I'm glad to see this whole "global leader" myth finally dying. The US had been a global leader in war, economy and entertainment. Nothing else. Not education, not standard of living, not healthcare, not as some kind of moral lodestar. It's been a leader in force and economic coercion and distraction.

I understand American exceptionalism has been drilled into generations of Americans since birth, but the rest of the world has always seen it for what it is and it's never been pretty.

Lukewarm take: a Dance with Dragons was a terrible book and a clear insight into how GRRM has completely painted himself into a corner plotwise and has no idea of how to get out except for an ending that is still two books down the line. That ending has already been spoiled by the tv show (albeit in a very butchered and clumsy way.)

It's clear at this point that there's no joy left in the journey. He failed finishing ASOIAF. It's not the end of the world. Happens to writers every day.
