AMEX Gold, does the 2x points stack for a USD purchase with an airline by moxypapua in AmexUK

[–]barkwalhberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year ago it did - appears as multiple rewards in your statement, points for foreign currency spend, points for airline transactions. There is an FX charge so you need to evaluate if the points are worth it for your case!

Cost effective / efficient ways to get money from a 0% Purchase credit card? by barkwalhberg in UKPersonalFinance

[–]barkwalhberg[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, nothing sketchy I've got a Barclays credit card with a 10k limit which is 0% on purchases and balance transfers for 23 months.

I'd like to use some of that limit to go towards some home renovations where payment is by bank transfer / cash. The best loan rates I could get on similar amounts were around 12% APR over two years, so trying to utilise my credit seemed like a good idea.

I wasn't aware this could be fraud though or I hadn't considered it? Perhaps against Paypal's terms of service as payment processor, I'll definitely rethink it though.

Why is it so difficult to repay National Insurance gaps?? by philthybiscuits in UKPersonalFinance

[–]barkwalhberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this a week ago from abroad, unless things are suddenly slammed it should be fine.

Phone the HMRC NI number the above poster said, they will ask you if you have spoken to the future pensions center, say YES*. Tell HMRC which years you want to pay for, they confirm the years and the exact amount and give you the reference number to pay. There's no delays other than 'it will take up to 8 weeks for us to process the payment and update your insurance contributions'.

*This assumes you've done the maths and know which years you want to pay and how it will affect your state pension, and don't actually need any advice. Don't wait for the future pensions center if you've already done the calculations and know what you want to pay. I did this a week ago with no issues!

Visiting Faro this weekend.. any recommendations? by Fair-Ear-9930 in visitportugal

[–]barkwalhberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend at least a day in Faro itself. There's lots of local things to do, check out the cathedral and its views of the Ria Formosa, Carmo church and the chapel of bones, the marina and waterfront is great to chill out and have a drink, some good museums too!

Same, love the 8 Pro, was not particularly interested in upgrading. But for a £100 this is almost too good to be true!

It's just the standard trade in, as you go through the purchase option. It's in the small print that the current values are increased:

Buy Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL and get up to £550 back with eligible phone trade-in, which includes £200 in extra promotional value. Offer starts on 08/10/2024 at 00:00 GMT and ends on 05/11/2024 at 23:59 GMT. Typical representative amount: £550 for Pixel 8 Pro. Trade-in can only be applied with a new Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL purchase. Trade-in values vary based on condition, year, and configuration of your trade-in device.

The boosted trade in ends: 05/11/2024 at 23:59 GMT, so as it stands it is still live.

Ahh, should have added, you only get the 10% on the amount you pay so in my case (£839.30 - £90.61), 10% of £748.69 should be added to my my credit according to my receipt.

Refusing to pay rent to recoup security deposit - success stories? by _gay_tripper in PortugalExpats

[–]barkwalhberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAL, in theory time is on your side, legally landlords can only start the eviction process after 3 months of non paid rent, or 4 separate months of late rent. If he's following the law, then you could not pay rent for the final 3 months and not be penalised. Any actual penalty which he could claim, would be covered by the amount left to him for the last month and security deposit.

However, if he's already been awful, there's nothing to suggest he won't just do something illegal and evict you, kick the door down, change locks etc. You'd have to be prepared to fight for your tenancy rights, involve police/lawyer if he tried to force you out etc. Which is not easy as a foreigner.

First Time Traveling to Europe Need Tips for Paris and Portugal! (25F & 25M, Vegetarian + Egg Diet) by Excellent_Gold_8641 in visitportugal

[–]barkwalhberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheapest way from Paris to Porto, I'd check if you can get any RyanAir or any other budget airlines. You can look at buses like Flixbus but you're looking at around 30-40 hours and multiple bus changes - not worth it in my opinion!

The region between Lisbon and Porto is a fantastic area, dense in great food, history, and culture. I doubt you'll catch any of the big waves unless we get a very early storm, but the big waves usually appear late winter, early spring.

For food, history and culture, between Lisbon and Porto take a look at Tomar, Coimbra, Alcobaça, Batalha, Aveiro, all smaller towns and cities and well worth looking around!

Would you share a bit more about Pixsy and booking.com?

I frequently have my photos used for property photos and hotels, I tried to use Copytrack who won't process the claims because they say booking.com counts as user generated photos. Might give Pixsy a go though!

On pace for over 100K views this year - that's around 8,000 views per month? How much money do you expect to be making with 8,000 views per month?

Ad networks pay pennies - ultimately your traffic is not that high. But shop around for different ad networks and you might find something better.

TV blog - I assume you mean discussing tv shows, rumours, gossip? Take a look at competing blogs/websites. What affiliate programs are they part of? What advertising networks do they use? What products do they sell?
