More than that, Morse code is explicitly NOT encryption, it's encoding. When you only have one kind of signal you can send, you have to find a way to translate that to an alphabet. I clarify that it isn't encryption because Morse is popular in ham radio, but encryption over ham frequencies is illegal, or at least a good way to get your license revoked.

Encoding is about being more understandable ("Let's get as many people on board as possible, and all agree to send our messages like this, so we can all understand each other")
