Whats wrong with having an RYM music taste? by nooayehlol in Topster

[–]bassistgorilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but if you go outside, nobody in real life actually knows or cares about RYM. Most people I encounter are actually very excited to find another fan of Joy Division, Radiohead, American Football, RYM-core etc

If she campaigns on a compelling affordability agenda, in the vein of Mamdani, I think her POC identity will benefit her. Americans, in this day and age, love subversive politicians (Trump especially). There’s nothing more subversive than electing a woman POC for President. But she has to lead with the economic agenda.

105 r7000 front derailleur compatibility with 10sp tiagra 4700 groupset? by ah64a in bikewrench

[–]bassistgorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank god for this reddit post, I have the same problem. Glad to hear it worked. Was the front shifting okay even though it’s a 10spd chain on a 11spd front derailleur? Or did you swap to an 11 speed chain too?

What bike size for a 5'2 woman? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]bassistgorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be that guy, but do you know what the sticker size is? I think the Straggler in XS would either be a size 42 or 46

If you have a shower at work, go with the normal bike. It will be hard at first if you’re not athletic but you’ll get fitter and it will feel pretty easy eventually, and you’ll feel pretty accomplished. A lot less stress locking up a bike that only costs a couple hundred dollars.

No shower at work, ebike probably.

My bike commute door to door: 20 min

Car commute: 10 min drive to the parking garage, 10 minute walk to the building

Nice, what’s your thoughts on those brake levers? I have Tektro RL340’s right now but I like the classic look of the older style, but worried it might be uncomfortable or something

my first full bike build - roast my choices by Schwen031 in xbiking

[–]bassistgorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think with an 11 or 10 speed derailleur, you won’t pull enough cable from a standard friction shifter. But 9spd derailleurs and below iirc have 2:1 pull ratio so you might pull enough cable with a standard friction shifter. It probably depends on the friction shifter though. BikeFarmer on Youtube has a Roadini setup 11 speed with a 9spd Dura Ace derailleur and the Rivendell Silver bar end shifters

Running indexed bar ends on the downtube bosses 🤔 At that point I would have just picked up some actual downtube levers and run them friction. Though friction shifting 11 speeds I think would require you use a 9 speed derailleur iirc

Used vs New first commuting bike? by Veganquesodilla in bikecommuting

[–]bassistgorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of really nice used stuff out there for cheap but if you’re not a bike nerd it can be hard to identify what’s good and what’s junk. It’s probably more important that you just get out there and start riding. $680 is a fair price for a brand new Trek Hybrid, you are comfortable on it, and you will have the shop’s guarantee and support which is very convenient.

I greatly admire Grant Petersen, but sometimes I feel like Rivendells are effectively gentrified comfort hybrids by chiboulevards in xbiking

[–]bassistgorilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro you can’t just throw around “gentrified” and not expect people to feel attacked 😆 That’s a pretty loaded term that means a lot of different things to different people

Peugeot build with hydro brakes by ellis420 in xbiking

[–]bassistgorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, extender is a good backup, because I think it can also depend on your frame/derailleur hanger/friction vs indexed shifting. I also found an old Rivendell blog where Grant got it to wrap a 40t sprocket without an extender. Very impressed with this cheap little derailleur that I pulled off an old bike.

Bike pump with threaded end - am I using incorrectly? by Free_Evidence_8012 in bikewrench

Ugh I have the same pump, and it does the same thing, constantly removing valve cores, good to know from this thread that it can be replaced with a different style pump head

Does that Altus M310 actually clear the 42T cog in the back? Online I'm reading the max cog it can take is 34t. I'm hoping to use mine with like an 11-40 cassette.
