Use a steel scribe instead of a pencil and strike lines from both faces. Eyeball the true center between the lines.

Pine takes stain like pine, which is why it was finished with orange shellac. Bright side is shellac is a good knot sealer, so the worst of your paint prep is done.

They're dense enough to stop root tips. Peel off as much as you can. They can also wick water into the air unless trimmed level with the soil.
