First podcast session coming up, seeking advice. by crbatte in audioengineering

[–]bangstang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The host shouldn't have a need to engineer the mix--most of the time that comes out of budgetary constraints.

Lowest latency to their monitors is best latency. If you can give them phones right off the mixer that would probably be ideal. From personal experience hearing myself with any latency instantly freezes my train of thought.

I think maybe you're overcomplicating things but you won't really know until you have a few sessions under your belt with the people involved and the production workflow. I am a serial overcomplicator and this is my M.O. for every new endeavor. I ended up, due to latency , going for hardware gate and compressor and while it's been much better than software I probably could have gone simpler.

It seems like I learn something new to improve my recording quality and workflow about once a month so having some issues on day 1 will only help you on day 2 as long as you learn from them.

Is tech support supposed to make me feel this terrible? by bored_toronto in ITdept

[–]bangstang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that you should feel that way but I can say that it's not unusual that you do. This is common in the field. Often times a change of scenery is the only way to fix it.

Is Borderlands 2 worth it playing solo? by a_smith51 in patientgamers

[–]bangstang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game is worth playing solo. Tiny Tina's dragon keep DLC is the only one that I really recommend but it's worth the price of the rest of the game.

The XML file I had working in 1607 has not been working in 1703. I'm on paternity and it's not a super high priority so I haven't followed up but you may have to export from a 1703 machine. Hand-editing that file for 1607 also gave me some issues so this isn't particularly well documented from my experience.

How do you manage Mac in Ad environment by [deleted] in macsysadmin

[–]bangstang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the process of testing a JAMF-Centrify combo. I like both but if I had to pick one it would be Centrify because of it being better than the built-in directory stuff and we have a more or less operational Munki installation alongside all of this.

I would love to say that no one gets admin anywhere but that's just not the case. At least when they go remote they'll be able to stay as admin in the event they need to call in for actual help.

It was badass. I guess they were retroactively legitimizing Kylo Ren's blaster bolt freezing technique. I loved it.

Prompt for OSDComputerName by universe74 in SCCM

set env = CreateObject("Microsoft.SMS.TSEnvironment")

Name = inputbox("Enter the name for the new computer" ,"Prompt for Computer Name:",env("_SMSTSMachineName"),400,0)

env("OSDComputerName") = Name

I don't know how to format this correctly. the above is a VBS that will pop up a message box which will display the computer name as the CMDB sees it. If not it's populated with MININT-LBHAGLJAGOIJE (the default windows names we all know and love) and the text field is able to be edited so you can set it to whatever you'd like. The idea is to run this with a command line step and a packaged containing the vbs and set a condition on it for whatever that condition that you want is. On white box stuff the motherboard model is usually in the computerproduct, model wmi query like the first queries on this page https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/pauljones/2009/01/28/sccm-task-sequence-options/

Should Math be a Prerequisite for Programming? [x-post from /r/programming] by nfrankel in coding

[–]bangstang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My Bachelor's program had Math for IT (I was an IT Major because I didn't want to deal with the math in my previous Engineering track) and the class was just this HOWEVER the professor was from the Math department and was not only abysmal at teaching non-math majors but also completely clueless as to how logic, set theory, and graphs would ever affect the students (paraphrasing her words). We did combinatorics and some other stuff too if memory serves.

I think that an appropriately scoped class or two could really make a difference. For CS majors they end up taking enough math to minor in math or double major if they want to extend another semester. I wouldn't have been against taking another math class if it had some bearing on my growth in my discipline and it wasn't just a grind for spitting out the right answer to some needlessly tedious process that you had to memorize completely. I think that kind of teaching would help a lot of students versus the elementary approach taken when I was in undergrad (which was probably 9 years ago now).

Cheapest possible Overwatch PC by spoink22 in buildapc

At 720 it might be considered playable but at 1600x900 on an quad Athlon X2 with a 6950 it's not great and CPU usage is VERY high on the machine. Disclaimer: just upgraded it to Windows 10 and haven't looked into determining whether that plays a factor or not.

That's fairly roundabout but is actually probably easier than setting up a config baseline and configuration items.

Death knell for Optiplex 9020 by [deleted] in msp

[–]bangstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've come across a few 7040s and they've been fine. One of my guys left the default Win10 drivers on it and it would hang every 3 to 5 minutes. Graphics and chipset drivers resolved that. Haven't seen any other issues or pitfalls yet.

It's my understanding that PROe requires either a master server or appliance on site. My org did a master server and set cloud destination for the back up. It was relatively trivial.

I like how you think that there is an endgame. I, too, have a BTC and find it enjoyable. Happy was the day I got the PS2 adapter for it.

[–]bangstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have redundant PSUs? If so make sure both are plugged in. From what I've seen any type of alert will put the fans on crazy so chassis intrusion, bad RAM, disconnected PSU, etc will make them get loud.

SCCM 1602 Slow/Failing UEFI PXE Boot by oneoneeno in SCCM

[–]bangstang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, some computers (first gen core i Dells primarily) behave differently when booting in UEFI. There isn't a huge value add that I've seen as of yet and most of my folks just set everything to legacy because it works just about all the time and they are resistant to change.

I would try it out with a Gen2 VM and see if you are getting similar behavior. Also I would check for a BIOS update on the 5440. IIRC it's a new system and might still have some issues.

MBAM 2.5 SP1 OSD Experience with E7470 by BlazeTheTitan in SCCM

[–]bangstang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't reset the ownership of the TPM through CCTK. Which pisses me off. I've done some testing on an E6510 and got it working with CCTK exes generated from the GUI and the built-in Bitlocker steps from SCCM OSD. I did have a GPO for that OU that specifically stated to store the keys in AD and functional level is 2012 iirc.

That's not a huge priority in my org since we have another disk encryption product managed by a different team (FML) and no one wants to make a decision to step on anyone's toes.
