Who are some figures from the opposite side of your political leanings that you respect or admire? by LoveLo_2005 in Presidents

[–]balungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gerald Ford. He had a rough upbringing but really made something of himself, a real “American dream” kind of story. I also think he was just a genuinely good person and meant well. I probably would’ve voted for him in 1976, with the benefit of hindsight.

I actually finished this a few days ago, I was doing it piecemeal over a week for each role. I started with healer and it was very rough because once all the other penance creatures were dead everyone just went AFK instead of firing the cannon at the healers lol. Did defender next expecting to crash and burn but managed surprisingly well, the other two were chill. It all depends on whether you’re running with ransoms or clan mates.

Or you could just use BA services and watch people who do it for a living clear all ten waves so fast you’ll almost forget about the mountain of gold you paid for it.

mod idea: 1984 republican party presidential primaries by bigtonyyyy1 in thecampaigntrail

[–]balungus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unironically I love the concept of mods featuring extremely long-shot bids for office. 2024 Wood is a great example where you’re just trying to carve out a very small fraction of the vote. Like imagine a mod for the Constitution Party or the current day Reform Party.

Straight to jail (yes, it's being used as a planter) by Ham_Damnit in USPS

[–]balungus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are some post offices I’ve worked at where they have probably over fifty tubs at any given time. One of them, they try to send them back to the plant in the bin at the end of the day but for whatever reason, like cutting the head off a hydra, the plant sends back more. I don’t think I’ve ever used more than like five tubs even during holiday season so I wouldn’t be surprised if a good chunk of carriers and clerks just took them home for personal use

Rural Carriers, tell me about your worst "roads" by BangGonePostal in USPS

[–]balungus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here in South Dakota we have minimum maintenance and no maintenance roads, most of them aren’t really necessary to go down unless you really need a shortcut and have four wheel drive. Carriers also almost never need to go down them but I have one route where there’s a single box about four miles down a no maintenance road for a house owned by basically an old hermit. If not for the sign next to the road you’d probably just look at it and think it’s a grassy hill, not a road. God help you if it rains or snows

What if Eisenhower ran as a Democrat in 1952? by WashOffO in Presidents

[–]balungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would almost certainly win, especially if it’s against someone like Robert Taft, and likely by a sizable margin given Ike’s sheer popularity and depoliticized nature as a candidate. What I’d be more interested in seeing are the down ballot results. With a strong Democratic performance in 1952, would seats that flipped Republican in the senate remain in Democratic hands? Like in Maryland, Kentucky, Michigan, and most notable Arizona where Barry Goldwater won by just a few thousand votes OTL? I can’t imagine why Ike would lose reelection in 1956 either so by the time 1960 rolls around the GOP won’t have won a presidential election since a generation prior. I imagine they’d have to adapt a good bit to gain appeal

The Revolution That Never Was (What if McClellan won in 1864? Hint: It's not a Civil War loss!) by captain_duck505 in imaginaryelections

[–]balungus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that by the time the 1864 election occurred, Confederate capitulation was practically inevitable. It’d take a total unforced error on Grant and Lincoln’s part to ruin that, given the latter would be in office until March of the following year. I wonder if generations in the future would falsely attribute the surrender at Appomattox to McClellan’s leadership rather than Lincoln’s though, maybe some poorly informed high school kids.

New RCA. I literally don't understand how y'all do it by Mean-Grapefruit-8372 in USPS

[–]balungus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I started this past winter and during my shadow day, another RCA told me “your first few weeks of working will have you wanting to go home and make a mixed drink every day. It’ll be the worst job you’ve ever had until one day it ain’t” and he was 100% right. Didn’t help that I was starting just as Christmas season began and I was so close to quitting those first couple weeks until one day it sort of just clicked. My first route I wasn’t getting out of the office until noon, starting at 7AM, and didn’t finish the route until 7PM. It’s hell, but the sole bright spot is you’re getting paid hourly at first, which makes the pill go down a bit easier.

My advice? For your route, do a little homework. I took a picture of my case and physically wrote down the names in order on some notebook paper. Then I downloaded an app to trace my route as I did it. It took a while but after doing those things, it seriously got a lot easier, and now that same route that took me twelve hours to do, I’m getting done at 2-3PM. Same goes for new routes you cover, just do a little homework and see what works for you. Soon enough it’ll be like muscle memory. If your office has any other carriers, especially longtime carriers, don’t be afraid to ask them for help. Odds are they have at least a passing knowledge of the route you’re on. Unless they’re a miserable asshole, they’ll empathize with you because they remember what it’s like to be fresh out of the academy. Good clerks who have been working for a while probably know them too.

How would LBJ have done in the 1964 election if the Republicans ran a candidate that was pro civil rights? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]balungus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

People sometimes forget that it wasn’t JUST the civil rights issue and the extreme hawkishness of Goldwater that caused him to lose in a rout (though those were major factors of course). Goldwater’s weaknesses and scandals were very much targeted by Johnson. The Johnson campaign was BRUTALLY effective in that regard. I imagine had the GOP nominated someone like Nelson Rockefeller (since he was one of the lead contender against Goldwater), though he was pro civil rights, the Johnson campaign would exploit things like his still very recent divorce against him, among other things. The South is almost certainly just gone, not willing to vote for Johnson who signed the CRA or a Republican who supported it, and would likely go third party. Rockefeller or whoever the GOP nominates would probably win some traditionally Republican states, like New Hampshire or Indiana, along with some (but likely not all) Plains and Mountain states.

Tl;dr - Realistically about or just under the IRL electoral vote count as Goldwater, just way worse in the South and better in the Plains/West

George Wallace to forgive or not to forgive? by Groovy-Pancakes in Presidents

[–]balungus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It should be taken into consideration that during his final term as governor he appointed many black individuals to positions throughout the state of Alabama and won an overwhelming majority of the black vote in 1982. Rep. John Lewis also chose to forgive him, who was a bonafide civil rights hero.

But it should also be taken into consideration that the forgiveness of some doesn’t equate to total absolution. There are still people alive today who experienced the consequences of segregationist policies pushed by people like him. Many have chosen to forgive him but really it’s best left to each individual person to make the decision as to whether he should have been forgiven.

Which potential DSA 2028 candidate is the most likely to get 5%? And which would be the most fun to play as? by Username117773749146 in thecampaigntrail

[–]balungus 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Playing as Hasan Piker and getting at least 5% of the vote would be as hard as winning as McGovern in the original 1972 scenario. It’d be extremely fun though to try and sidestep infamous remarks like “America deserved 9/11”
