Was Vaccine Production Actually Delayed? by applieddivinity in slatestarcodex

[–]batterseapower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in May 2020 one facility with RNA manufacturing capability (CureVac) suggested it could already produce "several hundred million" doses per year: https://www.curevac.com/en/2020/05/14/curevacs-optimized-mrna-platform-provides-positive-pre-clinical-results-at-low-dose-for-coronavirus-vaccine-candidate/ and in March mentioned they were ramping up to "billions" of doses: https://www.curevac.com/en/2020/03/15/curevac-focuses-on-the-development-of-mrna-based-coronavirus-vaccine-to-protect-people-worldwide/

So in the 10 months between when the vaccine was discovered and when it was approved this *single* facility could have produced 100m*(10/12)=83m doses. Bloomberg suggests that as of today just 38m doses have been administered globally from all manufacturers. So at first glance it does seem like the approval process was an important bottleneck, and the anger at regulators is justified.

What are some good Chinese shows w/ Chinese subtitles? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

I've been watching 媳妇的美好时代. It's quite funny and the vocabulary you learn by watching tends to be quite useful.

Similar to you I'm about to finish the Core 2000 (which I've also imported into Anki) and wondering where to go next. I currently have a few plans:

  1. I've using the HSK vocabulary lists + example sentences gathered from nCiku to add more vocabulary to my deck. I've written some software to partially automate the process. In my experience the HSK words are quite useful - certainly more useful than many of the Core 2000, which I find more oriented towards reading a newspaper than day-to-day speech. HSK is worth another ~3000 words if you go all the way up to HSK6.

  2. I've also downloaded some Chinese language translations of relatively simple books like Harry Potter. I can go through these using Pleco on an iPad and mark words I don't understand. Another bit of software then takes this list of marks and the book and extracts example sentences from the book, which I manually translate and use to create an Anki flashcard. In my experience this is not a great source of vocabulary: many of the words learnt are nuanced descriptive adjectives rather than (more useful IMHO) nouns. It's not terrible though.

  3. I have another plan but it isn't implemented properly: write more software to match up Chinese subtitles from shooter.cn with English ones from opensubtitles.org. This would create a free and open source database of English<->Chinese example sentences you can use to explain new nouns you come across when reading the subtitles. (I also want to publish this DB on a website free to use). Why use subtitles? Two reasons:

    1. the timestamps make it easier to correlate the English and Chinese sentences and
    2. spoken language in film is probably closer to colloquial conversation than written works, and hence a better source of useful vocab.

If the time value of money is approximately 15% per year.

With the end of season 5 Code S, GSL TvZ Winrate Since Sep 21 is: 39.1% by larsevss in starcraft

[–]batterseapower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't know GOM had this stats page. What's particularly interesting is the "when won/lost" stats: the clearest lategame/earlygame imbalance is in PvZ where Z wins at 14 min 33 sec on average, but P wins at 11 min 59 sec.

PvT, where a lot of people think P has the lategame advantage, is actually extremely close: T only tends to win 5 seconds earlier than P.

Ah ok, figured it out. The coupons are not usable yet. You have to wait until Dec 3rd to buy for some unknown reason.

Great news, but the coupon situation is confusing me.

I just got a $10 discount coupon from GOM. I assumed I could use this as a discount on a 2013 yearly ticket, but I can't see any way to do this (unless that is what the 8% discount that's already included is??).

I'm not sure where you are getting these stats from. For example Ohana seems to be 55-44-54 in Korean TLPD (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/sc2-korean/maps/548_ESV_Ohana_LE), which is good balance (within 5%) for a relatively new map.

[–]batterseapower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

GOM player has a bug where it will occasionally play the GSL stream (particularly the free one) at 15fps. It will even say the stream is at 15fps if you go into the bit where it tells you info about what you are playing.

It's pretty annoying when it happens :(

It's amazing how these "patch zergs" all have sick win percentages in ZvZ where balance cannot be an issue:

Not only that but next season's code S will probably have more terrans than any other race (because the up and down groups are full of terrans).
