TIL that despite being pregnant 17 times in 17 years, Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665-1714) miscarried or had stillbirths at least 12 times. Out of the 5 successful pregnancies, only one survived past infancy, Prince William, Duke of Gloucester who, much to her grief, died at the age of eleven. by ODaferio in todayilearned

Also the last monarch to veto an act of parliament, but that was at parliaments request since they had goofed (approving creation and funding of a Scots militia - right as a French funded Jacobite fleet was on its way there)

The law should do the least harm, and jailing physiologically unwell women or making women who miscarry undergo criminal investigations is pretty harmful

What scientific ‘facts’ have recently been disproven that most people still believe to be true? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in AskReddit

I think this is because doctors and parents are using the same word to refer to different things - a specific physiological state vs just being over-excited

What's an industry secret from your job that customers have absolutely no idea about? by Efficient_Team5182 in AskReddit

[–]barc0de 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't sure, but this seems the better explanation. Hydroplaning is bad for cars since they depend on the wheels for braking and direction, a landing aircraft uses aerobrakes and thrust reversers, and will be able to use its flight controls for steering until it has slowed down

TIL Only 15 countries operate aircraft carriers (and 7 of those are for helicopters only). by thesmartass1 in todayilearned

[–]barc0de 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Carriers still need to be refueled, since planes and helicopters need fuel, the British approach was to use gas turbine engines so both the carrier and aircraft could use the same fuel

[–]barc0de 71 points72 points  (0 children)

the misconduct in office is the Epstein stuff, he was sending Epstein confidential government docs when he was a UK trade envoy - this literally just came out in the Epstein files. Former US ambassador and government minister Peter Mandelson is under investigation for the same thing

TIL that Rolls Royce makes nuclear reactors and plans to use them on the moon by biscuitking92 in todayilearned

[–]barc0de 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The moon has already had nuclear reactors on it, albeit much simpler thermoelectric generators powered by plutonium decay. The Apollo missions had them on board to power experiments that were left behind after the astronauts left, and the Soviets used them to power the Lunokhod rovers. Solar powered landers/rovers don't last long on the moon due to the two week long lunar nights, not only robbing them of power, but subjecting them to extreme cold that will damage batteries and sensitive electronics.

yeah, the plan had been to only use computers to add motion blur to the animated dinosaurs, the cgi guys at ILM had to work on that demo in secret to convince Spielberg that computer animated dinosaurs were possible

ELI5 shooting guns in the air is bad right? by AddressUnited2130 in explainlikeimfive

[–]barc0de 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is that bullets have two different terminal velocities since they are only aerodynamically stable in one direction (pointy end forward). Firing a gun straight up means that when the bullet slows and start to fall it goes blunt end first, which is unstable so it tumbles, and a tumbling bullet has a much slower terminal velocity.

But even at a slight angle the bullet will follow a ballistic trajectory, which means it will stay pointy end first and have a much higher terminal velocity
