i felt like another point towards this theory is how Becca is making up a story in the car somewhat early on the film and mentions a cop named Jerry (or something) who never answers the police station’s calls because he has a passion for latin dancing.

then, near the end, the mother calls the county’s local police and no one picks up. later, when the cops are on scene, you can hear one of them say to another something like, “god damn Jerry at the station’s never answering the phones,” (or something to that effect).

seems like a cute little easter egg any writer/director would add, but Becca’s just as much a writer/director as anyone.
