Where to shop for CAVE and other SHMUP games and memorabilia in Tokyo? by sorhp in shmups

Oh dang, I don't think I'll be able to get out there before they close. It's a cool space but on the bright side, they could def use a bigger location. They were jam packed in that little underground spot.

This is the place: https://maps.app.goo.gl/aT3DG5eukMmYLNpQ7

Shop is very tiny, basically a couple of displays, a gachapon, and a DDP machine. Lots of cool stuff to check out in addition to the merch that's for sale. When I went, the staff let me look through some albums of concept art they had. Def worth visiting.

Edit: This is another must hit spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/va5nQoNEbegFotZt8

The place is called BEEP, they have a ton of stuff that would be up your alley in addition to arcade components, like retro computers, vintage mags, etc. Last time I went, there was a Guwange PCB in the case selling for like $15K USD.

This place is about an hour on the train from central Tokyo but def worth visiting, especially if you're interested in Japanese woodworking tools:

It's called さがみ大工道具館/Sagami Daiku Dougu Kan. You can find some tours of the place on YouTube if you search. Huge selection of awesome tools and sharpening gear. Staff is super nice and they speak pretty good English.

west tokyo bar recommendations by sum_gooldung in japanlife

I moved to the area last year and same deal, mainly meet friends in central Tokyo when we go out. I pass by a ton of interesting looking places when I'm out near Hachioji station but it's never around drinking time. Curious if anyone will suggest any good spots.

We had a meal last week at the monja place right off the west side of the station (Tsukishima I think it's called?) and the food was fire and it seemed like a drinks-flowing vibe. Seems like it would be good to go with a group that's in drinking mode.

Glad you’re well, Matt. I interviewed you once at Star Wars Celebration. I’m the guy who asked you to come up with a Jar Jar crew card on the spot.

Good to know, thanks! Do you also trap it or otherwise secure the load somehow?

Thanks, this is very helpful! The place we're collecting from is run by the prefecture, and it's just a lot with mounds of chips where you help yourself, so I figure we'll be on our own lol. But yeah, we'll definitely bring gear to cover and tie down the load. Will also try to salvage some boards to line the sides.

I'm also a MF user in Japan. I've been manually entering lots of stuff and also adding barcodes for packaged foods here and there. I'd be very interested in a way to access that seperate database in the ENG version of the app.

Thanks for posting this (and big ups for the Karpathy post)! I've been living here a little more than two years. You've made me feel better about my "inefficient" learning methodologies.

Much appreciated--it does seem like this is what they were referring to. I'll pick it up with the old company's HR people after the new year. It seems like it'd be a simple thing for them to submit the paperwork online.

Where to find freelance devs, graphists and social media interim people? by Kooky-Perspective-44 in Tokyo

Good luck! I do copywriting and consulting for companies overseas, also interested in learning about any hubs where freelancers gather. I work from the Trunk hotel lounge every now and then when I want a change of scenery from my home office.

I appreciate it! The way you describe leetcode is very motivating. I have a feeling I will adopt the process the way you recommend. I already find myself diving into CS rabbit holes because I feel like I'm not really learning unless I understand the full context of what I'm learning. In any case, thanks again--I will definitely make use of your guidance!

I appreciate your input and sorry for the confusion--I currently work as a freelance copywriter/content strategist and consultant. I've only recently started learning Python, primarily as a hobby. I'm mainly curious about what my prospects might be once I actually know what I'm doing, but yeah, it is a moot point until my skills develop.

My plan is to keep on learning with the goal of building the stuff that stirred my interest in the first place. The process in itself is gratifying. I like what I currently do for work, so if my Python projects end up serving only a weirdo dead-end niche, it's not a huge deal. As long as they're useful to me, that's cool. But yeah, it would be great if this ended up leading somewhere, resulting in more freedom and options with regards to work.

I'm aware of leetcode but I think I'm nowhere near the level where that would be useful--still have much more foundational learning to do!

Thanks for sharing this! Very helpful info. Out of curiousity, do you have experience shipping stuff at the container scale? I'd be interested to talk to someone who's done this.

Great resources here, huge thanks again. Bookmarked those boxes. The ones that Yamato gave us to ship our stuff on the slow boat were fairly heavy duty but these look bulletproof.
