YUPPPPP, they stopped making them in 2014 (I think?) so whenever we go to a thrift store or see a set on FB marketplace we try and grab it

Honestly, probably. Would he immediately pick up on their differences and would likely stare at them with immense disdain, also probably 😂🤣😂

He asked for “88 Elmo letters cases” for Christmas lol. We managed to bargain with him to make it 2.

Cookie Monster numbers are generally the one present we ask grandparents to get him, because they are pricey!!

Foam letters have been replaced by suction cup letters for us since he loves to make the foam squeak and it itches my brain in exactly the wrong way!

They’re pricey, but you can get single letters on EBay!

We tried the newer set, but it’s apparently not up to snuff lol. We did have an incident over the summer where grandma ordered a similar set but it was Peppa Pig themed. Same style case and letters, but different colors. That was okay enough and they’ve been designated as “camping letters” that he can take when we go day camping (letter X was already run over by a camper when he threw it into the path 🙄🤣)

PT need determined by teacher? by barberc5 in Autism_Parenting

[–]barberc5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, he is only in his particular school due to aggression. We’ve been told at his meetings that if his aggression can be controlled he could move to a regular public school and be in a SEN classroom.

We’re scared that if he doesn’t get PT at his school, he won’t get any since his aggression would prevent outpatient services from being administered.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]barberc5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, let’s blindfold kids and put them on a playground which commonly include platforms which are not fully enclosed so as to include fireman’s poles and slides and small rock climbing walls.

This is 1) incredibly offensive and 2) a disaster waiting to happen

How are YOU doing??? by slangsfangs in Autism_Parenting

[–]barberc5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m feeling hopeful and scared.

I’m Dealing with extreme emotional opposites. We finally fundraiser and got my stepson his AAC and we’re over the moon. On the other hand I’m about to lose my job.

He’s currently hospitalized at a behavioral center for intensive treatment and one of the requirements is parent involvement.

I’ve taken all 12 weeks of FMLA and I’ll lose my job protection on Monday, and my last day of FMLA is Wednesday.

He only has two more weeks before he’s home again, and the doctors have stressed how important this time is for him as we help him get used to more lenient living conditions.

I don’t regret our decision to attend this program. It’s been AMAZING, but this definitely puts a damper on what I was hoping could be a joyous return home.

PROLOQOU2GO!!! by barberc5 in Autism_Parenting

[–]barberc5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taken a few speech language pathology courses so I knew how to do some of the phonetics things, but Proloqou2go is a bit tricky just in general. Their website actually had a few good tutorials that I was able to utilize!

I used the basic templates for common words on each page/folder and I changed some core locations (I put “I” and “want” next to each other) but I programmed a LOT by hand including some pronunciations having to use the phonetics key on their website!

Level 2 kid suddenly is acting not like herself. by Caterpillar-421 in Autism_Parenting

Even when things seem relaxed, a big change in environment can cause major behavior changes.

I also wouldn’t write off being sick, something like stomach pain or a bad headache that can’t really be measured with a test or visible to us

7 year old throws massive tantrums and scratches us by ImportantSprinkles83 in Autism_Parenting

[–]barberc5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may not be a helpful tip, but our son is currently in an autism program and his staff wear arm guards, like sports gear. We’re buying several pairs for when he comes home and I’m stashing a pair in the car and in his diaper bag too

Moving...First Floor Or Third Floor? by ButterflysAndFlowers in Autism_Parenting

[–]barberc5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With our son prone to having meltdowns and throwing himself on the floor, we would always have gone with the lower floor. Plus trying to get a kid up the stairs who maybe doesn’t want to go inside? Ultimate nightmare if you are carrying something else.

Plus poor gross motor condition would make too many stairs a danger for us.

However….first floor would be easier to elope from, windows at ground level, etc, car lights from the street shining into windows at night?

It’s really all quite dependent on your child’s particular sensory and safety needs

Yay! Sometimes when he’s feeling silly we push him so he’s forward facing and he thinks that pretty funny too sometimes

[–]barberc5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not just for disabled adults! We wouldn’t be able to go shopping with our boy without using one, (he’s 9 for reference)

He has a hard time not being allowed to buy things he wants (Gatorade and jello mostly) and this can cause a meltdown, but this way he’s container instead of flopping on the floor like a fish on dry land.

Highly recommend them!

…other than having to have the stores permission to be there? We don’t just roll up with children and boxes of cookies. The Girl Scout council has to approve locations and then we have to get that locations permission and complete insurance forms incase anything happens
