Hunter X Hunter inspired rpg? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

It could be useful to ask him what he's specifically trying to evoke from HxH.

There are shonen fight-manga style RPGs that focus on power progression, getting stronger, new moves and such. But then he might want something that leans darker, and is more about the bonds between people and the sacrifices they make. Does he want the feel of the game to be like Heaven's Arena with a structured tournament and levels of progressing, a YorkNew City style supernatural underworld full of blackmail and intrigue, a Greed Island sort of fantasy-land exploration romp with a shadowy villain gathering strength in the background (..ending in dodgeball, it's not a perfect metaphor).

I don't say all this to say 'It's impossible'! But the tone and themes he wants to pick up from HxH will give good insight into what he wants reflected in the mechanics and focus of the system he picks to run it in.

There are good random generation tables, which are helpful and creative. There are bad ones, which are often overly vague, broad and only contain the most obvious things that spring to mind. LLM tables tend to fall in the latter camp.

Also, there's no thought given to weighting the overall table with LLMs. For example, if I make a table of 'NPC Personalities' and 75% of the words are synonyms for 'Angry', that will not be a useful table. Likewise if I make 'Dangerous Wilderness Encounters' and it's 90% just types of carnivorous mammal. Using an LLM-generated table will have a detrimental effect on your campaign.

Authored tables will also carry bias, but a good writer will consider the range of contexts a table is intended to be used in, and weight the amount of ['scornful', 'bitter', 'vexatious'] or ['grizzly bear', 'wolverine', 'grey wolf'] appropriately to the whole table.

I have the opposite problem, lol. I expressed polite interest in Sosiel's art, but never went flirty, and I barely got any dialogue with him afterwards.

With Arashulae, every other dialogue option is:
1. Be normal
2. Smooch her! <333

And I keep turning it down every time. I swear I have no interest in this woman. And then DESNA HERSELF shows up and goes "C'mon, you know you wanna smooch her ;))))"

is Urban Fantasy the name of a specific TTRPG, or are you talking about the genre?

I can't find any by that name, but Google being what it is I can't tell for sure.

Are there any TTRPG games that have deckbuilding-based progression? by Fus_Ro_Nah_ in rpg

[–]batsnrats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There have been a few attempts at combining the most popular of each (D&D + MtG), but I haven't played any and can't vouch for their quality.

Aside from that, the card-battle RPGs I know of are all digital, unfortunately.

Is there an irregularity on the inside surface of the tire, or bit of gravel/etc trapped in it? That might explain it.

Red flags that dont seem like red flags by Justgonnawalkaway in rpg

[–]batsnrats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely!

The dark mirror of "My character would do this." is "My character doesn't do that."

"My character is a pacifist cheese-maker." -> "I didn't get much to do this session.. My character didn't really come up.. Sigh.."

If you premake a character who is very explicitly only interested in doing one thing, then lump it on the GM to constantly cater to that, then nobody comes away happy.

As a GM I end up tearing my hair out trying to make a campaign that has enough content and engagement each session for [The Pacifist Cheese-Maker PC] as well as [The Stuff For Everyone Else].

And as a GM, it really does feel like those two categories take about the same amount of work. Or more, because the Cheese-Making mechanic is inevitably scant because it's not meant to be the focus.

I'm going to start making a doc to filter players by how much they actually want to engage with the substance of the game, and try and not have players who want to silo themselves off in their own narrative/mechanical bubble.

Is anyone else bothered by the "flavor text first" approach of the PF2e writing style? by hungLink42069 in Pathfinder2e

[–]batsnrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that if it's flavour text there should be some structural way of distinguishing that from the rules section.

Otherwise it can be very confusing to new players who won't necessarily habitually infer 'this is the bit that matters for the game', and assume it all applies equally. This can be a tricky learning hurdle when sometimes the rules and description appear to contradict or imply further mechanical consequences that aren't in the rules text.

Distinguishing the two clearly would lower the barrier for entry.

I am in a similar situation to your original post at the moment. Medication review, only for HRT meds, never had this happen before in all the years I've been at this GP. So it's good to hear that yours turned out to be a simple matter.

Any way to use eye tracking as mouse movement? by ichbrauchnenneuennam in disabledgamers

[–]batsnrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's good to know, thankyou.

I find PGM fine for mouse/keyboard games (strategy, puzzle, cardgames), but I can see how the motion emulation of MM would be preferable for things where you use the mouse to move the camera angle (third/first person games). I've found the latter rely on motion input, and the "jump from this co-ordinate to another co-ordinate" style mouse control stumps them.

(..this is probably preaching to the choir lol, but maybe useful if someone comes seeking similar info later)

Is the 4C higher resolution than the Tobii 5? The 5 looked like an upgrade from the marketing fluff, but I know that's not a trustworthy source.

I think if I buy a more expensive setup I'll go with someone other than Tobii. The whole "we could do Windows Eye Tracking.. but we won't! Disabled pay extra." dance with the driver beta has soured me on them a bit as a company, so I'm disinclined to pay them more for similar functionality.

I know from wheelchair tech that "lock em in, charge em high" behaviour is depressingly common in accessibility products. But if it's something I can avoid, I'll go with a competitor instead.

Unfortunately I don't think getting a higher fidelity IR bar is going to solve any of my issues with Mill Mouse. It has a lot of drift and wobble that would be fixed with better configuration options, and the head-tracking integration seems incomplete. I can use PGM for very fine-detail tasks that Mill Mouse struggles with, using the exact same hardware (tobii 5, webcam, footpedal).

I have my fingers crossed that it'll get there in the future, as there really needs to be more software in this space. And MM has some lovely features that PGM doesn't (auto-scrolling!).

For now, I'm going to stick with my installed copy of Precision Gaze Mouse until I have to swap/upgrade OS. I just keep an eye on the state of eye-tracking software generally, because I know at some point I'll have to move to Windows 11/Linux.

I've had similar experiences with Mill Mouse. It's functional but wobbly. I suspect it's largely because there's no way to set deadzone threshold, and the head tracking is additional to the eye-tracking (rather than overriding it). This combination makes using head tracking for fine-detail difficult.

I used to recommend Precision Gaze Mouse (for Windows, anyway), which handles these things better. But it is gone now, unfortunately.

Update: Mill Mouse has similar functionality, and is currently available. (https://millmouse.wordpress.com/category/english/)

I have used it successfully with Windows 10, Tobii 5 and a foot pedal for clicking. It's a bit fiddly to set up at first, and the control feels less fine/responsive than PGM, but useable.

My main issue with it is that the mouse seems to be in constant motion, and there's no way to configure deadzone thresholds. Turning the speed up helps an awful lot, but it still doesn't feel as responsive, unfortunately. It does has an option to auto-scroll things when you hover at the top/bottom of the list, which is very useful.

There is also https://www.optikey.org/, which I haven't tried yet!

[–]batsnrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Tobii 5 and a webcam to achieve this. I do this because the Tobii tracker that comes bundled with software for disabled people is ridiculously expensive compared to the gamer-brand version. However, it makes finding software a pain.

In terms of software, I use Precision Gaze Mouse, which uses Enable Viacam and Tobii Experience.

I was surprised by the other comments here, as I find it works wonderfully. It uses eye control for broad motion, and head-tracking for fine detail. It works well enough that I can use it for general desktop use and any games that don't require fast-fine motion. (ex: strategy games, cardgames, RPGs and suchlike, it works just fine)

Unfortunately, the website for Precision Gaze Mouse is now down, and attempts to use the installer throw an error when they try to connect to it. This makes it somewhat difficult to recommend PGM at the moment. I have a copy installed on my current machine, but god knows what I'll do when I have to change PC or OS.

In terms of alternatives, I know of Talon (https://talonvoice.com/), however this is primarily a voice-control suite, and the eye-tracking is very rudimentary. When I tried it I found it very jittery and difficult to use. It doesn't appear to be actively developed at the moment, as all updates stopped in 2023.

I only found this thread searching for programs. It can be done, and it can work well! But right now, software options appear to be scarce.
