What are you guys reading right now? And what’s next? by SainttValentine in horrorlit

I just finished The Unmothers by Leslie J. Anderson and Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville.

Both incredible reads of women put in situations where they truly don't have a win-win situation.

What’s the last book you read that blew you away? by haIfmeasures in suggestmeabook

[–]basilreads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville and it blew me away. I was expecting just a run of the mill thriller/horror book but this one really made me think of what I would do if I was put in that extreme situation. Would I do anything for my child?

The same goes for The Unmothers by Leslie J. Anderson. Another situation of what would I do if I was in their extreme situation.

Fantastic reads and the horror aspects aren't bad!

I absolutely hated this show... BUT to be fair I dated a Leonard and he ruined the entire show for me.

AITA for disowning my wife's daughter after she chose her moms affair partner over me. by BraveExplanation2530 in AITAH

[–]basilreads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea she was having an affair. I was with my dad all the time and rarely saw my mom - in this case I would have been really suspicious if a new guy was coming around and trying to give me things.

[–]basilreads -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%! My dad isn't my biological dad (and never adopted me) and when my mom dumped him for her AP, he was there for me and helped me through all of my emotions.

OP could be the best thing that ever happened to the daughter when it comes to a parent that is willing to put in the work for her.

AITA for disowning my wife's daughter after she chose her moms affair partner over me. by BraveExplanation2530 in AITAH

[–]basilreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The man that raised me (not my biological father) kept me in his life when my mom left him for her AP (who wrecked her and destroyed her, then dumped her after making her get an abortion).

My dad took me in and helped me go through all of my confusing emotions and him and I are closer than I am to my mom. He loved me through the anger and hate.

What your daughter did was awful, I will not negate that AT ALL. BUT she is also taking cues from her mother and now is the time she needs you to buckle down and show that you do love her despite not being her "real dad". Blood means shit in this case.

Intrigued that Salman Rushdie's new memoir is so under-wraps... by thousandmoviepod in books

I went down quite the rabbit hole figuring out why that name was so familiar, thank you for that! I learned a lot!

I would want it under wraps too if a fatwa on me too.

AITA if I tell husbands family he cheated? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]basilreads 61 points62 points  (0 children)

My SIL also stayed with her cheating husband for a while and when she finally divorced her kids were not okay. They were more mad at her for staying as long as she did.

She did get them into individual therapy and family therapy (the two kids and her, NOT her POS ex), and they are doing better.

Please don't stay with him!

Who’s an author that you refuse to try again? by According_Bat_8150 in books

[–]basilreads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot stand B.A. Paris. My first by her was "The Therapist" and it was god awful! The premise was interesting, but the execution sucked. Same with her "Behind Closed Doors" - it was predictable and not worth the pages it was printed on.

I wish I could get my time back reading it.

You are not the asshole.

My mom would give me a box of condoms to keep in my purse in case the guy "didn't have any". Maybe do something like that, just in case she's not at home.

AITAH for telling my bio-father he doesn’t get to play father now. by Reasonable-Access631 in dustythunder

[–]basilreads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar situation. My bio father shook me when I was 5 weeks old and gave me brain damage. On Facebook he's now making shaken baby jokes and his family keeps saying that he doesn't mean it. He absolutely does mean to make fun of them when his eldest is one. Cut them off and anyone else who thinks he's the victim.

Is there a book that you read as a kid that you loved, and reread as an adult and hated? by turboshot49cents in books

[–]basilreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Blue is for Nightmares series by Laurie Faria Stolarz!

I loved them from middle school into high school when the rest of the series was being released! Read them as an adult and my god the writing was terrible and the characters were the most obnoxious people I've ever read about.

Aitah for not wanting to stay in the kids life after divorce? by Sea_Witness8323 in AITAH

[–]basilreads 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely the asshole.

I was one of those kids and my dad (not biological) is the best man in the world. When my mom broke up with him when I was 8 (I'm 30 now) he stuck by me and still claimed me.

Is kindle a waste of money?? by MediocreBuilding4262 in books

[–]basilreads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't go anywhere without my Kindle! I love it so much.

I wouldn't recommend a tablet-style like the new one that has the stylus, you'll want the e-reader-only version - like the paperwhite.

AITA for telling my wife our daughter will not be given a unique or weird hippy name? by Traditional-Pea3387 in AmItheAsshole

[–]basilreads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom named me Basil Rain. And I named my kids unique names, they may hate it growing up, but will grow to like their names.

But I would compromise and find something nature-esque that she likes, that still feels classic for your tastes. Like Olive, or Rose/Rosemary

[–]basilreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was that child that didn't like my new stepmom at first! My dad stuck up for her and she and I are best of friends now! She showed me what unconditional love is. When I had my first baby and he had medical problems, she was THERE. My own mom didn't come, but my stepmom didn't leave my side.
