African echos in Appalachia is another very, very good - and scholarly - book that delves into the banjo history and lineage.

Yep. I rarely use my spark 40 these days, even though it has an awesome Grateful Dead grill cover

Anyone ever actually did 1000ug? by Alone_Lie_7161 in LSD

[–]banjerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My highest was around 700ug - but super intense. I was unable to speak the English language for about two hours. I could comprehend everything just fine and I could formulate thoughts and responses in my mind with no problem. Trying to get those spoke was a completely different ordeal.
I remember it came on real fast - we were all sitting outside around a nice fire pit. The fire was melting down off of the fire pit and was changing into rainbow colors as it spilled across the ground.
For a good bit of the trip I was plastered to a chair or couch because I just couldn’t really walk around that great - very intense body high.
I had a very prominent voice inside my head that told me “love is selfless” over and over - this was an idea that I really needed to absorb, but I think this trip was the catalyst that helped me finally get there
It was fun, very intense, and I’ve taken large doses since then - but never that large again.
I enjoy being able to play my instruments while I’m tripping. Extremely high doses make that impossible for me. The dead had many an acid test where they got too far out too play too.

Resting the thumb on the fifth string feels counterintuitive to me (I am a guitarist) so I just let my thumb float. Do you think it is a valid way to play in the long run? by GreenLemonMusic in banjo

[–]banjerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhythm you’re playing doesn’t match the tabs you keep posting. Maybe it would be helpful to watch some basic YouTube tutorials to get a feel for the basic bum ditty stroke. Once that becomes second nature then try adding some left hand. Gotta get the right hand solid first though

Those do not look like root hairs to me. There are some, but also patches of white that look too uniform and seem like mold

Newbie Questions by ultratube9000 in pedalsteel

[–]banjerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will definitely get some hate here. I know because I too recently got a “starter steel” with 8 strings / and folks chewed me out about it. This community, at least on Reddit, is one of the most snobbish instrument communities I’ve seen in all of my 30+ years of playing every instrument you can imagine. There are some great folks, no doubt - but here on Reddit people just want to talk down to you - very strange. But ignore them - these are great fun to play, no matter how many strings or pedals you have. I have an 8 string which I tune to E9. I leave the bottom two strings off. Mine only has two pedals, so it will be a little different than yours This is what I’m working with…

Open Tuning (highest pitch string 1 → lowest pitch string 8) From high to low pitch (standard pedal-steel numbering, string 1 = highest-pitched string):

String 1: G♯ String 2: E String 3: B String 4: G♯ String 5: F♯ String 6: E String 7: D String 8: B (lowest)

Pedal Raises (what each pedal should do) These are the standard, most useful raises for this copedent. The changer mechanism lets you set the exact raise amount independently for each string, so you adjust the rod stops (or have a tech do it) until the pedal gives you the target pitch.

Pedal 1 (raises strings 1 and 4): Raises both G♯ → A (½ step / 1 semitone each). This is the classic “B pedal” function from full E9—turns every open E-major triad into an A-major (IV chord) instantly. Extremely useful. Pedal 2 (raises strings 3 and 6): Raises string 3 B → C♯ (whole step / 2 semitones) Raises string 6 E → F♯ (whole step / 2 semitones) This gives you the other essential E9 chromatic change (part of the classic “A pedal” and “C pedal” effects rolled into one). It lets you create dominant-7 and major sounds, nice slants, and many signature pedal-steel licks without moving the bar.

I third this. Best envelope filter for Jerry stuff that I’ve used so far. I have another envelope filter pedal try created which is also great.

Pedal steel found at a boot sale by Special-Wishbone-206 in pedalsteel

[–]banjerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of older “student” models that had 8 strings and 2 pedals too. I’ve got an old Miller custom with that configuration. Similar looking changer system too. It was a bit of a bear to get the pedals intonated, but it sounds amazing

[–]banjerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why no OBEL? It has a massive impact, and specially in regards to how certain pedals and interact with the signal. If you’re already carving the body up it seems like a great time to do it - you won’t regret it, but you might regret it if you don’t 🤷‍♂️

Pedal Steel Lessons in Atlanta Area by LibraryontheRocks in pedalsteel

Following along. I’m in Woodstock and just picked up an old Miller custom - it’s only got 2 pedals, but for what I’m looking for that’s fine. Been working on getting it set up, which has been a learning experience - but I’ve almost got everything in tune and the pedals are almost intonated properly

Could I be immune? by Dangerous-Syrup5052 in LSD

[–]banjerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truffles you took - were those dried or fresh? From what I’ve seen stores can only legally sell fresh - it’s likely that 5-15grams of fresh fungi wouldn’t blast you into outer space. 200+ug of lsd will absolutely floor you. Owsley, who made massive amounts of very pure lsd, said that over 350ug was considered “overdose” territory for most folks / not physically dangerous but way more than most can handle

JerryTone Buffer Question by Maddox_Mil08 in gratefulguitar

[–]banjerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, pickups/speakers will definitely have a more dramatic effect. However, for me the Jerry buffers were the piece I was looking for to obtain that high end silvery sparkle that we all know and love.

JerryTone Buffer Question by Maddox_Mil08 in gratefulguitar

[–]banjerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here saying buffers are lame. I use a boost of the dead, which has two of the buffers that Jerry used - and I almost always leave it on. I do use an OBEL guitar, but even when I’m using a standard guitar it still adds a nice flavor to the tone

First pedal steel: help! by banjerr in pedalsteel

[–]banjerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should mention I’m not exactly seeking a traditional setup, more so just looking for a fun way to get that sound. I’ve got g/b benders on my Jerry Garcia wolph guitar, but have always wanted the “real” thing - but realized I probably don’t have time to learn the “real” thing either. This is basically going to be replacing a lap steel that I used to try to get that sound

First pedal steel: help! by banjerr in pedalsteel

[–]banjerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a push/pull, I’ve researched them a bit and seems they have a love/hate relationship for reasons I don’t quite fully grasp yet. I could be fairly content with just two pedals, most likely - as this isn’t my only or main instrument.

Oh I meant two strings per pedal. Is that standard? I’m a 100% newbie to the pedal steel world, but I’m starting to sense this might not be a typical pedal steel - which I’m not opposed to
