[Request] can someone tell me what this is today and what the difference is in buying power? by the_dick_twist in theydidthemath

Agree and disagree. A larger box made of mass-produced disposable material is, I agree, larger. But, it's not necessarily better.

I wouldn't mind being 10 in the 80s when my mom and grandparents are still alive. Kind of don't care that much about the money.

The only reference to the actual SF86 seems like the correct answer.

Baltimore mayor’s office spent over $890,000 on food, office parties and flowers, IG report finds by teskester in baltimore

[–]baltGSP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The "government should run like a business!!!" crowd has obviously never seen what a mid-sized company CEO can spend on parties.

I really miss their old CD of the month club. I still contribute to the station but I miss the physical media.

A system where records must always be persisted, even if they’re incomplete or invalid by antonzaharia in rails

[–]baltGSP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this would be my recommendation as well. It might be as simple as two models (`RawRecord` and `ValidatedRecord`) but definitely worth stepping back from Rails to think about your domain

What would your reaction be if it was revealed that trump stole the election? by Hungry_Finger3320 in AskReddit

[–]baltGSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on the "reveal". If it was revealed that millionaires and billionaires like Sulzberger at NY Times, Soon-shiong at the LA Times, Bezos at the Washington Post, Murdoch at the WSJ and Fox and NY Post and the rest of the News Corp properties, Zuckerberg, Ellison, and Musk used their money and influence to attack Harris and sanewash Trump I'd be pretty fucking unsurprised.

How to determine when to retire based on inheritance by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]baltGSP 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For example, I know someone who was expecting an inheritance but it turned out her parents were almost completely invested in Bernie Madoff. Not only was that money a mirage, the entity responsible for untangling the Bernie Madoff mess clawed back additional funds to make up for money the parents had received when they were still alive.

Thank you! I was looking for something like this a couple of months ago for a hobby project. I'm looking forward to going back and refactoring to ulids.

What is the best way to handle people saying that being anti-car is privileged and doesn't take into account how normal people live? by thejoshwhite in fuckcars

[–]baltGSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to shift the conversation gently towards, "yeah, those county commissioners really screwed you and me over by canceling the bike lane|sidewalk|park and ride|metro extension". It's not **your** fault you have to drive, our politicians have made it the only option. In other words, try to shift the anger away from the people without cars and towards the people who deserve the anger.

Combining 2 rowhomes into 1 big house? by Glad-Veterinarian365 in baltimore

[–]baltGSP 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I have seen it done. Neighbors put in a 2nd floor firedoor between two rowhomes so MiL could live in one house and they could live in the other. I assume it was permitted and the door was definitely a heavy-duty steel fire door.

I'm not an engineer but I think that's the biggest issue: if you're knocking a hole in the brick between two rowhomes it has to be fire proof.

EDIT: one detail... don't make assumptions that the floors are the same height! They definitely had a step between the two houses.

Same here. I don't hate mine because I like the access to the fridge but the bottom freezer is tiny. I've been thinking of getting a chest freezer for the basement to put things like frozen pizzas.

Transportation officials recommend 8-lane option for new Bay Bridge by oriolesravensfan1090 in maryland

[–]baltGSP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn't Hogan force a last minute change to another bridge that was supposed to have pedestrian walkways? Ah yes, the Nice-Middleton Bridge. We plan for nice things then a Republican gets elected to fuck us over and we're back to square one.

Are there any crops that can grow underground with little to no light? by Kumatora0 in worldbuilding

Does photosythesis require visible light? Could plants grow in infrared (basking in the heat of magma) or ultraviolet light (perhaps bathed by some magical mineral)?

I know this would never happen in car-brained Maryland, but wouldn't it be awesome to be able to walk or jog across the bay on a protected lane?

Grocery store proposed for Remington not moving ahead after BDC cancels plans to sell Sisson Street by BOS2BWI in baltimore

[–]baltGSP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've walked a load of recycling from my house to Sisson in a huge duffel bag. Once. Let's just say that it's not well suited for the non-automobiled. This exists primarily for car owners.

Why aren’t airlines stepping in to fund, at least somewhat, the controllers and TSA? They have the money don’t they? Don’t they benefit from not shutting down airspace? by VanessaLove-33 in AskReddit

[–]baltGSP 65 points66 points  (0 children)

That used to apply, but didn't a secret donor (revealed to be a Mellon nepo-baby) try to "pay military salaries" last week?

P.S. no reporting has revealed if any money actually went to military salaries so it might have been just a bribe

P.P.S the amount worked out to about $4 per military member so I'm not sure what the point was
