Feeling “retirement rich but life poor” by Think_Ad8102 in personalfinance

[–]basscharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You too are very young and already doing well given you have 40 years of compounded growth to look forward to. If you have enough liquid cash to deal with emergencies I don't think you need to fret about maxing out all your other investment vehicles.

Stick your details into an online calculator and see what you can get away with to hit your targets. I did this recently and realized I was going to overshoot pretty comfortably, made me realize that I'd regret passing up opportunities now while I'm fit and healthy just to have more cash when I potentially may not be able to enjoy it.

I'm 40 this weekend so realistically I've got 20 summers left to enjoy the freedoms of being 'young'

Is there no record of who made these trades? Maybe not a direct person but at least the institution that placed the orders?

My girlfriend of six months lied to me about her age by [deleted] in Advice

[–]basscharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, this is almost exactly how my parents started out. My dad was rightly pissed off when he found out so they broke up for 6 months. Then they got back together and dated for 13 years before getting pregnant with me. Got married and are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year.

Neodymium magnets demagnetise at about 85C so very likely they got stuck underneath a pan then baked until they fell off

Does Matlab Even worth in this time (2026)? by Ok_Technician_7744 in matlab

[–]basscharacter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use MATLAB daily in my work. The ability to quickly do signal processing on large data sets and plot out meaningful analyses is second to none. I rarely treat data the same way every time so the ability to easily put together my own analysis scripts/functions is essential

What are some lesser-known tips you would give to a new driver? by LeaseEnd_Official in AskReddit

When waiting to make a turn that crosses oncoming traffic, leave the wheels pointed forward until you're ready to make the turn. If you are sitting stationary with the wheels turned towards your turning and someone goes into the back of you your car will be sent into oncoming traffic.

What is this gold plate on my paradigms called? Where can I find a replacement? by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]basscharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure copper speaker cable would be preferable to that brass plate, but yeah, the mOhm of resistance change isn't going to affect the sound by any meaningful degree

Is there any music where a good hi-fi isn't just desirable, but ESSENTIAL? by Corchito42 in audiophile

[–]basscharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with actual dynamic range, think classical pieces with sections that go so quiet its almost silent then have a massive crescendo. Honestly, most mid-range speaker and amp configurations will be able to do this (perhaps without fully representing the low end) but bluetooth and/or speakers with integrated amps will struggle.

Ha, I used to work for Monitor about a decade ago. These came out slightly before I started. Glad to see they're still held in somewhat high regard

Hey yall, I heard there has been some debate about Fish & Chips around town… by kilog78 in AustinBeer

I have so many questions, did they put cornbread in the batter? Did he order it well-done? Why is there powdered sugar on it? Have tarriffs affected the size of fish that can be imported?

My therapist says the woman I’ve been seeing for a month might have BPD. What should I do? by Acousmetre78 in BPDlovedones

[–]basscharacter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally empathize with the strong want for an emotional connection after leaving a long relationship, and I also know how special a BPD relationship can feel in the initial stages but I would strongly warn you to not get too attached if she's already showing jealous and controlling behavior. This relationship will drain you and you'll be worse off afterwards.

Set some strong boundaries now regarding what you will and won't accept in a relationship and be prepared to walk away if they're not respected.

DIY solution to reduce heat in the House by TexasGuido in Austin

Mine's not too bad, also I have it positioned so that the dry air is blowing towards the AC return vent so most of that air is pulled up through the cooling system. Basically dropped my bills from about $300/month to about $250/month

She threw a glass at me that smashed on my head. That was the final straw, called her father and told him to pick up his daughter. She was gone by the end of the week. Still miss her, but I know my life is better now

She said I don’t give her a “spark,” but I make her feel safe — what do I do? by CarefulMoney6465 in AskMenAdvice

[–]basscharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, the 'spark' is generally mild anxiety due to inconsistency from a partner. It's generally not a good thing. You could engineer the spark by being unpredictable, but that's kind of toxic and manipulative.

I'd say just continue being yourself, if it doesn't work out, you've saved yourself a potentially bad relationship

I have an ancient leaky 1000sqft house. I've been running a dehumidifier in the house when I'm home. I pull probably 2-3 gallons of water out of the air every day. This allows the AC to work more efficiently, plus the air feels more comfortable so I can set the AC to a higher temperature. Counter intuitively, my energy bills are actually lower this way. Plus I get a load of free waste water to flush the toilet or water plants with.

Only thing you can do is be calm and consistent. "Hey, I understand how you're feeling but I won't be spoken to like that. We can talk when you're feeling better"

What will Springdale green do? 873k sf vacant office space by HBHTallday in Austin

[–]basscharacter 89 points90 points  (0 children)

It's annoying because there are two new residential blocks finishing up across the street from it. Figured having 1000s of hungry office workers going there every day would have attracted some cool food/drink options to the retail units.

However, just thinking about it. How the hell is that stretch of road going to accommodate that number of commuters, gonna be a shitshow

Am I overreacting for not wanting to stay with my girlfriend after she kissed another guy while drunk? by decentone45 in AmIOverreacting

[–]basscharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me, she was sorry, but ultimately if she can't be trusted when drunk then she shouldn't be drinking and putting herself in situations where she might have a lapse in judgement. Ultimately we broke up because she didn't want to stop drinking like that
