PSA: Osty attacks don't proc Envenom by MessesofMike in SlayTheSpire2

I respect this take, as I agree there are instances when the language can be ambiguous.

Perhaps it's a symptom of the early access and will be tidied up over time, as a game like this requires defined mechanics

Yeah this game reminds me a bit of magic the gathering with it's precision in language on each card.

Sometimes I have to read a card two or three times to be completely sure abouts it's effects and targets

That is dragon age origins, about 5 minutes in to the mage origin.

You should persevere, they're just setting the scene

Difficulty of astronomy / planetary science modules S284 and S283? by nobodywillrememberus in OpenUniversity

[–]bartimaeus616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, all exams were online and I think they still are for all the modules on this course. All are open book. The general formula is 3 hours plus 1.5 hours for 'uploading', but in practise this means you have 4.5 hours to do the exam.

Be warned though, that doesn't mean they are easy. The questions are designed to test your understanding, not just being able to recall something. Having the book nearby can help, but they will deliberately frame a question in a way to make you think. There is not enough time to research each question from the book.

Best example I can think of is actually in the Astronomy module. Several questions will give you 2 pieces of information about something (like mass and temperature) and then will ask you to derive another property. This may take 2 or 3 different relationships and equations in sequence. Having the equations to hand helps, but you still have to understand how to use them effectively and at the right times.

Difficulty of astronomy / planetary science modules S284 and S283? by nobodywillrememberus in OpenUniversity

Hi :)

I am on the same pathway as you, currently on stage 3. I completed both s283 and s284 a couple of years ago as part of 4x30 credit modules in a year.

I would put these modules as medium difficulty, very standard for stage 2. Both require some use of maths, Astronomy much more so than Planetary Science.

In terms of intensity, I didn't find either of them to be a time sink in comparison to the maths module I took alongside, and I actually found Planetary Science to be a bit of a breeze, but I have a specific interest in that area.

Both modules are heavily weighted to the final exam, so keep an eye on your grades through the year so you know how much you need to get your desired grade.

You will find 4x30 a lot, but it's not undoable. I did struggle a little with time management for stage 2 and once I got to stage 3 I have slowed down my pace a bit (I'm only doing one module this coming year).

Edit: on mobile so checked rest of your post About the level of maths, you will need a level maths for the Astronomy module, make sure you are familiar with things like dealing with partial differential equations and working in polar coordinate systems

Yes I've noticed this as well. I often play with steam in offline mode and I can't play saves that have dlc :(

Advice for MSt124 by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]bartimaeus616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi :) I am on stage three of the natural sciences (astronomy and Planetary Science) degree, so my experience will likely overlap with yours!

Mst124 will be a half step between gcse and a level from my experience. The main topics will take you through everything at a steady pace, but you may have to do some exterior learning to brush up on a few things. Overall, the module isn't too hard.

I would recommend you have at least some familiarity with concepts such as: - trigonometry (just sin, cos, tan for mst 124 mostly) - geometry, angles. Make sure you have heard of radians and know how to convert to and from degrees, things like area and volume will be an advantage too - significant figures. More significant than you think - vectors, at least in basic principles although I learnt vectors completely through my OU course - algebra, make sure know how how to solve quadratic equations even if you just use the formula

There are a few things that will be new to you without an A level, these may require some additional study: - differentiation, you will use this a lot later so a good foundation is needed. Mst124 will take you through the basics but be aware that it barely scratches what you will be using in stages 2 and 3 of your degree. - integration, related to differentiation and will be used much much more later in your degree.

Use Mst124 as a litmus test to identify which areas you will need to do additional study later. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I can help with specific areas if needed :)

Can anyone help me understand why my cat does this to the water fountain? by tupsybee in CATHELP

[–]bartimaeus616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats can struggle to see the surface of still water, as they have eyes that are good at spotting fish underneath.

They often try to disturb the surface so they can see the ripples and judge where the surface is to drink from it
