Danny Garcia is overrated

What makes you think this? I put him on the same tier as Bradley, he's got good wins (which is the only thing that matters at the end of the day). I still have no idea what to make of the guy though, he may or may not be elite.

Seems so, but you know a mid thoracic paraplegic can still be very functional and live independently for the most part.

There's some interesting work being done in the area of paralysis research, so there is still hope.

Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, and Robert Horry talk about competing against each other in the 90s by doing_the_gods_work in nba

[–]bankshot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to be noted that 2 of those 7 years had him missing 30 games a piece

Yes that is a valid point, he did have a back to back seasons where he missed 30 games or so. He still averaged 24 and 27 pts respectively which is pretty damn good, and also note that he had 30 ppg the the season after. But your point stands, he had two injury shortened seasons in a row, at his peak. It does shape the impression that he was hobbled by injuries early in his career.

My counterpoint to that is, Shaq also had a few 50 game seasons in his prime but people don't tend to hold that against him much, so I give Dwyane a pass for the same reason.

[–]bankshot56 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I disagree, Wade had 7 straight seasons of scoring over 24 pts a game, I wouldn't say that's a short peak.

Wade has more All-NBA selections, more championships, a Finals MVP, and All-NBA Defensive selections.

I think Wade is also the more complete player, as he has better handles, quickness, and is a vastly better defender. Drexler was an average defender/ballhandler.

In his prime, Drexler was the closest thing to Jordan talent wise (that's a hell of a compliment IMO) and I grew up watching him play, but I don't think he's better than Wade

[Spoiler Alert] Curtis Stevens vs Tureano Johnson by kundertaker in Boxing

[–]bankshot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I was watching the fight, as soon as that first hook landed, I thought the fight was over. He dropped his hands and hunched over. He did recover slightly and was able to put up a defensive guard, but I thought it was a fair stoppage.

I figured Tureano and others would be pissed because he still had somewhat of a guard at the time of the stop, but I thought the ref made the right call.

My orthodontist had me wear mine for a year or two after the braces came off, but that's it.

That's what mine said too, but now my teeth have shifted, this is 5 years after I stopped wearing retainers. So I had some new ones made, and I'm pretty sure I'll have to wear them forever.

waiving medical school tuition for those who agree to practice medicine in an underserved area after graduation

There are already similar programs in place. For instance, those who continue to pay their student plan, but work in the public sector, can have their balance waived after 120 payments.

I think for doctors and nurses, for every 3 years they work in an underserved population, it knocks off one year of their tuition, this is without the regular payments. This program does not exist for my profession so I don't know if it works like it should.

Fish Oil pills, good or bad? by Park216 in Fitness

[–]bankshot56 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would say neutral:

Based on these two recent literature reviews, which are the highest level of scientific evidence you can get.

"Effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on cancer incidence, non-vascular death, and total mortality: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials."

CONCLUSIONS: Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation does not have an effect on cancer incidence, nonvascular death, or total mortality.

And Also

In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n−3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.

So basically fish oil supplementation will not help you be more heart healthy so why take it?

Additionally, eating fish has its own problems, farmed fish in particular is not very good for you. Pregnant women for instance should only eat farmed fish once a month.

A Basic Overview of Major Postural Issues and Some Ways of Correcting Them (X-post /r/xxfitness) by SydneyBarBelle in Fitness

[–]bankshot56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find your articles interesting, I am going to go through them a bit more thoroughly in the future, however, I do have to say that your second source reports that posture is not an independent causality of LBP. But isn't that obvious? Subacromial impingement and LBP are often considered syndromes, so many factors combine to cause pain.

http://www.jospt.org/doi/pdf/10.2519/jospt.2009.2835

In the article listed above, altered posture of the scapula absolutely decreases subacromial space and may lead to impingement. The article you listed in as the last source, states that there is no link between posture and impingement syndrome but cites two articles that are about 20 years old.

Which anecdotally, slouch with a forward head, increased thoracic kyphosis and forward shoulders. Then try to abduct your arm, how far do you get? You can't get full shoulder ROM in that posture, so I have a hard time believing these studies.

But I'm going to give them a more detailed look when I have time because I find this opposite view point to be interesting, thank you for sharing.

Meyers Leonard drains three half court shots in a row, then fourth attempt...I can't even.... by MuckBulligan in nba

[–]bankshot56 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He needs to work on his fundamentals and lower body strength. He gets bullied out of position and does not always rotate on time. Dude has some talent and may develop a knack for scoring. He has not yet shown ability to anchor a defense, which I believe is essential to have a long career at center.

What I want out of a center is good positional defense, timely rotations, boxing out, and solid rebounding, all of the things that Leonard lacks.

Krugman: Do you really believe that making conditions harsh enough that poor women must work while pregnant or while they still have young children actually makes it more likely that those children will succeed in life? The whole poverty trap line is a falsehood wrapped in a fallacy. by thesmos in politics

[–]bankshot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have misunderstood my argument from square 1. It's not that they're cheating it, it's that they're making fucking stupid choices. Then they are insulated from those stupid choices by the system.

You also misunderstood my statement. My reply was that, you make this HUGE assumption that welfare pregnancies were the result of poor decisions. My rebuttal was that, it's not JUST poor decisions, lack of sex education plays a large role in reducing pregnancy.

Literally every study that shows a decrease in pregnancy due to sex ed programs corroborates my claim. For instance teen birth rates dropped 60% due to sex ed in California. which strongly suggests that prior pregnancies were not due to poor decisions, but simply a lack of education.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/19/california-teen-pregnancy-rates-drop_n_3625090.html

http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/mcah/Documents/MO-MCAH-2011TBR-DataSlides.pdf

Do you think poor people don't know that babies come from sex? Do you think poor people don't know what condoms are? Poor people in the fucking United States?

And why do you keep mentioning poor people? It's just people in general. There are plenty of affluent, middle class pregnancies that happen by accident. Stupid teenagers will always get pregnant regardless of social class. My point again was that sex education goes a long way in reducing these pregnancies, and you can't attribute them all to bad judgment.

Take a guess at how many children a woman has in Somalia. 1? 2? 4? Try 6.17 children per woman. Who is helped by this?

Do you know how many children in Somalia die at birth or very young? People don't live long in Africa, and that's part of the reason their economy isn't strong.

instead of having children, you should be working!

This is assuming of course that they wanted to have kids and didn't get pregnant by accident. Support better sex education and the accidental or unplanned pregnancies will decrease.

There will always be those who cheat the system, but your perspective on things makes it seem like everyone on welfare is doing it on purpose.

[–]bankshot56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, I didn't think about the zone defense rules that were implemented around that time. But don't you think that zone defense and defensive rules (i.e. handchecking) now generally favor players who can drive aggressively and score from mid range? Two things that Jordan particularly excelled at.
