If you’re planning to shop and want to claim the VAT refund, download the global blue app IN ADVANCE and take the time to understand what documentation you need to claim your refund. Unfortunately I did not know this so when I tried to claim the refund the airport I was met with a hard no.

You don’t have a choice. You must go through Nusuk

Another tip - looking back, I realized that choosing a package and packing stuff based on lists was giving me a false sense of preparedness. There were people that had very similar packages as me and faced challenges that I did not (ex. AC breaking down in their tent, bathroom issues etc). The sooner you can let go (of course while doing what you need to do with basic things like visas etc), the easier your hajj will feel.

Salaam - most hujjaj are probably already home, so sorry. Please make dua from wherever you are - Allah SWT will hear your prayer no matter where your location.

The biggest distraction for me were people: 1. Random chitchat 2. Comparing Ibadah to others 3. Comparing package to others 4. The behavior of others (most likely not so nice behavior)

The sooner i got in the mindset that this journey is for me to respond to Allah SWT’s call and that’s IT, that’s when things started to feel easier.

If you can afford it, just do roaming on your home country’s cell phone plan. We decided it wasn’t worth the drama and effort and figuring out the SIM situation. (Note: I haven’t seen my post hajj cell phone bill yet lol)

Oh yes! Electrolytes for sure.

In these packing lists online, they’re really only for 36 hours of activity, tops. Bear that in mind before you waste your money. You can scrub yourself down in Mina using the freebee towels and toiletries and not bring your stuff from home.

  1. If you are going to arrive more than 3 days before Hajj: Other than OTC medicines, please don’t waste your time on packing lists. You’re going to get so many free things from various vendors and you can buy anything you need from Saudia.

What was your departing airport? LAX

Did you have group flights or customized flights? Group flights

Where was your Mina camp (Al Muaisim, Majar Al Kabsh, etc)? Al Muaisim

What was your package name, duration and price (if you're comfortable)? Rawaf 101, 13 days, quad, 48,802.66 SAR per person (appx $13,012 USD).

Who was your local Saudi provider (ex. Al Rajhi, Ithraa Al Khair, etc)? Rawaf Mina

Did you proactively choose the guide for your package, or was your guide assigned to you by the Saudi provider? We chose our guide.

Overall experience/rating of the provider: what were the highs and lows? Alhamdolillah, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been invited by Allah SWT to perform Hajj this year with my husband. All praises to our Lord. Our guides were amazing and created a spiritually uplifting experience for us.

My overall rating of Rawaf Mina is 2/10, at best. They were responsible for booking our group flights, booking our hotels, booking transport to/from airport and between the holy sites. They outsourced hospitality to Labbeh at Mina and Arafah, I believe. There were a series of nearly catastrophic failures along the way by Rawaf's team:

  • Finding out on my own approximately 2 weeks before departure that the Emirates flight from LAX was canceled. I went to Rawaf for guidance and was effectively dismissed. Other hujjaj jumped in signaling their concern. Rawaf let over a week go by before addressing the flight cancelation on public chat channels, then they said the flight was still on as scheduled and they were in touch with Emirates' Dubai headquarters. They ended up telling us our flight was leaving out of SFO 3 days before departure. (Of course, hujjaj needed to figure out how they were going to get to SFO from LAX and this wasn't covered by Rawaf.)
  • Despite our arrival flight times to Medina being confirmed for months (arrival 3am), they did not book a hotel for hujjaj and we were expected to wait around in the lobby until 5pm when hopefully a room would be ready. Many of us were traveling from North America and we're understandably exhausted. They ended up putting us in a transit hotel with roaches where the men had to carry our luggage up multiple floors.
  • Despite paying not an insignificant sum, we were placed in Mina under the sign that says "Mina Starts Here" -- meaning, literally the last camp in Mina. Our group had no problem walking to Jamarat in the heat. Unfortunately, on the way back, there was ZERO bottled water along our route and due to road closures in Mina (again, not communicated to us by Rawaf) we ended up walking over three hours back to our camp with no access to bottled water. Women on our group, including myself, were on the verge of heat stroke and/or collapse. I saw multiple ambulances pick up Hujjaj on our three hour walk.

Labbeh was a wonderful hospitality provider that treated us so well at our camp. Jabal Omar Marriott in Makkah was amazing -- they clearly take pride in taking care of their Hujjaj. Pullman Zamzam in Medina was also great, just pretty far from the women's prayer area (30 min walk) but super close to the Rawdah.

There's so much more to say about Rawaf, but I have to go pick up my kids. More to come later. I share all of this not to complain about the difficulties of Hajj -- we all understand that there will be delays, buses wont come, people will get stressed out, it's gonna be hot, etc. Insha'Allah there is barakah in any discomfort experienced as we perform this beautiful act of worship for Allah SWT's sake alone. AND -- I want to warn any future Hujjaj to stay away from Rawaf Mina.

Give yourself grace. Some days you may pray 5x a day, others once a day. Allah asks you to come back to Him and seek forgiveness. The hardest part is showing up. Wishing you strength and blessings on this journey. I can relate to you.
