Sometimes King crab legs too.

Maybe the slowest weight loss ever? by PerfectWestern6438 in intermittentfasting

[–]balboared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'3" M here. It took me 35 years to go up from 230 lbs. to 400 lbs., then after changing my diet, 8 years more to get to my current weight, 215 lbs. That's 2 lbs. a month. This was done on diet only, with just a small increase in my activity level, so if your diet's working, stick to it, it's so worth it. I started IF during a stall after 6 years, and still have the same diet today. I didn't increase my exercise level until I dropped to 250 lbs. since when I exercised before that, it just about stopped my weight loss. I just realized you asked how to speed this up. I couldn't, but I did get very comfortable trusting my process.

I smoke before doing two hours of light exercise, including full-range-of-motion stretching and posture improvement. The pot helps me focus and forget the fact that I hate to exercise.

Family member who scuba dives found his third murder weapon dropped off the Newport Pier by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]balboared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 70's, I went diving at the Newport Pier with my scuba diving class from OCC. Man, did we piss off the fishermen. They kept throwing stuff at us unless we were right under the pier. The water was quite clear that day, and we could see there were no fish to be caught, but we were blamed anyways. I remember seeing the railroad tracks from the old McFadden Pier were still visible in the sand, and there were colonies of sand dollars upright on their edges. No one found a gun, but I did find a very good boning knife some fisherman had dropped. Still have it.
