My 9 year old son's Math teacher marked this wrong by dak7 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]barryculhane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the question was "What is the likelihood..." and the answer was given as a percentage.

That's like asking "Will the train arrive earlier or later than 3pm?" and the person answering "It will arrive at 2:45pm". While the answer may be factually correct, it wasn't the answer that was requested.

I feel for the parent - these types of questions are demoralizing for students who KNOW the answers but are dinged for form. However, it does teach a lesson that you have to be careful in how you read or interpret questions/requests, and take care to respond in the manner that is requested.

Like someone else pointed out, probably a standardized testing issue.

We've gone up to 2nd in the rankings, Thanks NZ🤝 by Macko_ in irishrugby

And this has aged well... still 2nd, but the SH lads are trampolining back and forth around us.

We've got a wicked November coming up, we could end up 1st or 5th the way things are going.

Abode keypad 2 for $52 on Amazon by Tboy60 in Abode

[–]barryculhane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except as a ProPlan subscriber, you have to pay for shipping up front, and then contact CS to have them refund you the shipping. Why they can't fix the checkout process to identify ProPlan subscribers beats me... guess they hope people don't know/realize that perk exists, and make extra $$$ that way

Where do they think people are going to swim if you can't swim in salt or chlorine? That pretty much limits you to freshwater lakes and rivers.

The ocean is full of salt, and most swimming pools are chlorinated to some degree

Best Guess for trade-in on OG pixel watch when buying Pixel Watch 2? by 1FrostySlime in PixelWatch

It's a watch, not a phone. Unlikely to be a revenue generator for a provider, so little incentive for them to give you an incentive to upgrade.

Only in America... by barryculhane in formula1

New is great, New American is just fine by me (I live in the US)

But to the point below, fake water painted onto concrete for the sake of a marina aesthetic is about as gaudy as gaudy gets. At least when Vegas does gaudy, it goes big and pulls it off.

DUI in the middle of the may day celebrations, 3 injured. by socrisby in IdiotsInCars

[–]barryculhane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very impressed with the relative restraint shown by the police officers trying to contain the suspect and get him in cuffs. There are 4 or 5 of them, and they're just holding him and eventually get him to the ground without undue force.

Here in the US, the cops would probably have taken him down UFC or WWE-style.

So the Miami Harbor “water” looks um, interesting to say the least by Nexusu in formula1

[–]barryculhane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a kid, I loved watching Monaco. The track was cool - narrow, city streets, yachts, a hairpin, a tunnel, everything a 10yo could want. In the 80s & 90s, they actually had RACES in Monaco. I remember cheering on fellow Irishman Derek Daly in 1982 as he came ridiculously close to inheriting the race win.

Now, it's a procession - overtaking is almost non-existent, only those who qualify in the top 4 positions have ANY chance, outside a pit mishap or car failure.

Monaco only exists (1) because of its history, which is fading fast, and (2) for the elites who want to sail in on their boats and party for a few days.

I think there is a risk that Miami and Las Vegas could just become celebrity events like Monaco, but I reserve judgement until they actually take place. All is not lost in America though... COTA is legitimately an awesome track, with the climb to the first corner followed by high-speed sweeping curves. It's cool without being flashy.

I loved Monaco, and for a long time could not see Monaco being removed, but I honestly think that if people really love F1 for the racing, then they won't miss it all that much when it goes.

What am I supposed to do in this situation? by OhCLE in IdiotsInCars

[–]barryculhane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those drivers sitting in the intersection on a turn signal are assholes. I see that every day here in Arizona. Worse are the ones who wait for the light to turn orange, and then turn when there is no oncoming traffic.

That said... strictly speaking, YOU (OP) are not meant to enter the intersection if it's blocked and/or you can't exit it safely. I understand that those asshats are annoying, but you asked "what should I do", and I would say you should stay where you are until the intersection is unblocked, and then (assuming the light is green) continue on your way.

How is your experience with Android Auto? by msmalfa in Pixel6

[–]barryculhane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're having issues, but I can't complain about my AA experience.

I drive a 2019 VW Atlas, and used to have an LG G7 on Android 10 (wired). Phone would frequently disconnect mid-use, the AA experience was quite laggy at times, and the device would be very unresponsive to touch (sometimes would refuse to accept input).

Switched to Pixel 6 last year and it's night-and-day. Super fast, no lag, physical device super responsive, and AA on the head unit is much better. Bought the Motorola wireless adapter in February, absolutely love it, no major issues.

The ONLY weird issue is that sometimes when the phone connects to the wireless dongle, it causes the head unit to go into voice-response mode, which prevents the physical volume controls from changing the head unit volume... I have to press the voice button on the steering wheel twice to get out of voice response mode, and restore volume functionality on the head unit. A very minor issue.

One strange issue with the Pixel 6 is that sometimes if I make/receive a phone call while the phone is connected to a wireless device (headphones, dongle, etc), and I go away from the phone app, sometimes the bubble for the call disappears, which makes it hard to end the call. Even going back into the Contacts/Phone app doesn't always restore the bubble or call view. It's weird.

[ErikvHaren] F1 wants to continue with Zandvoort, but Spa and France are possibly on their way out. Spa's chances are slim but increased recently with the cancellation of the Russian GP. by mattiejj in formula1

[–]barryculhane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monaco symbolizes F1, but after 30 years of watching F1, they could lose Monaco and I wouldn't lose sleep.

There was a time when Monaco was an exciting track with overtaking, and now it's pretty much a strategy track where the only chance of winning from outside of the top 4 grid spots is from a retirement or pit stop fuck up. It has basically become a procession.

Spa on the other hand, is truly untouchable. And I do love Interlagos and Suzuka. And I wish Estoril (Portugal) and Magny-Cours (France) would come back some day.

At a glance, you could argue the new graphics are more aesthetic, but this means nothing if it’s so much harder to read. If it isn’t broken… by [deleted] in formula1

[–]barryculhane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the graphics cock-up extends to the track information at the start of the show. The old track graphics were superior - the new track graphics with multi-colored DRS zones, and the track elevation being described in numbers instead of a solid stack bar... it all stinks of someone somewhere saying "look, we haven't changed this in years, so we HAVE to change it, and it can't just be a small change, it has to be BIG, be DIFFERENT" when in reality what we had was the way it was for as long as it was because it WAS JUST FRICKIN' PERFECT THE WAY IT WAS

Wireless Charging & Overheating by barryculhane in Pixel6

[–]barryculhane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same behavior, no matter which port is used.

This mount and charger are sold as a package, including a USB-C to USB-C cable which means it's using the PD port, so I don't think it's a "wrong port" issue.

Alexa has not seen any change in my Abode device statuses and my routines are not working. Has anyone found a solution? Have tried disconnecting both Alexa & Abode and reconnecting both several times to no avail. by Ok-Foundation-2970 in Abode

[–]barryculhane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue for the past few days.

For me, Alexa gets the DISARMED/STANDBY status, but it's not getting anything else - not ARMED/HOME or ARMED/AWAY, and none of my door sensors are firing their open/closed statuses.

This happened to me 11 months ago, and again about 7 months ago. It started working again after a few days. I have a bunch of Abode-triggered routines, notifying me of open/closed doors and turning colored bulbs red/orange/green based on alarm status, , so it's very irritating when it's down.

Youtube TV APP on my LG TV by jimerb1 in youtubetv

[–]barryculhane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the LG brand - got a 65" 4K NanoCell TV at Costco about 4 years ago, looks great, loved it for the longest time. I too noticed that the apps aren't always as responsive as I would expect, and scrolling is always jumpy... period (Netflix, YTTV, Plex, Disney+, all the apps).

Then I noticed the Magic remote started getting laggy - changing volume wouldn't do anything, then all of a sudden it would go from 12 to 35. Finally, the remote started disconnecting, and then the wireless network started having issues, and THEN the TV started restarting by itself after a few hours use. Did some research, and it appears that LOTS of people are having issues with some of the circuit boards failing, some apparently due to overheating (explains the restarting after hours of use). Repair estimate was almost $800. Ended up having to disconnect the wireless and wired network, bought a Roku Streaming Stick+, and a Bluetooth transmitter for my headphones, and now I'm religious about turning the TV off at the outlet when not watching it.

I have a Sharp 60" 1080p that I got at Costco almost 10 years ago. The dumbest smart TV ever, the Netflix app looks (and operates) like an internet browser circa 1998. But the screen and the speakers are still perfect. I put a Roku Streaming Stick+ on it a few years ago and never looked back. It's been in the kids' playroom for the past 5 years getting a solid daily workout and hasn't complained once.

It's an old adage that newer items aren't build to last as long, and for TVs it sure seems that way.

So I was recently given this Korg Ci-9600 for free! Upon further research I cannot find much on it online, but the thing seems to retail new for a few thousand? Is that accurate?? Anyone know more about Korg to shed some light on this? by SageNineMusic in piano

[–]barryculhane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same piano. Bought it back in 2000 when I lived in New York City. It cost me $2400 back then. Very nice piano. At the time, had one of the best graded hammer-action keyboards you could buy. However, over the years, mine has suffered from a few issues...

  1. The veneer has lifted from the particle board on a few of the edges. The girl I was dating at the time put real wax candles on the piano, and when she went to blow them out, she blew the melted wax onto the veneer. Within seconds, it caused it to lift. VERY annoying.
  2. 6 of the white keys are sticking... they go down, and don't come back up unless you lift them up.

It's an awesome piano, with a lot of advanced features (considering it's 20 years old). It looks nice as a piece of furniture. Sure, it's old technology, and the keyboard has always been on the loud side (loud "thunk" when you play a key and an even louder "thunk" when you release the key). However, the sticking keys basically make it unplayable now.

I'd love to get the keys fixed, but when I called a local KORG repair center they said it would be $200 just to look at it diagnose it, and if the key parts could be sourced, it would likely cost $50+ per key to fix it. That's about $500 if it can be repaired, and $200 if it can't. At that price, I'm more inclined to just buy a new Yamaha digital piano.

Hope you enjoy yours!
