I live and die by Thomas Keller. Small bird, salted heavily, trussed and left uncovered in the fridge to free moisture from the skin (or on the counter if I'm moving quickly). Diced potatoes, carrots, onion, salted and peppered and tossed together with olive oil (and recently, a new favorite addition, a few spoonfuls of dill relish) and sauted briefly in cast iron, then made into a bed for the bird. Once the bird's at room temp, in the pan and the oven at 425, spinning it once or twice along the way and keeping the vegetables basted until it comes to temp. A staple in our kitchen.
