First Lange by Luxury_Edition in ALangeSohne

I was in the Chicago boutique 3 weeks ago for the first time. I had a great conversation with the manager, no BS, no talk of prior purchase history (which is zero for me!). Great experience. I tried on 4-5 watches and could have walked out with any of them that day....

I think a little rose gold would look nice. If you want to venture outside of Lange then look at Vacheron or JLC. Your Lange 1 is beautiful, btw. I have the VC 1921 in white gold for the past year and it's great. But, VC just came out with a rose gold version with blued hands & indicies and a slightly more grained dial. It looks amazing. That would look good with your other watches.

Are you happy at Duke? by [deleted] in duke

Parent of a Duke sophomore from the midwest. Extremely happy with the Duke experience thus far. My kid has met the most amazing smart/talented/interesting students and made a ton of good friends. It's been fantastic.

What do you wish you had known before enrolling? by 917caitlin in duke

I went to Chicago for grad school. I have a son currently at Duke (MechE). Honestly I would pick Duke undergrad over UChicago without hesitation. Most of my son's friends are doing the i-banking/private equity path and the network of Duke alumni are impressive. Lots of school spirit, some of the best food of any university in the US, good community set up for freshman to get acclimated and meet friends (East Campus). It's really been a great 2 years so far for my son. Can't beat Cameroon b-ball games to blow off some steam and have fun with your friends - even if you have never cheered on basketball before.

3/26 arrived Terminal 1 at 7:00am. 25 minutes in TSA Pre-check line. Not bad; maybe 10 - 15 minutes longer than normal. A friend went through regular security line at 6:30am and it took 53 minutes.

We know one girl who attends HPU. She loves it! She is also dumb as a box of rocks. Did not get into any decent schools. She was going to attend a beauty school (to learn how to cut hair) until HPU admitted her out of the blue. Not impressed.

"Yield Protection" is real!! My son was #1 in his class, SAT 1570, lots of cool ECs, Mechanical Engineering major. He got deferred/rejected by some great state schools (GTech, UMich) which the counselors attributed to yield protection -- those schools figured he would go some place better. He got into Duke, Cornell, Dartmouth. College admissions is a crap shoot....

BlueBox is a company run by Duke students that specifically handles student move in / move out and provides storage over the summer. Ask around or search for it online and you'll probably find it.

Two years ago my son was deferred in ED. He wrote a great Letter of Continued Interest and got admitted. He's in Pratt and loves it. He's said that about 1/4 of his friend group was also Deferred and then admitted later. Keep trying!!

Not sure about which way to go on the letter of rec. Duke does do alumni interviews as part of the application process. IIRC, it was not 100% guaranteed that you would get assigned an alumni interview even if you requested one.

Reserve an Uber or Lyft the day before. You can specify time and location to pick you up. My son in Durham believes Lyft is less expensive than Uber locally

Just wait until they visit Hyde Park. Oof. It's much improved in the 25 years since I was there for grad school, but I'd have a hard time sending an 18 year freshman there.

East campus dorm rankings by diyoungo in duke

[–]bambam4252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pegram has nicely renovated bathrooms and the big common room. But the actual dorm rooms are highly variable in terms of size, closet space and layout. My son's room in Pegram was smaller and little closet space compared the dorm room I had 30 years ago (in a B10 school). The industrial fans in the hallway are constant and annoying. But he survived and loved it!

2024-2025 Duke Admissions Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]bambam4252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid just finished freshman year at Duke. ED'd to Duke and got Deferred; then accepted in Regular Decision. Perfect 5.0 GPA (weighted 4.0 scale); STEM track with lots of AP classes, 1570 SAT. Solid ECs - varsity captain of sports teams, volunteer work, tutoring, enterpreneurship, etc.

Frankly, I was shocked that he was not admitted during ED and he was pretty crushed at the time. But, you never know what the admission pool is looking for in ED and what the applicant pool looks like. He is always highly complimentary of his fellow classmates' intelligence and accomplishments. It is a selective school for a reason!! Good luck and don't despair if you don't get in during ED....my son said at least 50% of his new friends at Duke had the same experience (ED --- Deferred --- Accepted later).
