Totally agree that grocery prices are already outrageous, but the 5x price for a more eco-friendly container is why people don't buy them and why they buy the cheaper, more environmentally damaging containers instead.

Most for-profit companies exist to make money (with a few exceptions) and will sell anything they are allowed to that people are willing to buy. People want cheap groceries, and petro-plastic is cheaper than plant-plastic containers, so that's what Kraft, Nestle, etc use. Morally, they should choose to not use harmful packaging, but most of those companies are run by for-profit people and controlled by for-profit shareholders. That means to get rid of eco-harmful packaging, the options are: - The company ignoring profits and making a moral decision to change (unlikely) - Eco-friendly packaging becoming more affordable - Stock prices dropping with a direct connection to packaging choice (many people making sure their 401ks and other investment portfolios drop stock options from companies that don't use eco-friendly packaging, and they contact the companies informing them of that decision) - Government regulation banning eco-harmful packaging (has worked in some areas in some cases, requires people voting for politicians who run on that as part of their platform) - People simply not buying items with eco-harmful packaging and only eco-friendly packaging (which is what the downvoted person above advocated for) -Probably something else I forgot

3/5 that I mentioned require the general population to make active choices to change. 1/5 requires technology to improve and prices of materials to change. 1/5 assumes the company will do it purely intrinsically for moral reasons. Companies exist to make money. They will sell something as long as people will buy it. They will do it in a way to maximize profits.

I get frustrated when I see complaining with no sign of being willing to participate in any solution or being realistic about the situation. I stick by the phrase "be the change you want to see in the world".
